Morning sickness - when will it get better?!

I’m 9 weeks pregnant and feel so awful. Feel sick day and night and throwing up too. Absolutely shattered. Trying to look after older child and work from home. Just feel miserable! Don’t remember it being this bad last time round, but I am older now (39) so maybe it’s that. When does this end?! Hope this is the peak of it

I was nauseous all day every day until about 18-19 weeks and vomiting about once a day, then it reduced to feeling sick if I was tired, hungry or thirsty. I’m 29 weeks now and am much better, there’s the odd thing that makes me feel ill, at the moment it’s apples which is strange because I’ve had an apple a day throughout pregnancy as have loved the refreshing crunch so far this pregnancy. I’m still bad if I’m hungry too.
I recommend fizzy drinks, it’s pretty much all I drink at the moment. I allow myself one Pepsi etc a day because of the caffeine but live off lemonade etc. Lemon Fanta is amazing, I could drink litres of the stuff! And I’ve just got back into a cup of tea in the morning which I had missed but made me feel awful.
I was the same when I was pregnant with my DD and swore I wouldn’t have another but here we are!

BogRollBOGOF · 18/02/2021 23:32

First time it wore off at around 16-18 weeks. I wasn't actually sick much but the nausea was draining. And the gag reaction. Some days I couldn't get a toothbrush or mouthwas into my mouth. I lost about 2/3s of a stone despite gaining bump by 5 months. I then gained 50% of my bodyweight by the end of the pregnancy. For added joy, the SPD crept in before the sickness went, plus ended up with carpal tunnel syndrome so I had useless painful legs and useless, painfully tingling hands.

Second time it wore off by about 12 weeks and I had this weird thing called a second trimester where I felt fairly normal and human for a few weeks before the return of the SPD.

How sick are you being op? I was horrifically sick, kept asking others when it would stop. They’d reply - yes it’s shit, I was sick 3 months/20 weeks/30 weeks/try ginger biscuits etc etc! Actually I was dangerously sick, admitted to hospital for over week while they tried re-hydrate me/save me/syringe feed me nutri-sips. It wasn’t normal.

There’s an actual medical difference between NVP (Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) which is miserable, can still last throughout but not live threatening and HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarium please speak to a professional and ask for bloods/urine samples to be taken.

Not being hold any food or water at all for days is not normal for any person, let along a pregnant person. Take care, I’m sure you’ll be fine, but get checked as a precaution if you think it’s just not normal Flowers

grassisjeweled · 19/02/2021 02:12

Around 12 weeks. In the meantime, eat carbs

Blackbutterfly5 · 19/02/2021 02:42

Mine eased off almost completely by 16 weeks. It is awful, I think it got worse at about 11-12 weeks.

PrimeraVez · 19/02/2021 05:03

I’m currently 12 weeks with my third and I think/pray it’s starting to ease.

With DS1 I felt pretty good from about 12 weeks onwards and with DS2, it took until about 20 weeks.

DarkAtNight · 19/02/2021 08:05

Gosh, mine lasted until my daughter was born 5 weeks early due to IUGR and i had lost loads of weight through it.

I couldn't even keep sips of water down.

I was too ill to pursue it with my GP, I just didnt have the energy or the ability to hold a conversation without throwing up. They did talk about hospitalization at one point but wouldn't admit me because I already had a child at home who needed looking after (and a husband who was more than capable and told them so 🙄)

Anyway, hopefully yours won't be that bad and you'll start feeling better soon!

Most women i know had it for around 12-16 weeks. My sister in law didn't even feel sick!

Letsskidaddle · 19/02/2021 08:40

Oh it's just the worst isn't it? Huge congratulations though, they're worth it!

Mine was all the way through - I got a lot of relief from wearing sea-sickness bands (from chemist and bigger supermarkets or online). They put pressure on an acupressure point on your wrists and really helped.

CrispMonster12 · 19/02/2021 13:30

@SongSilkTrainspot your experience sounds awful, so sorry you went through that. I am no way as severe as that, I am just feeling sorry for myself really. If it gets any worse I will ring GP and see if they can give me something. Water makes me heave but managed to keep some lucozade down for a bit. Will try some travel wrist bands as a few people have said these seem to find help xx

My morning sickness was between 9 and 16 weeks with both pregnancies. I hope it soon eases for you OP.

ohidoliketobe · 19/02/2021 18:35

Throughout for all my pregnancies unfortunately (currently 30 weeks with #3). First trimester is definetly the worse though Flowers
There's a sickness support thread on the pregnancy board, please head over and join it, they're so helpful on there

It was 20-21 weeks with both of mine. Really awful. I found the travel sickness acupressure bracelets really worked - a faff to get them positioned right, but once they were, they brought the nausea down to very mild background levels.

ChampionOfTheSun · 19/02/2021 19:39

16 weeks here, had a lovely break, thought I was done with it and then it started back up at 24 weeks. Mine was always worst at night so I tried to sleep through it when I could!

SongSilkTrainspot · 19/02/2021 20:28

Thanks @CrispMonster12, definitely don't suffer. The meds can be so helpful. And just allow you to function more normally. Take care x

CrispMonster12 · 19/02/2021 20:35

Thank you so much for the link to the thread @ohidoliketobe - it’s been great to have a read. I am going to ring doc on Monday, to see if I take something for this constant nausea. Just not functioning at all!
Wishing you all the best, and all the ladies on here.

@CrispMonster12 Ice Poles/lollies and Ritz Crackers were my saviour. The constant sucking on the ice lolly took away my nausea...it came back soon after I’d finished but my god that half hour or so was great 😅😅 I’m sure it’s the last thing you want in freezing cold February but send someone to get you ice lollies and give it a try. Just a plain old flavoured one...nothing with ice cream etc 😊

CrispMonster12 · 19/02/2021 21:05

Thank you @Squish3 ! The lollies sound good and the ritz crackers- I actually think I could manage a ritz cracker!

I feel for you OP. Its absolutely horrific. I was 38 when I had my son and it only slightly eased when I was prescribed anti sickness medication at 5 months. It stopped the vomiting but the nausea was relentless. When my son was 5 months old I was pregnant again!

Squish3 · 19/02/2021 22:53

@CrispMonster12 No problem! Fingers crossed you find something that works 🤞🏼 And I really hope it passes for you soon!! It’s definitely not the most enjoyable part or pregnancy 😓

Blyatiful · 19/02/2021 22:56

I honked all the way through both pregnancies and labour. And after I’d given birth. Once the baby was out I had an injection to stop me being sick.
