Is this a scam?

In the run up to Christmas, I ordered a few presents online for DD. As they arrived, we hid them away and unboxed and wrapped them when we got the opportunity then discreetly disposed of the boxes. DH and I didn’t buy presents for each other or DS online so all were DD’s.

On Christmas morning, DD opened all her gifts that we had bought her. However, one of the gifts clearly wasn’t for her. It was a very expensive item for an adult. To begin with, I thought DH had bought it for me, but he just looked blankly at me and said he hadn’t bought it. He did remember wrapping it, however. It is not clear from the box what was inside so that kind of makes sense.

I Googled said item and it was worth more money than DH would ever pay. It was a truly luxury item.

I put in a cupboard and forgot about it. Then last week when we were out, a woman knocked at our door saying that the parcel was hers. DS didn’t let her in but did take her number.

I called her when I got home and asked her which address it should have been sent to. Her address is miles away from us! How could this happen? Could it be a scam? How did they even get our address?

I’m happy to hand over the parcel but I am feeling very uneasy about it.

OMG OP.... about a dozen people have asked you - isn't the company name on the receipt? But you keep ignoring that question... beginning to think you're scamming us!

LittleEntrepeneur · 13/02/2021 19:41

@jerrywesterby No it doesn’t, but the woman said I would be welcome to return it to the supplier so I’m sure she’d tell me.

A). What is the name of the company on the screenshot of the delivery note?

B). Why haven't you contacted this company?

And also C). What is the item?!

Cross posted. What kind of receipt doesn't contain the name of the company the item was bought from???

And also... what is the item??

LittleEntrepeneur · 13/02/2021 19:45

Fucking Hell! It’s a Screenshot of the order which contains the delivery details and the delivery note.

Why does it matter what the item is? It’s sheer nosiness and completely irrelevant to the issue.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 13/02/2021 19:45

OP have you answered the question yet on whether the shop's info was on the screenshot receipt she sent you?

Cissyandflora · 13/02/2021 19:46

How old is your baby OP? You’ve been asked more than once.

thequeenoftarts · 13/02/2021 19:47

Great well get the name of the company from the invoice google it for a proper address and fuck the item back in the post, job done

LittleEntrepeneur · 13/02/2021 19:47

@MolyHolyGuacamole I have answered. It doesn’t but the woman said I could return it to the shop, so I’m sure she’d give it to me.

This is like a bloody riddle.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/02/2021 19:47

OP doesn’t have a baby. She’s said several times.

TitusPullo · 13/02/2021 19:48

@DobbyTheHouseElk - it’s a reference to another thread where a poster wouldn’t say how old her baby was even though it was very very relevant to the thread.

LittleEntrepeneur · 13/02/2021 19:49

@Cissyandflora

How old is your baby OP? You’ve been asked more than once.
Where do I say that I have a baby??? I don’t!!!

This is all getting too much now. I think I need to leave the thread and deal with this quietly offline.

Oh!

Too obscure. Even I'm not on here all day 😂

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 13/02/2021 19:57

If she's supplied you with a copy of a despatch note with no company info, why would you think she would tell you the truth about where it came from if you ask? Confused

morninglive · 13/02/2021 19:58

It's easy to fake delivery notes.

jerrywesterby · 13/02/2021 20:03

Sorry OP - yeh it's well dodgy 😉

Squiffany · 13/02/2021 20:05

OP, have you contacted the police yet?

So what if it’s irrelevant? Everyone wants to know, why keep it a secret? Confused

Just our usual reminder that we don't allow troll hunting. And that if we had any concerns we would take down the thread.

Staffy1 · 13/02/2021 20:09

Is there at least an order number? If so, ask her for the company name, and then google the contact details for the company rather than using any contact details she provides, and ask them to either confirm that they haven't sent a replacement, in which case give it to her, or ask them to arrange to collect the item from you and send it to her.
(Or you could just give it to her if you don't want to be bothered with this as even if it is a scam, it hasn't affected your finances).

C0RAL · 13/02/2021 20:19

Heres an easy solution @LittleEntrepeneur

Look at the despatch note that she gave you . If it’s legit there will be a VAT number at the bottom. Put the number into this government website here and it will give you the company details.

www.gov.uk/check-uk-vat-number

If it’s a Uk company the number will be 9 digits long and start with the letters GB.

Other EU countries have their own format, which you can check here

www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-eu-country-codes-vat-numbers-and-vat-in-other-languages

Then you can contact the company directly and let them know that you have their item. As it’s a high value item they will no doubt arrange for a courier to collect it.

DumplingsAndStew · 13/02/2021 20:21

Her WhatsApp picture is a different ethnicity to the name on the card. The name is from a very specific country in Asia but her profile pic is not.

WTF? You do realise that people can move and live elsewhere, even if their name is from a 'very specific country in Asia'. They can even marry.

BrandyTrap · 13/02/2021 21:58

I'm sorry this is not helpful or relevant at all but ..

Early December a parcel was wrongly delivered to our house, and I opened it before realising it wasn't for us. It was obviously things meant for party bags so that evening I sent my ds round with the parcel to the right address.

The woman who answered the door was incredibly grateful and, to cut a long story short, my ds now has a lovely girlfriend :)

Hope you sort this out op.

Tiktokersmiracle · 13/02/2021 23:07

You know what, the way some of you who clearly haven't rtft are treating op is disgraceful.
I know we're in Lockdown and bored but fucksake.
OP, send it back to the vendor. It's all too weird and scammy.
