Morning sickness - when will it get better?!

I’m 9 weeks pregnant and feel so awful. Feel sick day and night and throwing up too. Absolutely shattered. Trying to look after older child and work from home. Just feel miserable! Don’t remember it being this bad last time round, but I am older now (39) so maybe it’s that. When does this end?! Hope this is the peak of it

3 months ish. Guessing you’ve tried the flat coke/ ginger biscuits thing
Poor you. This bit sucks. You might need to speak to the GP about meds

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/02/2021 16:25

Sorry to be a downer but I had it the whole 9 months. It lifted magically once I gave birth.

CrispMonster12 · 18/02/2021 16:26

@Heatherjayne1972 thanks- I’ve not tried flat coke- will give that a go!

I remember 9wks was being the worst time with both of mine (I read that’s quite normal - a hormone peak). Did start to get better after that. With my first, a boy, felt sick until about 3 months - I was 32.
With my second, a girl, felt sick until about 6 months - I was 37.

Theotherrudolph · 18/02/2021 17:09

6-18ish weeks with all mine, I was just on the cusp of the point where they’d have medically treated it but was never quite bad enough. I actually found very fizzy full sugar coke or sprite helped and sucky sweets. Also getting as much rest as possible.

ShulamithFirestone · 18/02/2021 17:09

Mine lasted until around 15 weeks

Same.
SadderThanEeyore · 18/02/2021 18:30

Keep lucozade (original) by your bed. Take sips if you wake at night, and try and drink some before you get up. Sickness is worse when your blood sugars are low, if you can keep a top up of glucose going in it should help.

IdblowJonSnow · 18/02/2021 18:41

About 14 weeks I think. There are meds which are safe so dont suffer unnecessarily.

thesnailandthewhale · 18/02/2021 18:54

Mine carried on all the way through, I was still sick the day after he was born. I found chocolate buttons were one of the only things I could keep down as I didn't 'eat' them, they just melted on my tongue. TMI but I also went through packs of refreshers so at least it didn't taste so acidic on the back up Blush

Trumplosttheelection · 18/02/2021 18:56

The doctor told me in my third very sick pregnancy that it's about 15/16 weeks as the placenta really gets going. In retrospect I should have asked to be signed off. They wouldn't give me any meds despite ending every pregnancy significantly lighter than I started due to inability to eat. That was a few years ago now and I have the impression meds are more often used now.

Bobbiepin · 18/02/2021 18:57

About 5 months, with the odd bout here and there and during labour. I found that if I let myself get hungry I would vomit whatever I ate so would have little nibbles of cereal bars and toast between meals which helped. To be brutally honest, I got to the point where I chose food based on what would be least unpleasant to throw up.

In the end, cyclizine and motion sickness wristbands helped best.

DramaAlpaca · 18/02/2021 18:58

It didn't stop until between 18 & 20 weeks with all three of mine. I sympathise, it's horrible.

PolloDePrimavera · 18/02/2021 19:02

Sorry but I was the whole time with my second child... But, I really wish I had acidic the doctor for help. Marmite bagels and fizzy water got me through. It WILL end but I know 31 weeks will seem like an eternity. Add I don't know if it's true but it is meant to be a good sign.

CrispMonster12 · 18/02/2021 19:39

Thanks so much for your messages everyone, it’s just grim isn’t it!

I’m another one who had it all the way through until the children were born and then it just stopped. I was on cyclizine the second time for six weeks but it did nothing for me.

CrispMonster12 · 18/02/2021 20:12

I have already decided I’m never doing this ever again. Horrendous that this lasts all the way through for some people. Absolute warriors!

It can be much worse with second and subsequent children bc you're much more tired.

What you can do however is ensure you're getting all the nutrients you need. I took Elevit and that worked like magic.

Can't remember offhand but I seem to recall that it's vitamins B6 and B12 you need most.

All the best.

EnglishRain · 18/02/2021 20:23

Mine lasted until about 24 weeks. By 28 weeks the heartburn was bad enough that I was sicking up in my mouth and carting a massive bottle of gaviscon around with me!

EnglishRain · 18/02/2021 20:24

@CrispMonster12 I said this!! DD is seven months and I'm already trying to convince DH to agree to have another at some point 😱

Greenbks · 18/02/2021 20:26

Hi, sorry you’re going through this. I’m also 9 weeks and have been taking cyclizine three times a day and that has mostly helped/taken the edge off. I can still be nauseous or throw up once/twice a day on it but much better than the alternative which is not being able to keep anything down and becoming dehydrated which happened in first pregnancy (lost baby).

I did try to down the meds to two a day but the sickness came back with a vengeance so decided not to be a martyr.

It really is grim and I’m hoping it will mostly go around 13/14 weeks (as it did with my son who I lost at 18 weeks) and just pop occasionally instead of the whole day debilitating nausea/sickness.

I’ve been keeping to a strict diet of cereal (sometimes all three meals) nuts as snacks and the odd cold pizza as smells are a trigger. I also took 6 weeks off (used all my annual leave) and have found not being stressed /having to get up everyday etc has massively helped, although things like showers can still be too much motion.

Try coconut water if you can’t stomach proper water - I’ve been drinking 3/4 of those authentic coconuts waters from M&S and that seems to help. Bottled water as tap water tastes horrible and a few prunes to help keep me regular!

Sorry there’s not much in terms of fixes for the nausea/ sickness just eat what you can and regularly- I find eating regularly helps keep nausea at bay.

I think I said that about 9 weeks with each child. I have 3. Grin
Norwaydidnthappen · 18/02/2021 23:08

Most people report it ending towards the end of the first trimester so 12/13 weeks. Mine ended at 16 weeks with one pregnancy, 18 weeks with another and sadly about 24 weeks with another.

It’s truly shit so I do sympathise, I had to suck on Trebor mints all day to get through.

HappydaysArehere · 18/02/2021 23:14

I had this for six months all day and night. At six months it turned.to ordinary morning sickness. I couldn’t eat a meal and lived on snacks until I gave birth. The upside was that I didn’t put any weight on and had a flat stomach when I came out of hospital

Maybemay123 · 18/02/2021 23:27

Both my pregnancies lasted till the moment I gave birth. I was 24 & 29 when I was pregnant so don't think it's age. However most women find it eases around 12 weeks. I just used to tell myself well at least it's a sign of a positive pregnancy!
