If you're wfh and need a lie down for a while

Would you let them know or just take the hour?

I've got loads going on atm, which work know about and have been very supportive of. A very stressful time and I'm not sleeping very well.

I've done a good mornings work, but have come over feeling really nauseous. All I want in the world is to lie down for a bit.

I manage my own workload and I doubt anyone will notice, but would you tell them?

I'm asking because I know my boss will just brush it off and tell me to take what I need, so calling seems a bit drama queen.

Can you drop your boss an email to let them know?

Hope you feel better soon.

Gliblet · 10/02/2021 15:00

Nope, wouldn't expect my staff to either. They're grown-ups, they can manage their workload, their hours and their responsibilities.

BUT - I would want to know that you're having a difficult time, talk about what we could do about your workload, see if a different pattern of hours might help etc.

SendMeHome · 10/02/2021 15:01

I'd email and let my manager know. Just something short, saying I was taking a lie down as I wasn't feeling well but work is all under control.

Mostly because I'd feel a lot more able to rest if I laid down that way, whereas if I didn't tell them, I'd be worrying that someone needed me/had noticed/whatever. And because it's 3pm, so you're not really likely to be back today, and there's' not much of it left if you finish at 5pm...

But I'll caveat this by saying that I've been self-employed forever now, so I might be alone in this!

Get well soon x

Unless you work in a job where being immediately responsive is important I would just take an hour.

SoddingWeddings · 10/02/2021 15:06

I just do it and make up the time later if nothing is time sensitive.

I have chronic migraine, so it happens once or twice a month. I try to do it at lunchtime where possible, so it's less disruption.

SummerInSun · 10/02/2021 15:11

No. If you've got nothing super urgent on and the nature of the work is that it doesn't matter whether it's done in 60 minutes time or 120 minutes time, and it's not a role that requires you to respond to everything immediately, just do it (and make the lost time up later tonight). But set an alarm so you really do wake up in an hour's time. You don't need to waste your boss's time with this.

SallyParkersMum · 10/02/2021 15:11

Nah, I'd just do it. Our response time to emails and calls is 5 working days though so it's never urgent!

LastInTheQueue · 10/02/2021 15:23

I did just that. Work load was fine, had no meetings or calls scheduled, so took myself off to bed for an hour. Set the timer and amazingly managed to sleep. Feel much better now.

I wouldn’t tell my manager because he would probably tell me to take the rest of the day off, but honestly all I needed was a good nap.

DumpedByText · 10/02/2021 15:26

I'm working from home and have been since lockdown, I often take myself off for a lie down or a walk in the fresh air for an hour.

I'm a grafter and get my work done, so don't see the harm in an hour or two here and there. WFH is tough and sometimes overwhelming so it's better to take a break than be ill.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/02/2021 15:26

I've often had a sneaky lunchtime nap!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/02/2021 15:27

It's really not their business what you do on your lunch hour. I wouldn't tell my work that I nap and sooner than I'd tell them I watch TV on my break

WorriedMillie · 10/02/2021 15:28

I love a rare lunchtime nap. I don’t feel guilty, as I work over my hours anyhow.

I'd do the same thing for the same reasons :)
IEat · 10/02/2021 16:30

I say I was feeling ill and need the afternoon off , then call in sick next day too

reluctantbrit · 10/02/2021 17:26

My working hours are the same as if we are in the office, so 9-5 and we are expected to be at the desk. We have to link our office phones to our mobiles and be available on Skype internally.

Saying that, if there is a need to be away outside normal lunch time we just say it in the running team skype chat and that's it.

I took this afternoon off as sick leave, insomnia is taking it's toll. I had it that I just took an hour and was fit again at another time though.

It depends how much you will be missed.

Metabigot · 10/02/2021 17:29

I do this all the time. Just periodically get up to wiggle the mouse.
I'm in the kind of job where so long as the work gets done they don't reaslly care

mindutopia · 10/02/2021 17:51

I would just go and lie down. Actually I do this semi-often. I also go out and exercise during the day (I mean, in normal times when I don't have dc home who can't be left unattended - though they're old enough to be unsupervised in the other room while I have a nap). I don't work set hours. If I didn't have a meeting, then I'd just make up the work in the evening.

grassisjeweled · 10/02/2021 17:56

Keep schtum

emmathedilemma · 10/02/2021 18:11

If it's a lunchtime I wouldn't, outside of "lunchtime" I would probably drop someone a message just to let them know where I am. Sometimes I don't get a break at lunchtime because things need doing so i go out for a walk in the afternoon but I usually take my mobile with me and put a message on my Teams in case anyone is looking for me. I'm lucky that I work somewhere that's flexible and treats the employees like adults!

devildeepbluesea · 10/02/2021 18:13

The other week I asked my boss if he'd mind if I knocked off early on Friday as I'd done a fair bit of extra work throughout the week and I wanted to spend some time with DD.

He said yes of course, you don't need to ask - go ahead and enjoy yourselves. Admittedly my boss is fab though.

devildeepbluesea · 10/02/2021 18:21

@JorisBohnson2 sneaky one but if you have zoom, I've realised that starting a meeting will ensure your desktop doesn't go to sleep 😉

GintyMcGinty · 10/02/2021 18:23

Just go for a lie down.

I wouldn't expect any of my staff to email me with such a request. I expect them to manage their own days.

But if you are struggling and need support then that is different and you should get in touch.

PanamaPattie · 10/02/2021 18:24

Set your Teams or whatever to "Busy" and go and have a nap.

Okokokbear · 10/02/2021 18:25

I'd just go for a lie down unless I was missing meetings then if let people know. But then I don't have the type of job where people check up on me.
