Just wanted to share this

There was a thread the other day about a loo in a bedroom, no door.

I told my mum. Turns out she was invited to a house in the Docklands, in the 90s, the couple had a basement kitchen and basement loo and the loo was behind...a clear glass door, in full view of the kitchen.

When she inevitably had to ask to use the loo - she made sure they were in the lounge when she asked, which was ground floor - they just said "yes, you've seen where it is".

But it was a drinks party and there was obviously no guarantee that people wouldn't go downstairs...so she asked if there was a different bathroom she could use. They weren't happy but did show her to the upstairs loo, while muttering crossly that the basement loo was for guests.

The main bathroom upstairs had a proper door.

She also thinks it's not new as she has seen it in hotels!! The glass door, I mean, not the loo just right there in the bedroom.

What is wrong with people?!

We went to a hotel a few years ago with a clear glass wall to the bathroom. When you closed the door, the entire wall magically flashed and you couldn't see through it! It was like magic!

I've also seen outdoor public loo's that are one way mirrored glass...you can see out but no one can see in. I think I'd have performance issues. Couldn't be doing with that. 😳

Why do people invent this nonsense?!

I remember going to the toilet at the top of the Shard. That was clear glass and while I sat there I had the most amazing view across London. I didn't linger though as I was worried people could set their binoculars on me from other tall buildings and get a free peep show!

Surely no one can see in though?

This reminds me a few years back, I got invited round a friends and her partner's for a drink they also had a teenage son. All was fine, until I asked to use the toilet. You had to go into the kitchen to get to it and the upper half of the door was plain glass with no curtain or nothing up. So you sat directly in view of anyone in the kitchen or heading through the hallway. If that wasn't bad enough, there was also a shower in there and that was their only bathroom in the house! They'd lived there for around 5 years or more so it clearly didn't bother them..

Love the Shard loos.

There is a button to make a blind come down (DC very much enjoyed that) but we did our wees with a view.

I’ve been to a bar like this and at the start of the night, everyone makes sure the doors are closed properly. But by the end when everyone is half cut they all forget to close the doors properly and just go for it with the doors completely see through
WhatAreWordsWorth · 17/02/2021 12:48

I’ve stayed in a couple of hotels with clear glass bathrooms where you can see straight through. I don’t even like DH seeing me on the loo, let alone if I was sharing a room with a friend or something? Bizarre idea, IMO.

fitflopqueen · 17/02/2021 13:00

we have stayed in a few hotels now abroad where there is a window into the bathroom - always have an internal blind though, can't be doing with that nonsense. I dislike ensuite bedrooms too unless they are particularly large with a dressing area first.

Eyeslikethesea · 17/02/2021 13:08

I have nightmares about this lol

Mum said there was a hotel chain who did this and then were surprised they had to fit blinds.

Is glass cheaper than MDF or something?

The bar mentioned above sounds like a nightmare.

One of our showers and loo has a full view. The shower is literally next to floor to ceiling glass! I love a shower with a view.

FYI, we are on a steep hill, overlooking nothing and a lake, with nothing beyond. So someone would have to have good binoculars on a boat to look in.

Do you ever have guests?

I went to visit my BIL’a rather trendy office while visiting their city. Their toilet was rather grand, but had a floor length window that looked out onto a flat roof, where builders had been working! Not ideal

WeAllHaveWings · 17/02/2021 13:31

The Skylounche Ramada Plaza Basel in Switzerland has this. Stayed there a lot with work as HQ was in Basel.

The bar on the 30th floor is quite disconcerting as there is so much floor to ceiling glass. When you go to the loo they have full length windows and part of the floor is glass too and you can see people walking about the Plaza below you.

By the time we had a meal out and a few drinks and made it back to the Skylounche for a night cap I was always to tipsy to care if the windows were two way and if anyone could see me have a quick pee. Not sure if I would like sober or if I was messing around with tampons etc.

I worked on a central london hotel fit out that put glass walls/doors on the bathrooms.

It's so dirty old men can watch prostitutes in the bathroom apparently.

Caspianberg · 17/02/2021 13:55

@LunaHeather - yes. It’s actually in part of the house that is rented out separately as a holiday let in the summer. It’s a key thing that guests love! People book it knowing they can shower with a view.

My dad calls it ‘ the poo with a view!’ 🙄🤣

Bilgepumper · 17/02/2021 13:57

I once stayed in a Gite in France, with a newish boyfriend. The loo was behind a curtain in the bedroom. I struggled with going for a poo all week. Grin

Clawdy · 17/02/2021 14:10

This reminded me of going away for the weekend with two other couples, to a cottage in Wales belonging to the family of one of the girls. When we arrived she showed us the only toilet, on the ground floor. It had a handwritten notice on the wall "We don't flush for wees! " She explained the flush didn't work, so if anyone did a poo, they would need to fill the bucket provided, with water from the kitchen tap, and pour it down the loo to get rid! So all weekend, if you saw someone in the kitchen filling a bucket, you knew exactly what they'd just done! Shock

LunaHeather · 17/02/2021 14:18

Eliza - can't they just stand in the doorway?!

Caspian - oh, a different part of the house is different.

I don't think I will be going to bars again but I will be sure to look places up before agreeing to go.

There's a sky toilet up a mountain in Austria with incredible views. We found it when skiing. The glass is one way only so no one can see in but it is a bit disconcerting to sit and pee while watching everyone else whizz past on the ski lift.
We arranged it so my daughter would nip round at the right time and wave at me!!

Caspianberg · 17/02/2021 14:52

@LunaHeather - oh yes, I mean the bathroom has a view outside, but from inside it’s like an average bathroom with walls, a door and privacy. So if anyone else is with you they can’t see in from the hallway or anything.

Caspianberg · 17/02/2021 14:55

@PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle - there’s a ski in and out toilet in Austria also. You keep your skis on and ski in one door, pee and ski straight back out!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 17/02/2021 14:58

@Caspianberg
I can't work out the logistics of this!! How do you unzip and lower bottom half of clothing and get close enough to a toilet with skis on??? Once I started to squat I'd be skiing downhill naked from the waist down!

Snowymcsnowsony · 17/02/2021 15:00

What about one of these?
