I didn’t know a cheesecake had cheese in it!

Okay, not these days, cos I’m a sophisticated and cultured woman now, Smile but I can clearly remember being utterly astonished as a teenager to find out a cheesecake had cheese in it.

In my defence, the only cheese in my house till then had been blocks of cheddar, or cheese slices. I had no idea that cheese could be anything other than orange!

What were your WTF discoveries, which seem even more bizarre through the lens of time?

For all those mindblown about Centreparks' done, have a look at this place! Although you can stay outside the dome, you are basically camping on an airfield. Everything else is under the Dome, including hotel rooms and tents. It's AWESOME! www.tropical-islands.de/en/

@torquewench

I overheard a conversation in the work kitchen a few years back, the gist of which was that someone was patiently explaining to a 20 yo vacation scheme bod (or called work experience in old money) that ponies were not in fact baby horses and that cow's milk only came from female cows.
I was in a restaurant with a friend who ordered a hot chocolate. On the menu it said ‘soy and almond milk available’ but she didn’t want those so she said ‘hot chocolate, cows milk please’. The waitress looked at her in confusion and said ‘which milk?’ When my friend repeated it she said ‘we don’t have that, we have almond, soy or semi skimmed...’

There was a similar thread to this running before Christmas in which many posters (myself included) were gob smacked to discover the lovely old Moody Blues song was called Nights in White Satin and not Knights. No mention of armour clad chaps at all!

We’ve been asked several times when DD’s pony will become a horse.

Was a bit Confused what they were asking until I figured out they thought ponies were baby horses.

I always thought Timbuktu was a made up country Blush
Me too! For some reason my brain is telling me it's where Mr Men live?!! So that's why? Grin
CherryValanc · 14/02/2021 09:28

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz Roger Hargreaves wrote several Timbuktu books.

So same author and same illustrations as the Mr Men!

grey12 · 14/02/2021 09:30

I thought Churchill was american BlushGrin he just had this Al Capone style, don't know (fyi not born in the UK)

Rememberallball · 14/02/2021 09:31

@OhWhyNot

London Cheesecake (we called it a cheesecake) does not have cheese in it Shock

I never liked them anyway

Mince pies did originally contain scraps of meat and fruit 🤢 I only found this out a few days ago I can’t remember what I was watching

Probably QI - I was watching an episode the other day where they mentioned it.
ImAncient · 14/02/2021 09:35

Aaah explains it. Thanks!

Pipandmum · 14/02/2021 09:42

@longwayoff I used to go get the lunch order from the local sandwich shop and a colleague used to order apricot jam, brie and bacon sandwich (microwaved to get the brie to melt). Delish! You can sub in cream cheese for the brie but don't microwave it.

JosephineBaker · 14/02/2021 09:43

DH believed ponies were a totally separate species to horses - like zebras or donkeys.

Trying to explain they are just shorter breeds of the same species (like different dog breeds are all still dogs whether pug or Great Dane) got very heated. He was 45.

grey12 · 14/02/2021 09:44

@ImAncient

Churchill’s mother was American.
I meant like an American politician, not one from the UK government.

Can you tell I hated history in school? Hmm

MrMucker · 14/02/2021 09:44

I always thought that GM food was somehow "Grant Maintained" or subsidised by the government somehow, until DH explained the actual meaning last night when we had the most utterly delicious baked leg of salmon for dinner.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/02/2021 09:55

I thought Mauritania was in Eastern Europe.

ememem84 · 14/02/2021 10:12

I also didn’t realise that chickens feet (as in Chinese food) were actual feet. I just figured it was a translation gone a bit wrong.

Was out with clients at a yum Chinese place in london and client ordered them. Shock on my face when feet turned up!!!

@ExitChasedByABear

There are bears in Peru Blush Who knew?
I didn't know until I went to Peru that it has lovely beaches and coastal cities. It's like I never looked at a map and expected it to be all jungle and desert.
