What would you think of me?

Im 17st, unhealthy, unfit and I need to get my bum in gear.

I've decided to sort my diet and lack of exercise out, and plan to start running. I would prefer to do it at night when it's dark, however the only time I have is in the day time.

Im really anxious about people seeing me run and very embarrassed.

So, what if anything, would you think about a larger lady running? Am I going to make a fool of myself? Any handhold or words of encouragement would be fantastic.

Thanks

I dont think I'd notice.

If I did I'd just think good for you, I wish I had the motivation to do the same x

nowbringmethathorizon · 21/02/2021 20:26

I saw a larger lady the other day out running. She was hot sweaty red faced and I thought "bloody good on you, lady"
I was ashamed of myself for making excuses not to get out and run myself. I just hoped she didn't get any abuse from knob heads that might put her off.

CrazylazyJane · 21/02/2021 20:28

I would think 'good for her'.

As fellow fatty runner, I got to the point where I was able to bat away the negative thoughts about what people must think, as I was running.

I mutter to myself "sweat like a pig, feel like a Fox' and 'I'm lapping everyone sitting on their sofas'.

If I noticed, I would think 'well done!' Because whatever you're doing, and for however long, you're still ahead of everyone else still sitting at home on the couch. Good luck!

Blubell281 · 21/02/2021 20:33

I genuinely always think 'well done, good for you and I wish I had the confidence'. I'm nor over weight but I cant run for toffee, I'm always impressed to see people running especially those who are new to it.

HitsAndMrs · 21/02/2021 20:34

Nothing but respect. Well done!

fellrunner85 · 21/02/2021 20:35

I probably wouldn't really notice you tbh - I run 5 or 6 times a week so see runners of all shapes and sizes almost every day. And if I did clock you, I'd just nod and smile like I do to everyone else Smile

Remember, too, that when people see you out running, they have no idea if you look tired because you've just run 20 miles, or if you've only run for 20 seconds Grin I was so wiped out after a tough session last week that I could barely stumble home from the track. To an onlooker I probably looked like it was the first run I'd ever done in my life - and there's no shame in that!

overnightangel · 21/02/2021 20:37

No one will give a flying fuck , 99% of the time people will be too worried about their own day/thoughts/ problems to even notice you

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 21/02/2021 20:38

I always give people that look like they're just getting started a little cheer in my head, good for you OP. Good luck!

CeliaCanth · 21/02/2021 20:38

If I were out running as well, I’d just say good morning the way I would to all runners and those who are walking for fitness. Kindred spirits and that!

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 21/02/2021 20:38

I would think ‘good for you!’

TheVolturi · 21/02/2021 20:42

I started running last year, I did couch25k and I run ever other day now, usually 5k.
I honestly don't think people pay any attention to someone running past them, there are so many people running now!
Definitely take it slow, c25k is ideal. And in order to actually lose weight you will really need to follow a healthy diet, running doesn't actually burn that many calories. Good luck!

Cinderstella · 21/02/2021 20:43

I often see larger women on a run where I live and I have to say I am always full of admiration. Anyone who thinks otherwise? It’s their problem not yours. Good luck.

Cherrysoup · 21/02/2021 20:44

Whenever I see someone who might be overweight running, all I feel is sheer bloody admiration. Then I worry that they might be hurting their knees, but that’s me projecting!

Fairydustrust · 21/02/2021 20:47

I did c25k last year. it's really good. I looked and felt awful and so embarrassed at the state of me. I found earphones with music made me less self conscious, but didn't care any more after a while. Everybody either smiles and nods or doesn't notice you. Do go to Parkrun when they're back on. It's brilliant, so encouraging. And you can walk it!

spottygymbag · 21/02/2021 20:50

I would admire you and your dedication to actually get out and do it.
Make sure you include some strength work/Pilates type exercises to protect your knees and hips and activate your flutes when you first start. That way you are less likely to get de-railed by injury. (Saying this as someone who had to re-start running multiple times for many reasons).

iluvpickles · 21/02/2021 20:51

I'd think, good for you! I always admire people that are overweight and out there running or trying to get fit/lose weight.

It shouldn't matter what anyone thinks though do it for yourself.

ImFree2doasiwant · 21/02/2021 20:53

I'd think, good on you. Get a decent pair of running shoes, and slowly jog, then walk in intervals. I started out jogging to the next lamppost.

Sunny4876 · 21/02/2021 20:54

I've been doing myfitnesspal 2100 cals and walking 15000 steps a day and you lose steadily 1-2lb a week

JacketPotatoQueen · 21/02/2021 20:54

Another vote for couch to 5k here. I started running using that app, it will definitely get you running. And I am another person who would just think well done you!

toocold54 · 21/02/2021 21:07

I’d be really impressed and a bit embarrassed that I am not a runner myself.

As others have said maybe start with walking. Try doing the 10,000 steps a day and if you find it easy start doing the couch to 5K where you walk and run a bit and gradually build up as you don’t want to have an injury and have to stop.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 21/02/2021 21:07

If I saw you running then I'd not think anything, apart from rather you than me (I hate running. Don't worry about what anyone else will think (easier said than done), if you want to run then go and run.

CurlyMango · 21/02/2021 21:14

Go for it. I’d be impressed also

queenatom · 21/02/2021 21:21

I am a a similar weight and run 3 - 4 times a week (started out with Couch to 5k two years ago and kept it up). I’ve never had any grief from anyone whilst out running - most people don’t pay any attention, occasionally I’ll get a nod or a wave from other runners. There are all sorts out running round my way. Best of luck!

horridhorrid · 21/02/2021 21:21

Go for it OP, and I will be cheering you on from afar.Smile
