What temperature do you machine wash your clothes and other laundry at?

I used to do 30C but since Covid I've gone up to 60C and now I feel that if I were to go back to 30C my clothes wouldn't be properly clean again!

Towels and bedding go in at 80C.

Nothing so far seems to be suffering from the higher temperatures in terms of wear/tear.

I use the eco mode normally which confusingly is labelled as 40-60 degrees Confused It takes over three hours but we're in a good routine and rarely need anything faster.

Towels on at 90.

Bedding and dog blankets at 60.

SatsumasOrClementines · 11/02/2021 19:23

30 for clothes

40 or 60 for towels and bedding

I often use the quick wash too

Exactly the same. I often only do small washes though (due to lack of drying space).

I used to do everything at 30 for years but over time I felt that things just weren't getting clean enough. Now I do most things at 40 unless I am doing a wash which includes something more delicate. I just use powder, no fabric conditioner. Very occasionally pre soak in the sink in zoflora.

Except 20 for woollens and anything that says hand wash only

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 11/02/2021 20:59

30 for everything apart from 40 for particularly smelly clothes and 50-60 for towels/sheets.

jollygreenpea · 11/02/2021 22:22

40 in a 14 minuets wash for everything, very occasionally 60 in a 59 minuet wash, just powder and conditioner.

Serena1977 · 11/02/2021 22:27

60 for everything

Cheersdickie · 11/02/2021 22:28

30 for everything. And apart from socks and underwear, clothes are worn for several iterations before washing.

ChocOrange1 · 11/02/2021 22:32

Pretty much everything at 30.

Cloth nappies and towels on 40 with the occasional 60 degree wash once a month or so.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 11/02/2021 23:28

60 underwear, towels and bedding

40 clothes

BaggoMcoys · 11/02/2021 23:30

30 mins at 30 for the majority. All clothes except underwear get worn for several occasions before washing unless they get stained or smell.
60 mins at 60 occasionally - usually for bedding, towels.

These threads make me anxious about the environment!

60 for everything and then towels and sheets at 90. Love a good boiling hot wash!

Inkpaperstars · 12/02/2021 01:03

I do almost all clothes at 30 or 40, towels at 60 and bedding mostly at 60 but sometimes less. If I thought towels or bedding were really dirty, eg vomited on or something, maybe higher.

As far as your concerns re covid I don’t think there is any point in using a higher temperature for your clothes, it’s the action of the soap/detergent and water that counts in destroying and the higher temperature won’t help as far as I understand...they were asking an expert about this on the news a while ago.

I think when it comes to getting things clean one of the best tips is just not to overload the machine...give them space to come to into contact with the soap and to rinse. Annoying for me as we have a tiny machine in our rental flat, but it does help I think.

Inkpaperstars · 12/02/2021 01:04

Also, as far as is known covid doesn’t survive long on fabric anyway.

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2021 01:04

I wash all clothing at 40, and all bed linen and towels at 60.

StarlightLady · 12/02/2021 05:08

Most clothes 40. Jeans, towels and bedding 60.

There was a brilliant AMA thread a while back by someone whose job was to developer laundry detergent...very eye opening!
