I didn’t know a cheesecake had cheese in it!

Okay, not these days, cos I’m a sophisticated and cultured woman now, Smile but I can clearly remember being utterly astonished as a teenager to find out a cheesecake had cheese in it.

In my defence, the only cheese in my house till then had been blocks of cheddar, or cheese slices. I had no idea that cheese could be anything other than orange!

What were your WTF discoveries, which seem even more bizarre through the lens of time?

Wait Centre parcs aren't under a dome.. I thought that was the whole point!! 🤔

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 13/02/2021 11:05

That saltwater crocodiles actually exist. I thought all crocodiles were freshwater.

There is a backstory but it is long and tedious.

Lookatthemshine · 13/02/2021 11:07

I didn’t realise Oxtail soup contained ox tail until I was sent to the butchers to pick some up. Not sure what I actually thought it was!

Do you know what Soy Sauce is made from?
Yes, although I had to double check to make sure I was right.

Do you live outside London op?
I do - why?

I'm jot even sure why it's called cheese...cream cheese is more of a curd.

I love when people realise that the channel tunnel doesn’t actual go through the water Grin
@DavidsSchitt I'm scared to ask
The name kind of gives it away. Rather like CHEESEcake.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 11:12

London Cheesecake (we called it a cheesecake) does not have cheese in it Shock

I never liked them anyway

Mince pies did originally contain scraps of meat and fruit 🤢 I only found this out a few days ago I can’t remember what I was watching

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/02/2021 11:13

That the tongue sandwiches my nan used to make, we're made with an animals actual tongue

tilder · 13/02/2021 11:15

@SnowyBranches

Like many others, as often becomes evident on Mumsnet, I thought CentreParcs were constructed under a giant glass dome, woods and all, so the weather wouldn’t spoil your holiday. I thought this until I actually went there, in my late 30s. Looking back, I can’t understand how I thought this was possible in so many ways, I suppose I just didn’t give it that much thought.
I thought that too, as though it was a holiday version of the Eden Project. I couldn't work out how they could do it. Now obvs I know they don't.
passthemustard · 13/02/2021 11:15

I made a cheesecake last week. My 8yo refused to have any and she is a pudding person with a sweet tooth and I know she would have liked it so I was confused.

Now I'm thinking she thinks it's got cheddar in it 😂😂 I will tell her 😂😂

They probably were. My nan used to eat tongue. Came in slices.

What? You're winding me up! Doesn't it...?
LindaEllen · 13/02/2021 11:18

I was shocked when I found this out at the age of 14 while getting my ingredients ready as we were making one in food tech. I thought it was called cheesecake because it looked kind of like cheese when it was set. I guess it looks like cheese because it is cheese!

Cocolapew · 13/02/2021 11:18

What's London cheesecake?
I'm another who thought narwal's were mythical, my eldest DD told me they were actual creatures Blush.
And maybe the channel tunnel one...

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/02/2021 11:19

@tilder Yes, i had no idea and would happily eat them, until i realised.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 11:20

London Cheesecake or what used to be known as cheese cake is a stale tasting flaky pastry with white icing and white wormy things on. Not sure what the white wormy things are

Weedsnseeds1 · 13/02/2021 11:20

Mince pies did originally have meat. It was quite popular in medieval times to have sweet, spiced, meat products. The suet in mincemeat is a relic of its past, although its mostly vegetarian suet now.

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/02/2021 11:21

London cheesecake is a kind of pastry with icing on top and coveted in grated coconut (longer thicker strands than dessicated) I think. Bakers Oven/Greggs used to sell them.

cariadlet · 13/02/2021 11:21

I'm another one who used to think Centre Parks were under a big dome. I've a vague memory of the early adverts when they first opened. Didn't they show some kind of big glass dome?

Callingallmajortoms · 13/02/2021 11:22

Lol it was a joke there's another thread going on wether people who live in London are smarter in general than the rest of the country

cherryolives · 13/02/2021 11:22

@DavidsSchitt

Do you know what Soy Sauce is made from?
I know it's not gluten free so wheat. Soy beans? Some kind of alcohol?

and I think it's got some culture like yeast or a mold.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 11:23

A London Cheesecake I don’t remember them having jam maybe they are fancier now
