Boring hoover question.. are sharks any good?

Hi so I had a Henry but moved house and had no where to store him so I got a cordless dyson one..but it's rubbish! Blocks up if it picks anything thicker than a dog hair .. not impressed but am stuck for what Hoover you get next. Any recommendations? I've heard sharks are good. I've got pets and a shedding daughter so needs to be good at picking up hair x

Yes and it's a pain, constantly having to clear the filter and it spits out a lot. I've had a Dyson too and that was rubbish. In my experience Henry is the best and I'm considering bringing him back in from the shed even if it will kill my back going up three flights of stairs. I've heard Miele are very good though?

bellropes · 17/02/2021 17:44

They're adequate, but not brilliant. Ours is top heavy and keeps falling over - usually onto my foot. They're heavy. They spit stuff out. Suction is so so, but you need to keep washing the filter and emptying it. They're cheaper than Dysons and I'd say the suction is marginally better.

Mabelface · 17/02/2021 17:51

I love mine. Got the corded liftaway for pets and it's the best one I've ever had. It's got a roller to help prevent hair choking it up that's easy to take out and clean.

DH does the vacuuming and he loves our Shark though he'd like to upgrade to the special hair thingy they bought out just after we got ours as my hair gets everywhere. Never had a suction or spitting out issue with the shark.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/02/2021 17:54

Oh no is the dyson crap? I need cordless and was looking at the dyson

cheezy · 17/02/2021 17:57

It’s okay. I like how easy it is to use but yes I think it needs emptying more often than others. A henry wouldn’t be practical for me in my new house.

lardass88 · 17/02/2021 18:11

Hmmm thanks for the replies.. I'm not sure what to do .. can anyone recommend a decent Hoover?
@OnlyFoolsnMothers I don't think I'd buy one again if I'm honest. Had it for around a year and not happy with its performance

Corded liftaway shark. Really good.

abc31 · 17/02/2021 18:16

I had a Miele pet one which was good but very heavy. I've gone back to a Sebo, this time a pull along one (Airflow?) rather than an upright. It's pretty good but the bags are quite small so the cost mounts up.

sallyjuliet · 17/02/2021 18:21

I love my shark. It’s so good at picking up pet hair and my long hair. We live in a town house and the shark is great as it’s so light carrying it up and down the stairs :) we had an Amazon hoover before this one. It was a cord one with a bag that needed replacing/emptying. It was amazing but to heavy to carry up and down the stairs all the time

TalskiddyTreacleMiner · 17/02/2021 18:24

I love mine. I've got the corded lift away one and it's the best vacuum I've had. It does have a tendency to fall over quite easily but I can put up with that for its superior suction skills.

NuzzleandScratch · 17/02/2021 18:27

We got the Shark lift away one at Xmas, and I've been really impressed with it. Previously had the Miele pet one, which was rubbish (we have dogs). Years ago we had an upright Dyson, which I loved, but I think the Shark is equally as good. Like the lift away feature too. Only small bugbear is the cord isn't as long as the Miele, but I think the Miele cord may be unusually long.

joystir59 · 17/02/2021 18:30

Corded Shark Liftaway brilliant. Cordless vaccum's are the devil's work

lardass88 · 17/02/2021 18:44

This one? There's so many models 😳

I hate my shark, a corded pet lift away.

It’s useless, blocks constantly. Every filter gets stuck and needs cleaning all the time. I can’t do a full house without unlocking it once and we are not filthy!
Hair still gets stuck in the brush and through all the pipes.
It also falls over when you try and use the hose attachment.
I’ve already had a replacement motor and it’s less than a year old!

Laiste · 17/02/2021 19:05

Just been reading the reviews on Amazon for this and a good many mention it falling over when you use the hose. Also not getting into corners and not enough clearance on hard floors to pick up bigger crumbs - like bits of cat litter. You have to lift it and 'put the head over it' to get them up.

Lots said it's heavy.

Lots also said it picks up loads of dirt and hair, but then i'd expect nothing less from a £200 machine straight out of it's box.

I'm also looking for a light weight upright vacuum for upstairs (carpet + hard floor). Still stumped like you OP!

cluecu · 17/02/2021 19:15

I have a Henry but considering a shark due to the weight of the Henry and also it's quite old now. What always confuses me how reviews for sharks/Dysons etc can vary so much when they're doing such a similar and narrow range of actions? How can they be amazing and terrible at sucking dust and hair? Confused So I keep putting it off.

Midlifeponderer · 17/02/2021 19:17

I like my cordless shark although the anti hair wrap function is a waste of time.

However, I think that comparing a Henry with the Shark is like comparing a pneumatic drill with something you’d use to put up a picture hook. Henrys are indestructible, great for heavy duty mess and dust. They are also a PITA to carry around. The shark is easy to move around, much quicker for a quick whizz round and much better on the stairs. I kept my Henry when I got the shark as I know it’ll still be needed sometimes

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 17/02/2021 19:19

I refuse to use mine . I loathe the bloody thing , I find the shark crap , hardly picks up anything . I used it once since we got it year before last . I clean for a living , I liked my Dyson before it packed up , but much prefer the Henry it’s just really crappily designed so trying to use the thing on the stairs doesn’t work , bulky and heavy but the best one , mine lives in the shed for that very reason, the stairs
DS2 hoovers twice a week with the shark as like I said I refuse to use the crappy thing . I think mines a lift away .
When this one packs up I’ll probably go back to a Dyson, but I’ve heard Meile are good , personally not tried it myself

Ostryga · 17/02/2021 19:19

I have a vendetta against Sharks (and MN!)

I was planning on getting a Dyson, but read a thread on here saying Sharks were The One and thought right, save some money, get a better machine.

WRONG.

Fuck me, I might as well hoover with a sack of potatoes, and they’d probably suck more dirt up. It’a so heavy and infuriating. I had to buy a Henry before I had a rage induced heart attack every time I hoovered.

So no, they’re not very good Grin

MaryIsA · 17/02/2021 19:21

We’ve got a cordless shark,it’s ok for a quick run around. But it’s light so i use it more often.

The best thing we have is a roomba.

My old Henry was better but too heavy ...

MaryIsA · 17/02/2021 19:23

It falls over.

AlwaysLatte · 17/02/2021 19:23

I love our lift away, the corded version. I recommended it to my brother and he loves it too.

WinoLino · 17/02/2021 19:24

Another lover of the lift away shark here

Notnownotneverever · 17/02/2021 19:26

Interesting. My Shark is fantastic. Never had any major issues and doesn’t spit out anything unless it has sucked up something too large but that is the same with any vacuum.
The only slight annoyance is that they do fall over but once you realise this you then lay it down if you are going to stretch the hose.
But I do look after them like any equipment and clean the filters regularly. I think it helps.
