Cost of having the gas central heating on all day?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/02/2021 18:14

Anyone got any ideas how much it costs to have the central heating on at 20 degrees for 16 out of 24 hours in the day? Average sized house with double glazing.

Probably £3 a day. Obviously depends on your insulation etc.

MechantGourmet · 13/02/2021 18:17

At this time of year, I mean. The thermostat won't click on when it's warmer.

Ch3rish · 13/02/2021 18:18

Read yout gas meter, then read it again 24 hours later and you can work it out based on your actual tariff and know the true answer. Any other answer is no help to you

There are tools online to help you estimate your energy bills, e.g.

www.ukpower.co.uk/home_energy/average-household-gas-and-electricity-usage
utility-assist.co.uk/calculator

As one data point, I just checked my last statement and I pay £430 a year for gas. 2 bed house and this winter the heating has been on from about 8am - 10pm each day.

helpfulperson · 13/02/2021 18:22

I've just had my first gas bill since I started doing this and its added about 1/3 to my monthly payment so not as bad as I thought.

But I cba to do all that because the meter is down in the cellar and really hard to reach, and I don't even know what our actual energy bill is as we pay by monthly direct debit, gas and electricity combined.

So I just thought I'd ask Mumsnet for a guestimate.

I mean is it £3 or £10 - I don't know! which is the most likely?

That's exactly my point, there is no likely answer, it totally depends on you specific circumstances. Maybe you could help me with how long my piece of string is likely to be Grin

Ours costs about £3 a day, we have a smart meter.

ThePricklySheep · 13/02/2021 18:33

How much do you currently have it on for and how much is your gas bill?
You’ve only got hot water in addition to that, so it might give you an idea.

Changi · 13/02/2021 18:34

As already said, reading the gas meter twice a few days apart is the only sure way.

We did it earlier in the week. £6.61 a day.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/02/2021 18:40

I have a dual fuel smart meter. It seems to bear little to no resemblance to the actual Bill.

Mine is on about 16 hours a day and sometimes overnight. I hate to think what the bill is going to be, but I'm currently saving a lot on petrol, do hopefully it'll even out.

I need to get the front doors replaced though it's very draughty!!

Wtfdidwedo · 13/02/2021 18:43

Mine's between 19 and 22 in winter and my dual fuel bill is £90 a month at the moment, in summer it's set to 18 and the bill is around £60.

izzyb6488 · 13/02/2021 18:44

The last couple of weeks jn this very cold weather ours has cost about £5 per day if we have the gas fire as well as gch

Dopeyduck · 13/02/2021 19:10

Our smart meter says £2.67 so far today for gas. Heating is on 21 - leaving the house about 19/20 degrees. Got it on 24/7 at the moment as we’re all home all time time and I was getting chilly in the night (it usually goes off at 22:30 when we’re not in a cold snap).

Dopeyduck · 13/02/2021 19:11

Oh and our house is a 4 bed detached with I’d say average insulation and double glazing etc .

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/02/2021 19:14

Interesting comments from the Smart Meter people. Perhaps we should cave and get one!

We pay roughly £50 a month for gas and electric and have the heating on 19 degrees 24/7.

Semi detached 3 bed house.

user1471538283 · 13/02/2021 19:18

I had a smart meter and I thought you could then have your bill adjusted so you wouldn't have a big bill! My bill was adjusted to £170 a month but I still had an excess bill of over £300 when we moved. Smart meters do not stop this!

Mintjulia · 13/02/2021 19:21

I have an old 4 bed house, newly double glazed. 2000 sq ft.

Thermostat on 18 degrees, it costs £3 for 8am-8pm

AubergineDream · 13/02/2021 19:23

Mine costs between £3 and £4, but it is only on low at night and sometimes not at all.

murbblurb · 13/02/2021 19:25

You need to know your unit cost on your tariff and how much gas you use. Do you at least know the first of these?

2X4B523P · 13/02/2021 19:39

My heating is on 24/7 and I average about £60 pcm on gas over the course of the year. I don’t pay any attention to cost this time of year but it will be much much higher than the summer. I have it set on 21 during the times I’m home and awake and 19 the rest of the time.

Circa 1890 2 bed semi and combi boiler, usage for hot water is minimal as I mostly use the electric shower.

abc31 · 13/02/2021 19:48

I have to confess that I got a bit fed up of everyone moaning how cold the house is so I measured our gas consumption for one hour of central heating, converted it into kWh and priced it on our current tariff.

It worked out at £1 per hour. And yes, I clearly have too much time on my hands....

ginghamstarfish · 13/02/2021 19:50

Impossible to generalise, one person living in an old draughty house vs another in a small modern flat will have wildly different bills!

chickadeeeeeeeee · 13/02/2021 19:56

About £5-7 per day,

Thermostat at 17.5

4 bed detached 1930s house

On from 7am-10pm
