Cost of having the gas central heating on all day?

Anyone got any ideas how much it costs to have the central heating on at 20 degrees for 16 out of 24 hours in the day? Average sized house with double glazing.

Use your phone to stretch and take a photo of the meter, if it's out of reach.

OTOH, if you never read it then how imaginary are your bills?

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2021 20:42

Depends what tariff you're on, depends what you mean by 'averaged sized house', depends if your thermostat is accurate, depends how good your insulation is and how leaky your windows are, depends how efficient your boiler is, depends whether you close internal doors, etc etc.

@ginghamstarfish

Impossible to generalise, one person living in an old draughty house vs another in a small modern flat will have wildly different bills!
Yeah, so that's why I was quite specific about 1) the size of the house 2) the state of the insulation 3) the hours the heating is on 4) the temperature we heat the house to.

I don't see what number of people living in the house has to do with it (other than number of showers per day maybe) but the answer is 3.

You've been told how to do it, but think a load of randoms can actually estimate. You cant be arsed to go to the meter and don't know how to read your bills.

Entitled much??

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/02/2021 21:08

combatbarbie - so if my annual gas and electricity bill is £1500 (say) payable in equal instalments across the 12 months, how do I work out how much the gas central heating is costing me (excluding the electricity) per day in February when I have it on for 16 hours per day as opposed to in July when I have it on 0 hours per day?

By working out how many units per day you use which you can't be arsed to do and multiplying that number by your cost per unit.

It's also worth considering that it's not 'on' for 16 hours a day. The boiler heats the house to the temperature you tell it to, then it goes off for a while until the temperature drops, then it fires up again. The ratio of off to on obviously affects the cost, and is dependent on a variety of factors.

combatbarbie · 13/02/2021 21:28

So your bills don't tell you how much your using? Or can't you bothered to look online for that either.

PigletJohn · 13/02/2021 22:25

If you can't be arsed to look at your gas meter, I can't be arsed to tell you mine.

Papergirl1968 · 13/02/2021 22:58

Mine has cost me £2.78 since I put it on at about 11am today, so about 12 hours. Four bed semi. I don’t know how many degrees it’s set to but it’s only on low - I’d rather have it on low all day during cold snaps than short blasts of heat.

thevassal · 13/02/2021 23:15

How is "an average sized house" at all specific Grin
That could mean completely different things to different people! You didn't say how many bedrooms you have, how many bathrooms, how many radiators, what type of boiler, if all the radiators are turned on, even in spare rooms, how high they are set, if you've bled them recently, etc....
All of these could make a huge difference in the size of your bill, but even if you specified all of these exactly nobody on MN would be able to guess how much YOUR heating would be without knowing YOUR supplier AND your tariff. Even if it is closer to £3 or £10 a day - literally could be either (or even higher/lower) depending on who you are with and what tariff you are on. Seriously anything anyone says on here will be a total guess, just go and look at your meter or ask your energy supplier. Or get a smart meter since this is literally what they are designed to do...

Besides the ridiculous request for rent abatement, how much are we talking? Since being home our electric has gone up 20-30 a month with running multiple IT equipment and just generally being home 24/7. we are on oil heating and have had to top it up as heating is on 18hrs a day, normally a tank would see us through til March as Noone is usually in during the day.

I'm still of the view that the extra should be split between 2,3 & 4.
