If you could live anywhere...

Just day dreaming about life after lockdown, but if you could go and live somewhere, anywhere in the world for 1-2 years, where would you go?

Im 32, childless and single, not ready to settle down yet, reasonably good career that could get me a job in in most countries... I'm just wondering if I should go now, just sod it and go?

I live in a major uk city, but my other thoughts are maybe London? Or Edinburgh? I also like the thought of California, Texas, Canada, Singapore, Dubai... literally anywhere.

What would you do? Where would you go?

Switzerland.
Of course I'd be rich in this fantasy life as well.

Mixitupalot · 19/02/2021 23:30

Omg yes, go!! I wish I had of before I settled down.

I’d go to Australia, I just love the lifestyle there.

BillyButchersBitch · 19/02/2021 23:30

Sweden is my dream! It’s so clean and calm and the men are top drawer Grin

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 19/02/2021 23:31

Bell rock.

Seriously. In the days of Keepers, that would have been my dream job.

QuothTheSlothNevermore · 20/02/2021 01:00

My sister lived in Vancouver for a year and absolutely loved it. Probably wouldn't do Dubai (see thread in AIBU).

Maybe Greece? I worked there for about 4 months a long time ago, the people are so friendly and the scenery and history are stunning. Depends what you do though.

Munich.
Malaga.
Switzerland is stunning but it takes a long time to make friends with the Swiss.

Literaryseed · 20/02/2021 06:36

Canada - the one place I could live other than the UK. It's wonderful- incredible scenery, friendly people, great lifestyle. I regret that we didn't live there before settling down.

MaverickDanger · 20/02/2021 06:39

We lived in Singapore for years and loved it.

Cape Town or Perth for us next. Although enjoying our time in the UK at the moment.

snowstorm2012 · 20/02/2021 06:40

Sweden or Finland in the winter for all of the snow then would spend the summers in Antigua ☺️

MaryIsA · 20/02/2021 06:43

If I could be anywhere doing my job...

Probably Colorado. Love the outdoors, it gets proper weather. The food is good, you could hike and ski.

My brother lives in Vancouver, it’s great but it does rain a lot.

I secretly quite love California, the weather! But the driving would get on my wick.

I know someone who works from Thailand as a programmer, lives on a beach, someone else who lives in the alps and programs, he’s always hiking or skiing.

gigity · 20/02/2021 06:49

California - the weather
Miami - the fun
I'm a Londoner & don't think any of the main capitals compare but maybe some Canada cities.

FloconDeNeige · 20/02/2021 06:50

I live in Switzerland, originally from Birmingham. Been here 10 years now and we’re settled, bought a house etc. It is absolutely beautiful, virtually the whole place! We’re in the lake Geneva region and I personally think it’s the best part of the country.

We didn’t find it took a long time to make Swiss friends at all (but we do both speak the language - DH is French). There’s also loads if foreigners here so you make friends from everywhere!

gigity · 20/02/2021 06:54

switzerland is mega ££££ though isn't it

Mydogisagentleman · 20/02/2021 06:56

Jerez

Insert1x20p · 20/02/2021 06:57

Boulder, Colorado.

KobaniDaughters · 20/02/2021 06:59

For 1-2 years I’d love to try Paris or Madrid, both cities just call to me whenever I visit

Am almost a decade into a 3yr adventure abroad...don’t assume it will be short term!!

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/02/2021 07:01

The West end of Glasgow.

MinnieMountain · 20/02/2021 07:08

tbf Flocon I was going on anecdotal evidence about Swiss villages.

DH is subtly working on DS to move there when he’s a teenager for the skiing.

FloconDeNeige · 20/02/2021 07:16

Switzerland is very expensive, yes. But salaries are high, so it’s all relative.

It’s a skiers paradise. We live in a small resort and my boys (2&4) have lessons every weekend. In fact I need to get myself up now to take them this morning!

CatCup · 20/02/2021 07:20

New York

FindingMeno · 20/02/2021 07:21

I would go to Sweden.
Although I can think of more fanciful options, Sweden is beautiful and not such a culture shock.
English is widely spoken and it seems to be such a grown up country with attractive ideals.
And you get to swim in lakes.

FloconDeNeige · 20/02/2021 07:28

If not Switzerland, I’d say Costa Rica 🇨🇷

katscamel · 20/02/2021 07:35

Like you I have a job that allows me to work virtually anywhere. I think if the visa issue wasn't a pain I'd go to New Zealand, Australia or back to Oman. For the money...I'd head to Saudi... having lived all of the Middle East, Saudi is the only country I haven't been to (and yes I am aware of the pretty appalling human rights issues).

LongIslandIcedT · 20/02/2021 07:43

Hawaii.
If it had to be the UK, Lake District.
