Hoovers, best, worst & how often do you replace?

Following on from a thread about sofas.
How often do you replace your hoover?
What would you recommend.
I’ve had a Sebo X4 for around 8 years & am thinking of replacing it. I did buy a Gtech to use upstairs when I had a bad shoulder as the Sebo is very heavy. But it was rubbish. I had to charge it twice to do the whole house.

I like a corded Hoover with a bag, so am thinking of another Sebo. They do a lovely pastel pink one.

This thread is a bit old now, so if you've landed here looking for recommendations, we have recently updated our guide to the best vacuum cleaners as tried and tested by the Mumsnet team. We hope you find it useful.

We've had a Dyson for 15 years and 6 (?) years ago got a Dyson DC35 handheld. The big one is annoying now because the clip has broken off so the main attachment falls off every now and again, but still has better suction than the handheld now does. Handheld is used more as it's more convenient but I do want to consider replacing them in the next couple of years. I will have to replace with another Dyson so am leaving it as long as possible/ until I see a good offer.

I always had Dysons for years, but I bought a new Vax vacuum cleaner about 18 months ago. It was crap. Build quality awful: really flimsy brittle plastic that got broken, and couldn't empty it without getting covered in filth. So... I bought a sebo! It's very robust and should last a long time. Don't think it has the most powerful suck, but I don't have much carpet anyway. And I love having bags, so much nicer.

Campions · 16/02/2021 12:44

Personally I have never found anything better than a Sebo.

I meant to add that I think Dysons have deteriorated in quality a little over the past few years.

PickAChew · 16/02/2021 13:27

I replace when broken. I have the sebo x4, too, which I keep upstairs, where we have carpets. I use a basic miele on the hard floors, downstairs.

Also have an ancient Dyson handheld which is no more effective or easy to use than a dustpan and brush.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/02/2021 13:33

We have a 9yo Henry. No plans to replace at the moment as it works well. Had to do a minor repair on the pipe connector.

Will replace when Henry dies. My parents one lasted 15years.

Ifailed · 16/02/2021 13:36

I've got a Henry that's at least 23 years old, still going strong.

RuthTopp · 16/02/2021 13:40

Have had my Sebo for at least 6 years , still really good. Also have a cordless Shark so I tend to swap the two about for cleaning.

toria658 · 16/02/2021 13:41

4 year old Dyson corded upright animal pro. Great suction, but the bloody thing falls over at any opportunity when using the nozzle attachment for cobwebs, nooks and crannies. The long nozzle has a very small circumference meaning sometimes items get stuck, like leaves from the conservatory plants. I will replace when it dies but it is an annoying machine. Had my last Dyson for 11 years. With two dogs, and disabled DH who unintentionally spills things I don’t feel a battery operated one would have the power to deal with this household.

BearSoFair · 16/02/2021 13:42

We had a (corded) Dyson for 5-ish years, replaced with a (also corded) Shark on Black Friday, so far very impressed. Much lighter and easier to get around tight corners, also didn't really realise how many bits the Dyson was leaving on the carpets until we replaced it! Only downside is the Shark doesn't fit under the edges of furniture so well, the Dyson was less bulky at the front. Have a cordless Vax shoved in a cupboard that is awful, as soon as you turn it off it spits half of the dust and dirt back out onto the floor.

Hotcuppatea · 16/02/2021 13:44

Henry all the way. The last one we had went strong for 10 years. It only stopped working when we used it to vacuum up building dust from our loft extension.

Viviennemary · 16/02/2021 13:45

When I first got my Henry years ago I liked it. Began to hate it. Awkward cumbersome thing taking up loads of room. I got a Shark a few months ago after reading about them on MN. I love it. Nearly bought a Dyson.

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/02/2021 13:50

I am on my second SEBO ( the first is now at DCs flat) . They are really good but very heavy. The original is about 15 years old now . Prior to that we had a Dyson which drove me mad with bits falling off for 8 years or so and prior to that a brilliant Electrolux cylinder vacuum which had to be retired when we could no longer get spare parts ( about 20 years). In our weekend house ,which is small ,we have a cordless Bosch which I love. It has good suction and is easy to whizz all round and up the stairs etc. Highly recommended unless you have a huge house with a lot of hairy carpets.

Kottbullar · 16/02/2021 13:51

When we first moved in we couldn't afford a vacuum and had a second hand Eubank carpet sweeper!
Then we were given a second hand AEG when my parents upgraded.
We had this for about two years then bought a Dyson that I Ioathed and changed to a Miele three years later.
That lasted for 14 years then stopped working so we replaced with another although it's now been fixed and has gone with DD to her university flat.

wonkylegs · 16/02/2021 13:53

I'm nearly at 13 years with my Miele silence one , have replaced the hose after a cleaner stepped on it weirdly and split it but otherwise it's still going strong.
Had a Dyson before that which was heavy, noisy and only lasted 3years.

Stickytreacle · 16/02/2021 13:54

I have a bit of an obsession with hoovers, currently have:-
Eufy which is fine for a tidy up, but doesn't deep clean.

Bosch Athlet, really good, but batteries die after a year or so and the connections in the handle can be temperamental.
Miele cat and dog, an excellent vacuum, but I prefer an upright for carpets.

Kirby, solidly built, but so heavy I can't push it, plus it eats belts.

Vax airlift, good suction but apalling build quality.

Henry, used in the garage for cars and any building work/messy jobs.
My next one will probably be a sebo felix.

Kottbullar · 16/02/2021 13:55

I almost forgot my beloved Eufy-genia Doubtfire. He's two years old and one of my favourite possessions!

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 16/02/2021 13:56

Miele cat and dog - 10 years old.

Plus a new eufy S max.

Toomuchleopard · 16/02/2021 14:01

I used to have Miele cat and dog for years. I replaced a few bits during that time. It’s amazing but quite cumbersome for carting about and doing stairs etc. I now have the Dyson cordless which is rubbish. Suction is bad I don’t think the carpets are actually clean. It needs charging all the time and our charger is dodgy. It’s very handy for a quick once over but not for proper cleaning.

Ideally I’d have the Miele for proper weekly cleaning and the Dyson cordless for daily whizz round.

LER83 · 16/02/2021 14:45

I've had my miele c3 for about 5 years. Love it so won't replace until it falls apart. Had an upright vax before that but it was crap. My mums miele is about 15 years old and still going, and she's just got rid of her 20 year old Dyson as its too heavy for her.

PickAChew · 16/02/2021 14:55

You rotten lot have twisted my arm to add a eufy to my collection.

LadyCounterblast · 16/02/2021 15:12

I'm impressed @Stickytreacle you've got six vacuum cleaners!

I've got a Dyson corded upright (DC41 I think) and a Roomba.

The Dyson is two years old, it replaced a similar/identical one that was about nine years old. This one doesn't suck quite as hard (!) or feel quite as well screwed-together as the previous one, although it's okay. I'll be annoyed if I don't get at least five years out of it.

The Roomba is rubbish. I only hold onto it because it cost £400 and it does an acceptable job in one room (and one room only) and can go under certain furniture items that the Dyson can't. But its suction is poor, the bin is tiny and it keeps getting stuck on imaginary cliffs.

Personally, I don't think the trend for robot or cordless vacuum cleaners has led to better products. (At least, not as far as cleaning/suction power is concerned.) So I would hesitate before going for either a robot or a cordless, when the time comes to change mine.

Stickytreacle · 16/02/2021 15:48

@ladycounterblast, Embarassingly I've got 10, we acquired a second kirby from my cousin which is in our loft, and have an upstairs and downstairs miele. There are two bosch athlets also in the loft that dh has kept for spares (see earlier post re batteries.)
What I really need is a housekeeper to use them all!

poppyzbrite4 · 16/02/2021 15:50

I have a couple of robo hoovers and a Henry. I've never replaced the Henry and have had it for years. The robo hoovers are Eufy and I've had them less than a year so have no idea. I was going to buy a Miele to replace the Henry as it's a bother to store but got the robo ones instead.

Offredismysister · 16/02/2021 16:04

@Kottbullar my grandma gave me an old Eubank when I got my first house. She also gave me an old original hoover with a cloth body, which I loved.
