Partly its all the low sodium chicken broth, half and half, sticks of butter - but very often its the actual recipes. Just a bit off?

Tater tots poutine is one of the finest inventions I've been introduced to in the last few years

Cultural appropriation Wink

My introduction to scones was in Scotland long before they made an appearance in the US. And I do prefer them to the sweeter versions that we have in the US. I also confuse the baristas in Starbucks (well I used to one upon a time before the pandemic) by pronouncing scone to rhyme with gone as I was taught in Scotland.

I am curious what that cut of meat is used for instead in the US. Is it pork chops maybe? @noodlezoodle I think so. American bacon comes from pork belly; back bacon is a bit of the belly and more of the loin (I think). Pork chops come from the loin.

@Wbeezer

Traitor! What about proper dry cured smoked streaky bacon cooked till its crispy though( i recomend Puddledub bacon) i prefer that to wobbly back bacon. I find american bacon a bit bland but I do like the crispy texture.
That would be perfect :-)

I much prefer streaky cooked till crispy bacon over wobbly back bacon (love the description).

Less fluffy? Thinner. Less "grand"! Grin School grub.

longwayoff · 19/02/2021 20:15

I really like the flavoured ground coffees my daughter brought me from NY, vanilla was lovely and I have a pecan one stashed away. Havent found anything comparable here. Whittard's efforts were feeble and flavoured syrups are vile.

Cannot recommend Puddledub Bacon highly enough, its so much better than supermarket stuff. I'm particularly partial to their middle bacon, its got a bit of back bacon with a bit of streaky attached. Its gorgeous!!

I've had peach cobbler in the states and it was gorgeous.

One of the best things I've had in the states was a pretzel log. It looked like a large turd, but its a proper sausage wrapped in proper cheese wrapped in preztel dough. From the Amish market, God what I wouldn't give for a proper pretzel right now. Not the dry ones, but a soft, chewy, greasy salty proper one!!

Its probably a good thing I don't live there as I'd be housebound fat.

can someone remind me what half and half is?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/02/2021 20:43

@MajesticWhine

can someone remind me what half and half is?
I don't think there's an exact UK equivalent. It's milk with added cream. Halfway between milk and cream.
IHaveBrilloHair · 19/02/2021 20:46

I've always assumed its like slightly thinner single cream.
What's with all of the coffee creamers that are mainly oil?
They sound weird to me.

half milk/half cream. often used for coffee. or baking/cooking
MajesticWhine · 19/02/2021 20:53

I don't know quite how to react to the idea of lasagne soup. It doesn't sound quite right. Like pineapple on pizza or chicken tikka sandwich.

mathanxiety · 19/02/2021 21:02

I'm pretty sure the part that is used for Canadian bacon is what is called a boneless pork loin roast and also boneless pork loin chops in the US. It's not cured, but the Canadian bacon is.

mathanxiety · 19/02/2021 21:05

What"s wrong with the word 'and'?

As in macaroni and cheese?

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 19/02/2021 21:48

Some American food is wonderful. Collard greens, pecan pie, peach cobbler, bbq traditions. Like most places I reckon the food cooked from scratch is nice but the more processed foods less so.

RubyFakeLips · 19/02/2021 21:59

Is there a UK tater tot equivalent? Feel like I would love these, love potato croquettes.

Wbeezer · 19/02/2021 22:22

@TheLovelyChebbyMcGhee Puddledubs bacon is bacon crack, its our family lockdown treat, I save the fat for frying my homemade tattie scones in.

giantwaterbottle · 19/02/2021 22:40

Personally I love most American food, especially southern. I also love sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. But, I always think of this video when these threads come up

MustardMitt · 19/02/2021 22:58

I hate it when I want to try and find a recipe and it’s just combine box of X and tin of Y. Especially when it has Ranch in it - what’s Ranch? Not available here I can tell you!

I remember commenting on a post on Pinterest once - it was something like, take a box of cake mix and add extra butter eggs and milk and your cake will be lovely. I mean - why not just buy the flour and sugar and make it properly?!

I’m so perplexed with the amount of convenience foods masquerading as proper meals - that Kraft mac and cheese thing is like those pots of pasta on the go I used to take to work.

That being said - there’s a lot of stuff I do like - but it fucks me off so much when Americans make scathing remarks about British foods and then have the nerve to say ramen with a slice of cheese food is delicious!

SusannahSophia · 19/02/2021 23:02

OMG, sweetened condensed milk and a cup of sugar in a pasta ‘salad!’ Bloody hell, my arteries...

Beetle76 · 19/02/2021 23:03

@Ylfa where do you find a cheese dog? Is that a meat-free corn dog ie. cheese instead of a hot dog sausage, deep fried in corn based batter? I’ve only ever had those in South Africa of all places (many decades ago!) and when I ask for them in the US, people think I’m from another planet...

I’m surprised meat loaf hasn't featured more in this thread. I have a thing for mashed potatoes at the moment, but need proper gravy with that, but having looked at the meatloaf recipes, I can’t see where the gravy comes from, unless it’s just instant?

And to the person who wanted English bacon, I’m very fortunate in that there is a British restaurant in our town so we pick up bacon butties fairly often. The bacon is excellent, but they use toasted brioche rolls, which are nice and all, but what I’d do for that bacon on some unsweetened, fresh white bread!!!

I agree with those who have posted supporting using canned goods. Given the choice of using decent canned goods, when food is preserved when it’s at the best of the season, is far preferable to using flavourless, watery, out-of-season fresh.

I don’t often rtft, but this time I have!!! I’m now seriously hungry!!

Beetle76 · 19/02/2021 23:12

Oh, I forgot to say don’t knock a tater tot breakfast casserole until you’ve tried one. To be fair, the one I ate was made by one of the best home cooks I know, who usually cooked everything from scratch, but this was so good! And practical as she had to cook breakfast for a vast number of people and she didn’t want to be a short order chef all morning. It was basically like a nice quiche Lorraine, but instead of pastry, it was a layer of tater tots 😋

QueenPaw · 19/02/2021 23:23

I always am envious of the big cartons of liquid coffee creamer in loads of flavours. Why don't we have that in the U.K.?

I also adore eggnog but again, hard to find

QueenPaw · 19/02/2021 23:27

@RubyFakeLips they're delicious! There's a BBQ place near me (in the U.K.) that has them on the menu
Pic of their grilled cheese stuffed with BBQ brisket

@ZZTopGuitarSolo

Thank you - I do love a good scone. Cream then jam though Grin
Erroneous.

It's jam then cream. Even Her Majesty knows this.
