What temperature do you machine wash your clothes and other laundry at?

I used to do 30C but since Covid I've gone up to 60C and now I feel that if I were to go back to 30C my clothes wouldn't be properly clean again!

Towels and bedding go in at 80C.

Nothing so far seems to be suffering from the higher temperatures in terms of wear/tear.

40 for clothing, 60 for bedding and towels.

higglepiggley · 11/02/2021 17:12

Clothes at 40
Bedding and towels at 60

badlydrawnbear · 11/02/2021 17:15

40 unless the instructions say 30. Sometimes do towels at 60. Wash my work uniforms and our fabric face coverings at 60.

Most stuff at 40. Towels and bedding at 60, bras at 30, and silk and cashmere on a cold delicates wash.

bonjourem · 11/02/2021 17:16

40 for most clothes (30 for delicates)
60 for bedding
80/90 for towels

abc31 · 11/02/2021 17:16

40 degree short wash (an hour) for most things except towels and bedding which I put on a 60 normal.

Bagelsandbrie · 11/02/2021 17:18

30 for most clothes
60 for towels and bedding
40 for dressing gowns / gardening / dirty stuff

cookiemonster5 · 11/02/2021 17:20

Lights and bedding 40 degrees
Darks at 30 degrees (my running gear was wearing too quickly at 40 and not enough to warrant their own load)
Towels at 60 degrees
Once a month machine ran at 90 degrees while empty.

LadyCounterblast · 11/02/2021 17:24

40 is my default
I do jeans/trousers and t-shirts at 30 usually (t-shirts seem to last longer)
Towels and cloths at 90
Bedding at 60
Sportswear at 50

...and bio powder for everything (except sportswear which has its own detergent)

Lemonsyellow · 11/02/2021 17:24

Mostly at 30. Towels etc on 60 - when I can remember.

TierFourTears · 11/02/2021 17:27

40 for everything except white school shirts, that go at 60 once a week (when schools are open, so not very often in the past 12 months).

VeganCow · 11/02/2021 17:29

I do 20 or 30 degree long eco wash quite a lot for things that are not really dirty. My stuff comes up perfectly clean and no different to a 40. If I feel they need a higher temp I do a 40 eco. It's a long wash but uses more water and less electric. I do have a brilliant Miele washer though

Plonque · 11/02/2021 17:29

All clothes go in at 40° unless it's something unusual.
Bedding and towels at 60°
Delicates on a silk or wool cycle or 30°

Every now and then I use a Dr Beckman cleaner at 75°/90°

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 11/02/2021 17:32

Clothes at 30 degrees, how disinfected do they need to be? You don't eat or lick your clothes and most have only been worn for a few hours.

Sheets and towels go on a hotter wash because I sleep on sheets for a week and use towels to dry off giving them more exposure to dead skin, but a T-shirt that's been on for 10 hours of me sitting at a desk not exerting myself is fine on a 30 degree wash.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/02/2021 17:33

Almost all clothes at 30.
Bedding 40
Towels 40 or 60
Cleaning cloths 90 which I use to give the machine a service.
I turn the spin down to 800 ( 400 if delicate or very dark clothes).
Everything is flexible , if things look dirty or smell of sweat I soak first.

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 17:33

40 for everything
Occasionally 60 for towels
I use fabulosa laundry stuff

I have found when I've washed stuff at 30 it doesn't smell as fresh. But perhaps we are particularly grubby! We do tend to wear things a few times before washing.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2021 18:23

On balance probably wearing once but washing at 30 vs wearing a few times and heating the water an extra 10 degrees probably works out about the sane or better so I won't worry overly about this!

LetMeStraightenMyCrownFirst · 11/02/2021 18:34

Anything that touches my skin directly - and therefore dead skin and sweat (underwear, vests, T-shirts and dresses in the summer, etc.) gets washed after each wear. Stuff that goes on top of other stuff e.g. a second t-shirt, a jumper, a skirt if I'm wearing tights, etc, gets worn a couple of times before going in the wash.

Cold wash for clothes, 30 for underwear and pjs, and 30 for bedding. Always smells fresh etc. Are you not worried about damaging your clothes with such hot washes? I also do it for the environment

GameSetMatch · 11/02/2021 19:03

Clothes 40
Bedding and towels 90

OhWhyNot · 11/02/2021 19:07

30 for clothes

40 or 60 for towels and bedding

I often use the quick wash too

Angel2702 · 11/02/2021 19:09

40 for everything unless delicate. Disinfectant added if needed.

Toorapid · 11/02/2021 19:17

My machine doesn't go up to 90, which I really should have checked before I bought it. So, for me it's 60 for towels and bedding and 40 for everything else. I keep considering 30 for clothes because we're told we should, but teen boys' armpits?
