This Government is so repugnant

I can see what they're doing.

Send the kids back to school. Everyone will say "How come I can't see my friend/family/drive to the coast etc as it's a much lower risk than my children catching it at school."

So they will all break the rules and the Government will say "Well, we told you not to."

Cue everyone blaming everyone else for the next wave (which WILL come).

Divide and conquer, that's their plan. They remain blameless and continue to bang on about how great they are until people actually believe it.

I'm so sick of them pandering to the whims of the newspapers and to their back-benchers. They've let thousands and thousands of people die by their laissez-faire attitude. And thousands more will die still.

I hate them with every bone in my body.

This ISNT the point. It isnt about how much risk it is about cumulative risk.

At the moment we have enough flex in the R number to start opening some things up and keep it under 1. The Government has decided that the priority should be schools opening (and whether it should be is an entirely different subject) but that for the next 5 weeks the ONLY wiggle room we have is schools. The cumulative risk that all pupils going back is such that it takes up for now and slack in the system. Anything more than that currently could push it back the wrong way.

Its currently like a game of buckaroo - schools going back means that it is just about to tip. Going to the coast in itself isnt high risk but it could be the bit that tips it over

TeacupDrama · 22/02/2021 18:36

The evidence seems to suggest at least 80% drop in admissions within 4 weeks of vaccines iwould say that was good evidence regarding effectiveness

RunningFromInsanity · 22/02/2021 18:38

@PersonaNonGarter

OP, you are being ridiculous. They are sending pupils back because young people have had too much to bear. They need to go back to school.

You just hate the government and are dressing up the facts to suit your drama/anxiety. Fine. But it isn’t insight.

Agreed.

If people break the rules and we have a second wave, they are the ones to blame.

Some of us have and will continue to obey the rules for as long as it takes.

Anna12345678910 · 22/02/2021 18:38

Yep he is a rubbish PM and we have a rubbish government that will no doubt be re-elected again ..... blame the voters not the government - the people get the government they deserve.....

I know this is amazing....

I'm so happy. Well done the scientists that worked on the vaccines. Well done the vaccinators...well done to all who contributed.

User133847 · 22/02/2021 18:39

What a load of cynical rubbish. Boris is trying his best and the government are getting us out of this with the success of the vaccines. How about give them some credit.

SplendidSuns1000 · 22/02/2021 18:40

Couldn't agree more, OP. So much naivety being shown today.

BarbaraofKent · 22/02/2021 18:43

Why do you think this? Do you just think Covid will never end then, because yes, there may be fluctuations in the coming months/years. However, we are going into Spring/Summer and we have an amazing amount of people vaccinated, we literally couldn't be in a better position going forward.

What defines a 'wave'? Rise in cases, rise in hospitalisations/deaths?

BarbaraofKent · 22/02/2021 18:44

Well, you have clearly been hunkering down completely as you don't appear to realise that we are just coming out of the second wave!

IsThePopeCatholic · 22/02/2021 18:45

I agree, op. Johnson really doesn’t care.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/02/2021 18:46

They could have announced a magic pill curing Covid, Cancer and the Common Cold and people would complain they prefer it in liquid form, it doesn't cure Measles, it isn't vegan...

You can never please everyone. I'm not saying they've done brilliantly this past year, but some people just like to moan about it.

itsgettingwierd · 22/02/2021 18:46

@Sirzy

So how do you suggest they do it then?

I am no fan of this government but this is a clear sensible route out and people need to take responsibility for their actions to help ensure dates don’t need to be pushed back

Totally agree.

I've read the document and for once there is a clear plan written up explaining before the press release and not announcing stuff and then deciding how it will happen 5 days later ConfusedHmm

itsgettingwierd · 22/02/2021 18:48

I personally think since he sacked twat twins Cummings and Cain things have been much better. Boris has dropped his persona and actually addresses us seriously.

I'm no huge fan but I do think he's proving to be a better PM than he was 6 months ago.

Sittinbythetree · 22/02/2021 19:13

What? They are sending kids back to school because that’s the priority. Then they are going to gradually allow other things to start happening. What do you think they should do instead? Never relax the rules? Abandon the rules? Allow weddings to have more guests but keep kids off school? Get real. Fair enough to think the government has been inept but to think they have any kind of interest deliberately sabotaging the relaxation of lockdown is tin hat stuff.

Sittinbythetree · 22/02/2021 19:15

Getting kids back to school is not ‘the whim of the newspapers’ it’s what needs to happen. Do you dislike children or something?

Kimye4eva · 22/02/2021 19:24

@Quartz2208 I really wound save yourself the bother. People have been trying to explain that on MN for months and people still aren’t getting it.

Samcro · 22/02/2021 19:28

I am just to pissed of about people in care homes only being allowed to see one person.
Boris is a heartless bastard.

YardleyX · 22/02/2021 19:35

This is mental.

You realise this government has just prioritised education above all else?

The one thing that puts no money into the economy.

And this from a Tory government!!!

Compare with Labour in Wales who have said they’re opening shops, hairdressers and holiday accommodation BEFORE Secondary Schools.

AndreaMartelsCoat · 22/02/2021 19:40

No words,I currently have no words for this type of insane buffoonery.

Actually by putting children back into school means more people will be able to work more productively thus putting money into the economy.

Also educating children to a level where they will be able to join a workforce at the appropriate time also adds to the economy.

Shame on Wales then for not valuing education.

YardleyX · 22/02/2021 19:46

Oh, absolutely yes. The benefits of Education are enormous.

But it’s not immediate money in the tills like shops & holidays.

I just found it staggering that a Tory government have got this right, whilst a Labour government have gone for money first.

LindaEllen · 22/02/2021 19:46

@SparkysMagicPiano

Cue everyone blaming everyone else for the next wave (which WILL come).

Can you tell us how you know this for a fact?

Because it's how viruses work. With any luck the next wave won't include such a high number of people suffering severe illness needing hospitalisation.
justgivejack · 22/02/2021 19:48

"Cue everyone blaming everyone else for the next wave (which WILL come)."

There have been over 13 million people vaccination and rising. It's not the same as last time

Some people just love being on furlough sitting at home Hmm

Yeah, you're a rare genius Hmm
megletsecond · 22/02/2021 19:50

Kids need to be back in school. It's just a pity that school staff and parents won't be vaccinated by then.
