I've been watching this series and I'm finding it fascinating. People who seem to have embraced a completely alternative lifestyle. They were living in self built dwellings without mod cons such as electricity and running water! They all seemed very calm and content with their choices. Has anyone seen this series? Would this lifestyle or maybe a less primitive version appeal to you?

I love the idea of it, I loved the older woman who lived alone in the Welsh woodland. In reality though I'd probably hate it after a few days and be totally miserable all winter long.

OhioOhioOhio · 25/02/2021 20:44

Where do I find this programme please?

Zerrin13 · 25/02/2021 20:49

Its on Channel 5 on Tuesday evening's at 9pm

I love this programme and the last episode with Emma in her but in Wales was just brilliant.
I really admire her and the way she lives her life.

ofwarren · 25/02/2021 20:51

Hut, not but... Sorry

Midnightstar76 · 25/02/2021 20:52

@OhioOhioOhio channel 5 and now on catch up. I admire the lady in the welsh woodland but did think what must it be like in the ice, cold freezing winter. How on earth does she keep warm? Looking forward to next weeks, remember watching that family several years ago so looking forward to catching up with the eco warriors.

Zerrin13 · 25/02/2021 20:56

I'd love to do a version of this but I don't think I could be as hard-core as Emma or the Irish man who was on last week.
I couldn't live without coffee or Internet!

Emma has a woodburner in her hut! The thick walls mean plenty of insulation, so probably less cold than plenty of old houses, and less space to heat.

Tureen · 25/02/2021 21:18

I haven’t seen any of this series, but some channel is running old episodes, and for some reason, what strikes me on seeing random segments is that some people are obviously running from or in retreat from demons, which aren’t really touched on. I’ve seen bits of an episode about an Englishwoman who has a guesthouse in the Sahara, and another about a Glaswegian running a restaurant in Ethiopia, and an American who brought his family to live on some tiny islands in Panama, and they struck me as just as much in retreat from things in their pasts than as pioneers striking into into the wild.

Zerrin13 · 25/02/2021 21:26

This series seems to focus on sustainable living and living happily on very little money.

I love this series, although I could never live like that myself. The one that really stuck with me was the woman (Danish, maybe?) living in a remote part of northern Australia.

I also enjoy the many series showing people living in the far north of Alaska, but they're so staged and over-dramatic that I never quite believe any of it. Ben Fogle's series seems far more real and I like the way he gets stuck into their way of life.

Magicbabywaves · 25/02/2021 21:32

LOVE this show, I’m obsessed with people moving to the back of beyond and living off the land (no intention of doing it myself). You can watch most of them on 5 on demand or daily motion.
I find it fascinating but prefer people who aren’t too sanctimonious about it.

thisisyourwakeupcall · 25/02/2021 21:35

This is absolutely once of favourite series. I love Ben Fogle and the people he meets are absolutely fascinating.

The older lady( in her words) living on her own in the middle of no where- Egypt I think it was , was incredible.

Emma, the wonderful wild lady in wales- hit the nail on the head, if she is living the dream why is society running in the opposite direction.

I absolutely plan to live my own version someday, and that's how simple
It is- give up all the things you don't need, or bring you stress, even if that's just having no screens or car etc

OhioOhioOhio · 26/02/2021 17:50

Thank you.

KindergartenKop · 26/02/2021 20:45

The French guy who went to be a monk in Vietnam or somewhere was my favourite. There was a really emotional story behind it and Ben Fogle always interviews people with such sensitivity. I'm really interested in what brings people to make such massive changes and this is always addressed and discussed.

Junobug · 26/02/2021 20:57

I love this program. I would sellp up and move to live remotely in a heartbeat but my very pragmatic husband worries about really boring things like pensions and I don't think I could convince him. My favourite is Lucy who moved to New Zealand and unschools. I want their life for my family.

JimmyTheBrave · 26/02/2021 21:02

It's funny because I always want to live a more 'simple' life when I watch this show but this past year has showed me that I wouldn't cope without being near family and friends.

I think really I like the idea of a more rural life, but within travelling distance of my loved ones, and, well, I'll be keeping my car for ease, you know, to go and see them. And the odd theatre visit here and there of course etc etc..... Grin

See, I thought he was visibly damaged and in fact quite an unpleasant individual. I just googled him now, and he was disrobed from his monastic status bumpy his order in 2019 for having sexual relationships with women. I’m not surprised — not about the sex, but that he’s no longer a monk.
KindergartenKop · 26/02/2021 22:57

I worded that badly. He was the most interesting, it was clear he was very troubled.

Goatbriar · 26/02/2021 23:00

I agree, he was interesting. And the parts where his mother visited were very uncomfortable to watch, I thought.

SackofTurtles · 01/03/2021 23:03

Is anyone watching the Siberia one currently on My5? I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ben more uncomfortable. His male host and his father are so gruff and macho, and he seems more uncharmed by his surroundings and the mosquitoes and drop toilet than I’ve ever seen him.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 01/03/2021 23:14

It’s interesting because you can tell when Ben is uncomfortable with the situation or the people. He comes across as very inhibited and out of touch at times. He’s very London centric despite all his travels. I do wonder how he feels when he goes home to his normal life . Does he never question his own values I wonder.

I realise I know very little about him, other than what you see in the programmes, when the emphasis is supposedly — obviously — on his hosts. I just thought that the bit where I switched on, when Nikita was showing him to the boat he would sleep on, I’d never seen him look so ill at ease, even when he’s been in more obviously strange situations. I even wondered whether something had gone on off camera.

I just googled and he’s an Old Bryanstonian and apparently one of his first jobs was picture editor at Tatler, which is quite funny. Perhaps they should call it Hampstead Man in the Wild. Grin

There is something utterly MC about him. Even his legs!

BoyTree · 02/03/2021 00:00

This sounds really interesting, but when I saw your thread title I thought it said

Ben Fogle now lives in the wild

and I was hoping he'd moved into a tree house or something!

GoLightlyontheEarth · 02/03/2021 00:00

He was in a programme years ago where a group of people went to live on a Hebridean island . That was the start of his TV career. He didn’t do well at school as he’s dyslexic. Father is a vet and mother was an actress. He is quite friendly with the RF I think too. His life is very different to that of the people he visits. He makes much of admiring them but his life is very much that of the comfortably off London dwelling urbanite.
