When to stop cutting grapes?

DC is 6yo and I'm still slicing grapes in half (lengthways of course). It occurred to me that perhaps I am being ridiculous and over anxious. I was terrified by various news stories and a baby first aid course.

When did/will you stop?

I still do it and one is an adult, I do it for myself too! I have taught mine to bite them before putting in whole, am the same about cherry tomatoes.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 16/02/2021 22:33

I still cut them in half for all of mine. Ages 15, 14, 10 and 7. It's almost habit now 😳. Not in the house though. I worry about them running around at school with them. My 15 year old DD said that one of her friends also still has her grapes halved so she doesn't mind!

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 16/02/2021 22:34

And yes, I do this for cherry tomatoes too.

I cut them into quarters for my DD2 and have found myself doing the same for me when I put them in cereal 😂

balloonsintrees · 16/02/2021 22:35

13 months, by which point she was nabbing them from the fruit bowl herself.
Eldest (now 14 years old never had them cut)

Elzbells · 16/02/2021 22:36

I still cut my 13 and 10 year olds grapes. They also don't have mini eggs, Maltesers etc

I do have anxiety around choking though make makes me more neurotic than other people.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/02/2021 22:36

Ds is 9 and I still cut them, and cherry tomatoes. The fear is real!

Quornflakegirl · 16/02/2021 22:37

I have recently stopped, dc are 8.

MegBusset · 16/02/2021 22:38

I still do for mine age 11 and 13. Takes seconds, might save their lives - seems a no brainer.

MintChocAddict · 16/02/2021 22:44

Mine are 14 and 10 and still cut them. Also slice hot dogs length wise too.

TableFlowerss · 16/02/2021 22:45

MadeForThis · 16/02/2021 22:47

Sicily question, are normal sausages a risk or just hotdogs?

MadeForThis · 16/02/2021 22:48

Silly question

IseeIsee · 16/02/2021 22:50

I still cut for both myself and DS. Don't intent to stop. It only takes 2 min

Alienchannell21 · 16/02/2021 22:50

I still do it for my 9 year old

Inastatus · 16/02/2021 22:50

Probably around the age of 7/8. I made them both aware that they had to bite straight away with grapes/cherry toms etc. I nearly choked once and I’m completely paranoid! Games where people throw peanuts in the air and try to catch them or stuff as many marshmallows in your cheeks as you can make me feel very anxious!

PrincessTuna · 16/02/2021 22:50

I think it's anything round that can form a plug in the airways @MadeForThis. Maybe hotdogs always get mentioned cos you eat without cutlery (unless you went to Eton).

pursuedbyablackdog · 16/02/2021 22:52

I don't cut them up at home as I watch them like a hawk when they are eating. But I cut them up if going in school lunch box. I dunno my mates and I always used to see how many we could stuff in our mouths🤦‍♀️. So I just figure if I cut them up there is less risk to numpty behaviour 😬 they are 8 and 10!

TableFlowerss · 16/02/2021 22:52

I told my dd off today for shoving half a banana in to her mouth. I turned to look at her and could see it poking out each check and she couldn’t speak. Made her spit it out and told her not to take such big mouthfuls! Gives me the fear

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 16/02/2021 22:57

A friend is a paediatrician. Told me she still cuts them up for her 12 year old. Basically because she knows they're virtually impossible to get out. She's seen too many scary things.

TableFlowerss · 16/02/2021 23:16

I remember being about 9/10 and eating ‘gob stoppers’ fire balls they were called.

No wonder my poor mam went a ghostly shade of white when I showed her them...

minipie · 17/02/2021 08:15

Think I stopped about age 5

After that, I stopped because I wanted them to learn to chew them - because there was always a risk they’d be given uncut grapes at someone else’s house and if they’d only ever had cut up grapes at home they might not realise/remember.

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/02/2021 08:16

I would continue personally, especially at school when they try and eat super fast to get more play time!

FelicityPike · 17/02/2021 08:19

My DD is almost 6 and has never had a lollipop. They give me the absolute fear! Especially seeing toddlers with them.
