Boring but important duvet cover question

Bearsbearsbears40 · 17/02/2021 21:43

Hi all, does anyone have any surefire tips for getting a duvet to get to (and stay) all the way to the edges of the duvet cover. Every duvet cover I own ends up with a gap at the top, i.e. the end near my head, and it really annoys me every night!

(Lockdown and being at home all the time is really not helping my obsession with this problem!) 😀😂

Is it the type of duvet you’ve got? I only rarely get the gap but a good shake sorts it.

LiquidGlee · 17/02/2021 21:46

Sew a little ribbon loop into the inside top corners of the duvet cover and then sew two little pieces of ribbon to the top corners of your duvet. When you make the bed tie the ribbon to the loops and it will stay put!

TheRhythmlessMan · 17/02/2021 21:51

Place each corner in their positions from the inside then, from the outside, hold those top corners and shake while holding top rim taut. If I really want to go to town I sometimes even splash out by finding the edge of the duvet all the way along that top rim.

We know how to party.

@TheRhythmlessMan 😂😂 it’s like party central in my house tonight!

I do the inside out thing when changing the duvet, but even with a shake I can’t seem to get it to stay in place. Perhaps it is just because it’s an older duvet losing it’s shape a bit

Nah don't do the fancy schmancy inside-out manoeuvre. Waste of time.

Do what I do and actually CLIMB into the duvet cover with the top corners of the stain-ridden duvet and make sure the buggars stay put.

TheRhythmlessMan · 17/02/2021 22:19

Actually now that I think more about it, these duvet cover manufacturers may well be discriminating against those of us who are not blessed with long enough arms in order to simultaneously hold both these bloody corners in place.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 17/02/2021 22:22

What size duvet have you got and are you getting it the right way round when you put the cover on? Ours is king-size and looks as though it's square, but it isn't. If you get it the wrong way round it's a pain.

Fuckingcrustybread · 17/02/2021 22:23

Most times the inside out method works for me, I did struggle with a king size duvet, the duvet is wider than it's long, iykwim. I kept trying to put the duvet in the wrong way. It was easy once I'd worked that out.

SwedishEdith · 17/02/2021 22:26

Ikea used to make them with small gaps at the non-opening end so you could get your hand in to grab and shake it properly. And then they stopped doing that Angry

TheRealMrsJamieFraser · 17/02/2021 22:29

Omg yes.
Recently got a king size and it's driving me insane.
I know how HOW to make a bed and didn't ever have this issue with a double.
My plan for this weekend (how bloody rock and roll) is to try sewing the ribbons in trick. Will let you know how I get on.

DH thinks it might be because the duvet itself has quite a smooth, slidey feel to it - I might make him sew it instead!

ShakespearesSisters · 17/02/2021 22:31

I've a super king duvet. It an allseasons, so has buttons to attach it to the thinner one. I made some button holes and sewed them in the correct places all along the top (I think there is 5) i button it up and then just pull duvet cover down and zip it up. You could add buttons to yours and button holes.
Prior to this we would end up with a foot of duvet cover with no duvet in it every morning and all sitting at the bottom instead.

chipsandgin · 17/02/2021 22:42

A life changing revelation for me (yep, life has become a little ‘smaller’ of late!) was that my entire life I’d been putting duvets in duvet covers the wrong way.

Singles are obvious, doubles are square so you can’t go wrong....but with King and Superking and any larger duvet the longest length of the duvet and duvet cover goes horizontally. On the whole this means that the lines on the duvets go across the bed not up and down. Because the duvet cover is wider than it is long you need to put the duvet in wider than it is long too (several ways of saying the same thing there - but it took a while for the penny to drop with me!). Once the duvet has been put in correctly there is no more flapping!

(just want to say I’m a reasonably intelligent Mum of two with a responsible grown up job & I left home over 30 years ago....hopefully, despite the fact that this makes me sound a little bit ‘lacking’ I’m not walking around with my pants on backwards!)..

TheRhythmlessMan · 17/02/2021 22:47

@chipsandgin (I've just checked my pants)

So... hang on... so a king sized duvet is wider than it is long?! Whaaat??? The lines should run horizontally across the bed???

I seriously thought I had mastered this duvet cover business! 😩

theconstantinoplegardener · 17/02/2021 22:47

I have the exact same problem. The strange thing is, I've had my duvet for many years, but it's only started sliding down inside the duvet cover quite recently. I decided that the duvet cover must have stretched, and boil-washed it to shrink it a bit. It didn't help.

TheRealMrsJamieFraser · 17/02/2021 22:47

Do you know @chipsandgin I did question whether DH was doing it right Grin
Might try it just to be sure before getting the sewing box out! It doesn't seem to be the wrong way round, it fills the cover when the bed is made - it's only once we've been in it for more than 5 mins that the annoying gap appears!

TheRhythmlessMan · 17/02/2021 22:48

I am SO not going to sleep well tonight.

God help us all

SteelMack · 17/02/2021 23:32

I have no tips or advice but just want to say how hilarious this thread is. Made my night!

Bearsbearsbears40 · 17/02/2021 23:56

Ooh, well this is a more complex problem than I’d thought! I’ve never thought that the duvet might be the wrong way round (it’s a king). Going to try and switch it around over the weekend and see what happens.

Honestly, I came to bed about an hour ago and now I’m lying here awake in the dark thinking about duvet alignment (yes, with the “gap” for company!)

@chipsandgin drum roll . . . . . . changed the bed last night - put it with lines across instead of up and down = NO BLOODY ANNOYING GAP this morning. A revelation I tell you.

It's no lie to say you may have saved my marriage so thank you GrinFlowers

StarlightLady · 20/02/2021 17:42

I usually swear at it.

OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2022 11:51

I'm reviving this as I wanted to know which way round the lines go, also didn't know doubles are square Blush.

So the lines on a duvet are meant to be parallel to the end of the bed, not the sides? For some reason I thought the longest but went head to toe, which makes no sense at all thinking about it.

Just bought two new duvets and sets and want to get this right.

PumperQuarter · 30/11/2022 12:11

@OneFrenchEgg thank you!! This is life changing. Judging by this thread. The lines should be parallel to the top and bottom of the bed, they shouldn't run straight up and down. Wild.

OneFrenchEgg · 30/11/2022 12:12

I know! I googled which way round do duvets go, and this came up! Now I feel like an adult 😀

cantforthelifeofme · 01/12/2022 22:52

Duvets should come with bloody instructions

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/12/2022 22:56

If you use the inside out method, just secure top corners of duvet to cover with giant nappy pins while still inside out.
