'Have a good weekend'- ???

SweetCharities · 20/02/2021 10:28

Is it just me or is anyone else a bit errrr.....when friends say this?

I am WFH part time. Partner is retired.
Weekends are the same as all the other 5 days of the week.
Nowhere to go other than walks, no one to see, so I can't get why people wish me a happy weekend.

I think it's just to be nice/sign-off a conversation like you might say "see you later" etc.

SweetCharities · 20/02/2021 10:33

Probably.

I think it's just a thing - a bit like people asking "how are you?". I guess what people mostly mean by it these days is have a rest from work.

mistermagpie · 20/02/2021 10:33

Unless you are incredibly unimaginative then it is perfectly possible to still have a nice weekend in lockdown.

Even if the only difference is that you are not working, that is still a bit nicer.

LApprentiSorcier · 20/02/2021 10:33

It's just a pleasantry, it doesn't mean anything other than that the speaker wants to be friendly.

BearSoFair · 20/02/2021 10:34

They're just being nice. And probably say it to everyone as a generic sign off, I know I sometimes catch myself saying the same thing to everyone!

MysweetAudrina · 20/02/2021 10:37

When I say it now it is always a bit tongue in cheek as even though I look forward to the break from work at the weekend and it is still possible to enjoy the weekend it's not like any of us are getting up to anything more exciting than the previous 50 weekends. Yoga, a walk, food shop, a nap, housework, cooking and eating are what my weekends consist of now. So while not exciting, still good in terms of alternatives.

TheUndoingProject · 20/02/2021 10:38

God you sound fun. Don’t have a nice weekend then Confused.

YouAreYourBestThing · 20/02/2021 10:38

Would you prefer them to say 'have a really shit weekend!!' ?? Honestly, it's just a pleasantry to end a conversation 🤦‍♀️

MiaMc · 20/02/2021 10:40

Weekends are the same as all the other 5 days of the week

No they’re not! I don’t have to bloody work at the weekend and that’s a good enough weekend for me. I’ll take it thanks.

LunaHeather · 20/02/2021 10:41

😂

Do you get angry about "have a good day" as well?

Or "good night"?

ImnotCarolineHirons · 20/02/2021 10:42

People trying to be nice and wishing you well, the absolute scummy bastards. How dare they. Hmm

Kittytheteapot · 20/02/2021 10:46

I get what you mean but agree with others, it is just a way of saying goodbye. What baffles me slightly when I return to work during the week is the question 'did you have a good weekend?' I suppose because back in the old days that was a cue to say a bit about what you did at the weekend, but now there is very little conversational mileage in saying 'yes thanks, I had a lie in and then watched a bit of tv.'

Fiona2020 · 20/02/2021 10:49

The weekend is surely a day of not having to work?! Which is good. We are going to a national trust place today and the beach tomorrow! Better than working I’d say!

No it’s not normal life but you have to make the best of it :)

mummybearhug · 20/02/2021 10:54
Confused
SleepingStandingUp · 20/02/2021 10:56

Yeah they should totally say bye, have a shit
weekend.

Do they realise you work weekends?

dudsville · 20/02/2021 10:58

When people mean well I think it's in everybody's best interest to let minor irritations slide.

AnyFucker · 20/02/2021 11:01

It’s like saying “Happy birthday” at the moment

They mean well but the reality is shit

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 20/02/2021 11:03

Well, it's better than people saying 'piss off and sit in your house for Saturday and Sunday'.

I think people are generally exhausted with platitudes and small talk - there isn't really anything left to say because no-one has anything to go and do. We are just sitting about waiting.

So I agree with you, OP but can't think of anything better to say instead, in afraid.

DavidsSchitt · 20/02/2021 11:05

Have a shit weekend

Whodofthunk · 20/02/2021 11:12

Well I am still having a nice weekend - it is still possible. Coffee in bed with a film, will do a short meditation after and have a long shower, walk the dogs after that and have the time to cook myself a nice dinner later. Options are very limited but you do not have to have a shit day because of that.

Pizzaandgarlicdip · 20/02/2021 11:14

I say this all the time.

I know life isn’t very exciting right now but I bloody love a weekend. I get to lie in until lunchtime if I fancy it, I don’t have to sit at my desk for 9 hours a day, DP and I can dress up in the evenings because we’re not exhausted after a long day at work and we can drink cocktails until the early hours and not worry about waking up early or having to work on a hangover. What’s not to like Confused

nowbringmethathorizon · 20/02/2021 11:30

At work we say "have a lovely weekend!"

And we all know we're being sarcastic so we just chuckle regretfully.....

unmarkedbythat · 20/02/2021 11:33

They like you and they hope you have a nice weekend. That's it.

peak2021 · 20/02/2021 11:56

Politeness, courtesy, good manners?
