Due to get a new car and having a look and most of them (brand new) are electric. I'm a bit Confused about getting an electric car, does any one have one and what are they like? How do you charge them at home (sorry if that's a daft question)
Thanks

I’ve got a little Smart car, I got a free wall charger unit with it off BP.

ShopTillYouDropp · 13/02/2021 19:27

@Fluffycloudland77 how do you find it?

You need a charging socket installed - can charge from a normal plug but it will take forever. Hopefully you have a driveway for it. You'll also need the right tariff.

What kind of driving do you do? Long trips will take planning. Perfect as runabouts if you can afford the initial outlay.

My husband has just got one and loves it. It does 270 miles on a full charge and there are ten charging points in our small town. We love it it's a Kia.

MissBattleaxe · 13/02/2021 19:29

You don't need a charging point installed. There are more and more charging points popping up at garages and supermarkets. There's also an app telling you where all the charging points are. My husband is a real geek about it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/02/2021 19:30

I love it. I get home, plug it in and it knows what time to pre-heat before I leave in the morning. I can preheat at anytime if it’s an icy morning.

MissBattleaxe · 13/02/2021 19:30

It costs £8 for a full charge and it smells nicer too.

Beamur · 13/02/2021 19:31

Hybrid. Probably going to go 100% electric when we replace this one.
Have got a charging point outside. Pretty cheap to run. Get a discount on our energy supply for having it too..

heyfrog · 13/02/2021 19:31

Oh my god I love my electric car. We are just about to replace our other (petrol) car and there is no way we will do anything other than go electric for that too. We have a charger at home, cost about £500 to install and it's just great getting home, plugging it in and never ever having to go to a petrol station. Do it!!

ShopTillYouDropp · 13/02/2021 19:32

I'm quite liking the sound of it. I don't drive far, mainly just to work about which is about 10 miles a day and then just weekend shopping, taking kids out etc.
How do the charging points work? How do you pay,

Got a Nissan Leaf a few years ago when the range was 150 miles. Used it daily for the school runs and local trips, saving us a fortune on diesel (although I still miss my 7 seater Ford). I'd charge it about once a week or sometimes overnight if I knew I had a longer journey the next day.

DH drove it to the South of France 2 summers ago - I took the kids with me in our camper van. That took a bit of planning! But it meant that while we were on a campsite, we could trickle charge it as part of our pitch tariff.

mimiloveschoclate · 13/02/2021 19:39

We have a Leaf, dh was really keen, me less so, but I'm an absolute convert, I love it! We got our own charging point about a year after the car. Previous to that I used to charge it at the supermarket while I did the shopping, which was fine.

At the moment, with wfh and no school runs, we are charging it maybe once a week. In normal times maybe 2-3 times a week. When I think of the fortune I spent on petrol for our old car, gas guzzling 7 seater, we could actually go on a holiday with the money saved from petrol alone.

Go for it, you won't look back.

MissBattleaxe · 13/02/2021 19:39

DH has a swipe card or something. It's self service

mimiloveschoclate · 13/02/2021 19:42

For charging we have a card, just tap on the charger like a debit card.

Mercedes519 · 13/02/2021 19:43

I have a hybrid. Home charger. Saves hassle for long journeys but as it’s always been mostly local it’s 100% electric running.

However until we had the charger point fitted (you can get grants) we just charged it off the mains with an extension lead. It just takes longer.

Frazzled2207 · 13/02/2021 19:44

Yep we have a hyundai ioniq had it 18 months would never go back to petrol.
We have a Pod-Point at home now but we lasted six months plugging it into a 3 point plug in the garage. This is totally fine but takes overnight. Pod point takes 4 hours empty to fill but we rarely let it get below 50%. Costs pennies.
If you do low mileage you may never need a public charger. We have only ever used when going on Uk holidays. There’s various kinds and mostly payable but there are some free ones about. Generally speaking the fast ones are more expensive.
Rapids can fill up in 20 minutes for about £8.

Frazzled2207 · 13/02/2021 19:44

Empty to full

cloudjumper · 13/02/2021 19:45

DH and I both have electric cars, love them - never going back. We had a charge point installed, but you can charge with a normal socket - did that before the charge point was installed, and when we go on holiday (or used to).

Frazzled2207 · 13/02/2021 19:46

If you want to charge at home then you do need off street parking.
As long as you do you can probably just charge at home the vast majority of the time.

Pandemicjobhunting · 13/02/2021 19:46

I really fancy one so am very much watching this post!

wonkylegs · 13/02/2021 19:55

I've got an IPace, traded up from a PHEV so I guess I eased into the mindset before going fully electric.
We charge at home once or twice a week depending on mileage (IPace has quite a big range) Charge over night in the driveway. Can charge in town or closest city and have even noticed National Trust have charging points when we've visited.
Have a charging box on the wall of the garage but before we got that sorted we used the 3pin plug charger which was fine but a bit slower to charge.
I love it - it's really great fun to drive, the preheat function has been a godsend this past week and we are currently putting in solar panels and a battery on our new extension which will charge it. The cheaper fuel costs are offset by the higher vehicle costs but ours is on a good lease deal so it's not too expensive to own.

wonkylegs · 13/02/2021 19:58

Some charging points out and about are free, just plug and go or use their free app, some you have to register with their network apps with your credit card and pay through that that. We have free charging atm in our local town and closest city.

Brogues · 13/02/2021 20:48

Yes. I had a leaf but there was the odd journey where we were cutting it fine on the mileage but a great car overall although my local dealer had some issues fixing a very simple problem because not all of their technicians were qualified to work on EVs and customer services offered me a free tank of fuel to say sorry for the issues Hmm. Now I have a Tesla so can go much further and use super charging when doing a long journey. It is very plush and I’ve been very happy with the customer service. All software updates are at home via Wi-fi.

We have a charger installed at home so charge it up when the energy price is low (or negative) - I’d happily recommend Octopus energy (get a friend to send you a referral link so you both get £50) - there is a special tariff for EVs so you can charge up off peak for pennies. Likewise we have some free supercharger miles for referring people to Tesla too. I’ve never used a regular charger out and about personally.

Brogues · 13/02/2021 20:52

Oh, I also have solar panels so utilise free energy for to charge up when I’m home and it’s sunny.

12frogsincoats · 13/02/2021 20:52

No I don't
