Before I have a mental breakdown, how can I unclog my toilet?

Toilet is completely unsuable, we're isolating, no volunteers to help today and I'm having my period, so need the toilet regularly :(

Spirits of salt usually does the trick, but being incredibly careful and airing the room during and after and a good rinse down the loo after use!

abstractzebra · 11/02/2021 11:49

Washing up liquid breaks down solid matter (yuk).
Have a good squirt all round and leave it to work for a while.
Fairy Platinum is the best loo cleaner too but have a separate bottle for the bathroom!!!!

I unblocked ours ( full to brim with water and a giant poo blocking it) wearing rubber gloves. Just hoiked the blockage out.

Unpleasant but effective.

Fressia123 · 11/02/2021 12:07

It's currently sitting with some fairy liquid

First thing is check house insurance you may be covered for household emergency expenses. They will find plumber, they can go into houses in emergency. If not covered check pipework is Bath and sink on same pipework?
If you run water in sink does it go away as it should or hang around not going anwhere that will tell you if whole system blocked or just toilet.
If whole system blocked then you are likely to need plumber or drainage company if its just toilet scoop as much liquid out get rid of down plug hole and try with your curtain rail or hand in rubber glove bag up any solids you get with your period stuff and put in bin.
When it's clear flush a number of times and run bath to ensure any waste gets properly down the system.

Hopefully you're sorted by now, but lots of washing up liquid and hot (but not too hot) water - leave it for a bit and then flush

The washing up liquid dissolved the fat in the poo and makes is break up

Ok this is very gross..... but when my toilet was blocked i put a bag over my hand and well fisted the toilet hard and fast it worked

Taikoo · 11/02/2021 12:53

Oh god, I had this problem a few months ago.
Nothing, nothing, nothing, as suggested above, worked - except a deep cup plunger.
Gave the loo some welly with the plunger and it cleared the blockage.

OMG! I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my chewing gum!

I don’t think fairy liquid is going to do much. Do you really not have a plunger? Have you tried putting your hand down or using some wire? Do you not have any bleach or drain cleaner?

Fressia123 · 11/02/2021 13:02

No, I don't have a plunger I do have a brush. Brush + bleach = nothing . Fairy liquid worked a bit as it drained but it's still clogged. Next is curtain rail and last the mop.

Tooearlyforsquats · 11/02/2021 13:04

Have you not got a wire coat hanger?

Fressia123 · 11/02/2021 13:08

No I don't have a wire coat hanger I only have plastic ones.

StealthPolarBear · 11/02/2021 13:10

Have you used tge brush like a plunger, up and down really fast?

TheVolturi · 11/02/2021 13:16

If fairy liquid worked for these things then dyno rod wouldn't exist 🙄

AuntyMabelandPippin · 11/02/2021 13:17

If it's drained, try the bucket of water from a height, it usually works.

RothRoth · 11/02/2021 13:18

OP I cleared ours by cutting a length off the hosepipe and shoved that down to push the blockage away. Had to stick my hand down though to feed it round the u bend.

Fressia123 · 11/02/2021 13:27

Forgot to mention the silver lining it's definitely just the toilet as the sink is draining ok

OP posts:
Keep1984fiction · 11/02/2021 13:32

So if its just the toilet it's likely to be the u bend that's the bit where the water collects to stop smells getting back from the drains.
Best thing will be rubber gloves then a bin bag over your arm and see what you can do
Dispose of all waste in bins don't flush it down the toilet and when it's clear flush a number of times to get any bits of toilet paper and poo we'll into the outside system

SpaceRaiders · 11/02/2021 13:34

YY to the gloved hand and reaching in. Our house is ancient, it seemingly doesn’t like too much tissue paper. Doesn’t matter how often I say it, we still get a regular blockage thanks to dc 2.

finished31 · 11/02/2021 14:14

It's probably jammed tissue and you need to plunge the bastard out!

Fressia123 · 11/02/2021 14:32

Success!! Toilet is clear it flushes and it's the cleanest it's ever been!!

I have had my waste pipe freeze in a previous cold snaps, the culprit was leaves getting into the drain system from an outside tap. Hot water down the outside drain thawed it then toilet drained. I then used a stick to remove leaves and put wire mesh over the outside drain to prevent reoccurrence

Snowsnowglorioussnow · 11/02/2021 14:38

plunger.
