Is this a scam?

In the run up to Christmas, I ordered a few presents online for DD. As they arrived, we hid them away and unboxed and wrapped them when we got the opportunity then discreetly disposed of the boxes. DH and I didn’t buy presents for each other or DS online so all were DD’s.

On Christmas morning, DD opened all her gifts that we had bought her. However, one of the gifts clearly wasn’t for her. It was a very expensive item for an adult. To begin with, I thought DH had bought it for me, but he just looked blankly at me and said he hadn’t bought it. He did remember wrapping it, however. It is not clear from the box what was inside so that kind of makes sense.

I Googled said item and it was worth more money than DH would ever pay. It was a truly luxury item.

I put in a cupboard and forgot about it. Then last week when we were out, a woman knocked at our door saying that the parcel was hers. DS didn’t let her in but did take her number.

I called her when I got home and asked her which address it should have been sent to. Her address is miles away from us! How could this happen? Could it be a scam? How did they even get our address?

I’m happy to hand over the parcel but I am feeling very uneasy about it.

Please elaborate

Did you receive all of the items you ordered for your DD?
Were all the things you ordered for DD delivered as expected?
After this time, I suspect she has already had a replacement or a refund - what is the date on the order she has shown you, could it be for the replacement?
Why on earth have you given her your phone number or email address?
What is it? Why the secrecy?
Why can't you say what it is?
Why did you just put it in the cupboard?
Did you have the delivery note this afternoon when you first posted?[/quote]
These questions have mainly been answered already or aren't really relevant to the the OP's post.

It doesn't matter whether all the DD's presents turned up or not. The OP doesn't have any particular reason to think this item was sent in place of one of her DD's presents. But even if it were she has no way to check since the shipping box it was sent in has already been thrown away.

She gave her contact details so the she could send over the "proof" of order. You may think she shouldn't have but it's done now and she can't undo it. There's no point harping on about it.

It doesn't matter what the item was. While it would satisfy our curiosity, it would probably be identifying if the OP has talked about this incident in RL, so she's wise to keep schtum.

They put the item in the cupboard because they didn't want to use it and they didn't know who to return it to (since they'd thrown out the shipping box it got sent in before they realised it wasn't something they'd ordered).

The treatment the OP has had on this thread from some posters, including you, has been bordering on bullying. It isn't even AIBU ffs.

Typical MN, turning itself inside out.

Dodgy, OP. Keep hold of it for a little longer and then sell it? I hope the woman doesn't come back.

@BrandyTrap what a nice story. I hope your DS and his girlfriend have a nice Valentine’s Day.

It sounds really weird to me, and a potential scam although I have no idea how!

Could she have ordered the item to a random address (yours), claimed it was never delivered and got a refund whilst planning to get it from you?

I wouldn't give her it tbh.

AdobeWanKenobi · 14/02/2021 11:26

@Tiktokersmiracle

You know what, the way some of you who clearly haven't rtft are treating op is disgraceful. I know we're in Lockdown and bored but fucksake. OP, send it back to the vendor. It's all too weird and scammy.
Thats a nice rant, barring one thing. You clearly haven't RTFT either or you would have seen OP mention several times she doesn't know who the vendor is 😂

@ehagat

Im not sure how it would be a scam, sounds like a parcel delivered to the wrong place.
Well if it was delivered to the wrong address, the company would refund/send out a new item. They wouldn't give the address it's been delivered to! That's a breech of GDPR.

If she put the wrong address on it, hence knowing where it actually went it's more than likely a scam.

I'd say you don't have it, you sent it back.

@LimaFoxtrotCharlie

We have received 4 Amazon deliveries now for our address, correct postcode but the name on the parcels is not ours. Nobody on our street with that name, we’ve asked. We contacted Amazon who said we should just keep the contents. But I don’t understand why this keeps happening - surely the purchaser would check why his orders haven’t arrived? Nobody has come to the door to collect them, so I don’t see how it could be a scam.
@LimaFoxtrotCharlie that's another well known scam. Ordering Amazon items to a different address and then posting fake reviews.
Roystonv · 16/02/2021 10:33

I think this is getting a bit 'trolly' as many can't understand how this all occurred i.e. not checking what is in boxes when they are delivered, storing them unopened and then later opening and wrapping the item inside without knowing/checking what the item is. Just a different way of doing things.
