What proper grown up things have you never bought new?

Was thinking today that I have never bought a new fridge freezer or table and chairs . I'm 50 years old and not even a proper adult yet . I'm not particularly poor or overly environmentally friendly just have always made do with what was there when I moved in to rentals or bought second hand . There's probably other things too .

I've only had 2 cars and both were pre owned. Until about 5 years ago I didn't have a new dining set. I do have my Great Grandmothers beautiful glass cabinet, her bed sheets and two pillowcases. Until fairly recently I had some of my Nannas tea cups.

PracticingPerson · 25/02/2021 22:14

A bed. I have been given beds all my life, no idea why. Have never asked.

MiniTheMinx · 25/02/2021 22:21

My knickers are new......I buy them, just about everything else is second hand.
Cars always second hand
Furniture antique and some inherited
Sheets my grandmother's French linen
Crockery is mostly a non matching collection of old blue and white
Clothes mostly vintage and charity shops, a few bits that were my mother's
Curtains vintage
Rugs antique
I've bought a fridge, a cooker and a washing machine new. I was ridiculously excited with the fridge.
I've never bought life insurance.......I either don't feel old enough or I'm just too immature and irresponsible!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 25/02/2021 22:29

A house (ours is rented)

Cutlery: I was given loads when I moved into my own place and have never had to replace it

Ihatesandwiches · 25/02/2021 22:29

A hoover. Always hand downs from over zealous hoovering elderly family relatives

Embroideredstars · 25/02/2021 22:36

A sofa, a dresser, a car, piano. I dont feel grown up either!

CausingChaos2 · 25/02/2021 23:36

My sofas have always been second hand. I’m fickle about style and change them often.

WundaWumman · 25/02/2021 23:48

Bought my first TV about 4 years ago!

I am 51 and have never had a new washing machine or fridge.
I have bought new for tenants but always made do myself.

Rowofducks · 26/02/2021 06:48

Car
Sofa
Wardrobe
Dining table
Drawers
Bed frames (have bought new mattresses)
Tea towels

I often feel like I’ve failed as an adult as I’ve never bought any house let alone a new one.

sociallydistained · 26/02/2021 06:58

Oh, I think this outlook is a but sad! There's nothing "grown up" about going a shop/online and buying things new.

In fact in general I think it much more imaginative, exciting and planet friendly to be getting 2nd hand. Reusing where possible etc-

When I met DP he was firmly in the "I need a sofa, off I go to DFS, I need a bookshelf off I go to insert expensive furniture shop "
After hearing his past relationships and houses (he's had several fully furnished and left most them all behind) my mind literally spun at how many thousands upon thousands he must have spent, and all this stuff already exists and is being brought, sold, given away for free all over the country. I genuinely don't get it.

He is now absolutely on side with my way of buying - which is usually, I need a new XYZ, where can i pick one up from first - shpock, ebay, olio etc. Our house and style is now eclectic and interesting, rather than your standard out of the argos catalogue look.

Of course, I do think something should be brought new once the old is beyond repair- I usually source washing machines and hoovers new, mattresses too.

I'm honestly wracking my brains trying to think what was brought new in our house...
My under skin cupboard was a standard argos purchase, and I brought a new Tv 15 years ago - I still have that, our bikes were brought new and a few of DC Xmas gift Xmas just gone, for the first year ever.

Besides that, I cant think of much more.

I love second hand and think it's much more "grown up" to source things already out there, as your helping the planet, the environment, future generations- when I think of people who buy everything new (increasing demand for virgin materials etc) I actaully think of those who aren't educated in environmental matters and buy lots of things like fast fashion etc, prehaps 20s/30/40s - although that probably not totally true. Just what is in my minds eye.

Keep buying 2nd hand Op, it's a wonderful way to buy and absolutely no shame or not feeling grown up!

Crunchymum · 26/02/2021 07:31

House
Car
Wedding dress
Dishwasher
Dining room table (although we use our kitchen table to eat as a family but that was second hand)
Most garden furniture and accessories (barring a small/ cheap table and chairs and a few flower pots as we've always had terraces or very small gardens)
Suitcases (we always borrow them as MIL has an attic full of them)

miimblemomble · 26/02/2021 08:06

Loads of things. Where we live has a large expat population, many of whom buy new (company paid) when they arrive and then sell cheap after 1-2 years when they move on. We've got loads of excellent furniture and white goods this way. Washing machines, ovens, fridges, irons - I tend to buy second-hand but lightly used and good brands so there is a lot of life left in them and we just use them until they are literally falling apart.

Ditto cars - we bought a really good second hand car about 10 years ago. It's still going (touch wood) and we will continue to run it until it falls apart / older diesels are outlawed completely - whichever happens first! I would never buy a new car - as long as it's big enough to carry our camping gear and gets me from A to B, that's all I am looking for, and I'm not interested in shiny.

The only thing that's a PITA with buying second hand is no delivery - we have to collect.

We have bought new beds (or at least mattresses) - though we had some lovely solid wooden bunks that were second hand, and really expensive new.

barnanabas · 26/02/2021 09:39

Can't think of many things now, though quite a few of them have been in the last few years, i.e. early 40s (cooker, TV, sofa).
Never brought a new car. Never will. I felt very grown up a few years ago when I brought a second hand car on my own (used to always get my dad to help!). My FIL was gratifyingly amazed that I'd driven 100 miles to the garage, test-driven and negotiated it myself without DH's direct involvement.
We didn't have a wedding list, so never had the fancy crockery etc. I thought all of that was totally pointless when I got married in my late 20s. Over the past few years I've been upgrading some of our stuff and taking great pleasure in it.
