What’s the best supermarket delivery service?

BabCNesbitt · 10/02/2021 07:59

It’s that time of year where I have to renew my annual Tesco delivery pass, and like every year, I’m wondering if I might be better off switching supermarkets. Googling for comparisons just brings up information about who’s the cheapest, but what about reliability? Do Morrisons replace veggie sausages with pork ones? Does Asda regularly deliver late or leave out half the order? Are the joys of Waitrose products worth the extra £10+ a week? Has it been impossible to get a home delivery slot for your supermarket for weeks now? Inquiring minds need to know.

Ocado.
Have tried many others but am generally loyal to Ocado and that loyalty is rewarded with generally excellent service and very good quality products.

AveEldon · 10/02/2021 08:09

We use Tesco & Sainsburys - we prefer Tesco as they are more consistent. Their vans are a better design and we end up with less squashed items.
Sainsburys still do midweek afternoon delivery for free if you spend over £100
Have also tried Asda.

If you renew Tesco it may be worth using your clubcard points to pay for the delivery saver

Ginfordinner · 10/02/2021 08:12

Tesco are the most consistent where we live as well.

TESCO are reliable, but don't always bring food with a reasonable shelf life- our Christmas veg and desserts had a best before of the 24th. Luckily, we also bought some from M and S.

Moominmama5 · 10/02/2021 08:13

Asda have been fine for me but it might be luck on terms of who’s picking and packing for you.

FlyingFlamingo · 10/02/2021 08:15

Tesco for us. They have been reliable during lockdowns and provided I book in advance I have always been able to get a slot. The substitutions are generally sensible and they’ll refund for any issues with no quibbles. I was very impressed that during the first lockdown they refunded my delivery saver automatically.

Don’t get me started on Ocado, I’ll never use them again, they were awful.

wellthatsunusual · 10/02/2021 08:15

Tesco are by far the best for me. Rarely any substitutions, everything well inside its use by date, always arrives at the right time. Asda and Sainsbury's are very poor in comparison, loads of substitutions, unavoidable products and short dates.

LouisLitt · 10/02/2021 08:15

I don’t think you’ll get a pass anywhere else now, I tried Asda the other day and couldn’t. But if you mean just more generally I have found Asda to have the best expiry dates and if something is wrong eg poor quality or missing you can just self serve and request a refund through your account instead of having to call up.

wellthatsunusual · 10/02/2021 08:15

Unavailable products !

m0therofdragons · 10/02/2021 08:16

Whichever you can get a slot with. I’ve not managed to get a tesco delivery here since March but next week my shop is booked with tesco. Asda has been reliable until this week, Waitrose impossible to get anything. I can’t fault asda although last week it came from a shop 45 minutes when asda is walking distance.

Peakedin1997 · 10/02/2021 08:18

Tesco are best but I haven't been able to get a slot for the entire pandemic. We usually end up with Morrisons instead, ocado for a treat. Tried sainsburys and asda and they were both awful.

User7458 · 10/02/2021 08:21

I have tried them all and stick with Tesco as they have been reliable and I have been able to get a delivery slot all through this last year and I use my Clubcard points to get free delivery. Never had anything to complain about

Waitrose is ok for the odd delivery but you cannot buy a pass for it so hard to get a slot

Ocado delivery is overpriced they were charging £9.99 for Christmas delivery and had a minimum £90 basket, lots of things out of stock and charge for more expensive substitutes. Smart pass also expensive.

Asda is shit and overcharged me £60 which took ages to return

Sainsbury's was ok but didn't really have what I wanted

FiveShelties · 10/02/2021 08:22

Definitely Tesco, I have been ordering shopping for my Mum over the last 4 years and they have been brilliant. The drivers have always been really helpful and I could not praise them enough.

User7458 · 10/02/2021 08:24

I would stay with Tesco OP and use your Clubcard points to renew your delivery. You can always try others in between

Pyewhacket · 10/02/2021 08:28

Impossible to get a delivery slot with any of them where I live. Given up trying.

ZenNudist · 10/02/2021 08:29

I'm interested in this. Just started online shopping with Waitrose for a change and Sainsbury's for my usual products. I've found them both ok. You cant seem to get decent broccoli with either.

Icantfindanewname · 10/02/2021 08:33

Ocado for me. Only one week since last March that I haven't been able to get a delivery. Always on time.

Tesco squish too much, asda deliver mouldy fruit, sainsbury are obnoxious, Morrisons too many substitutions and I can't get a waitrose delivery EVER Angry

Dementedswan · 10/02/2021 08:34

Morrisons have been fine for me. Sensible subs when needed and never been late. There was one occasion I was missing a couple of items, but I was refunded within a few hours of emailing them.

Thesearmsofmine · 10/02/2021 08:35

I would go with Tesco. Asda are hit and miss and I can never get a slot with Morrison’s.
I like Sainsbury’s products but I dislike their online shopping because any subs you pay the full price for and get refunded the difference via a voucher instead of just paying the price for the item you ordered. Also they don’t make it simple to request a refund for a missing item and again instead of getting a refund for it you just get a voucher on your account.
I like Ocado but find it too expensive to use every week.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/02/2021 08:38

I use Sainsbury's and other than the odd squashed items and a weird way of substituting which benefits their price promise (which isn't relevant that often), I'm more than happy with them. I have the £30 midweek pass and it's fine. If I want a delivery outside of those days, I get a £1 4 hour slot.

User7458 · 10/02/2021 08:39

Waitrose is good and free delivery over £40 but slot availability seem to depend on the store, ours generally has some slots but it is one of the very large stores, I tend to visit the store now and not hog a slot for a top up shop and have Tesco deliver my main shop, then I can get more variety of shopping, Tesco is about 5 miles from me so not somewhere I would go to store, others are much nearer

StCharlotte · 10/02/2021 08:43

I normally go with Sainsbury's but haven't been able to get a slot since last March.

I can at last get Tesco slots which I book weeks in advance and have a reminder every week to book the next slot. Helpfully I'm WFH so can get a delivery any time of day and I go for the four hour slots which seem more available.

Can I just say that given the pressure they're under, all the delivery people are incredible. So cheerful and helpful. Hats off to them Smile

Ostryga · 10/02/2021 08:44

I’d stick with Tesco tbh, they’ve never let me down. Although I do still have the hump with Ocado for totally screwing me over for a year even though I used to spend min £150 a week with them.

Babdoc · 10/02/2021 08:50

Sainsbury’s email you in advance if any of your items are out of stock, and offer a substitute which you can accept or refuse, or you can specify a different substitute.
Any substitutes that are more expensive are credited to your account, so you deduct the difference from your next shop. It’s a good system, as you never get an unsuitable sub.
My only quibble is that due to the snow yesterday my delivery was cancelled and they didn’t tell me until two hours after it was due to have arrived. They airily suggested I should drive to the store and collect it.
I pointed out that if their driver couldn’t get through 15 miles of blizzards in a truck, how the f**k did they think I could in a car!

PopsicleHustler · 10/02/2021 08:50

We shop twice a week with Asda.

Usually a good service and reliable. Sometimes slightly late. Insure if they apologise for being late though as my teenage son usually goes to the door to bring it all in for me. Sometimes they do give random substitutes that make no sense. Ie they sent us baby wipes to replace toilet roll. And we order halal meat as we are Muslim family. And they substitute us pork if Shazans halal meat is unavailable, and have done so more than once. I just shake my head and request a refund.
