Do stars get paid for going in chat shows like Graham Norton

Just been wondering how much stars would get paid for chat shows and if there is a sliding scale related to the shows popularity?

Do they get paid less for a zoom interview or if it is on the radio. Then I wondered if they went on for free if they had a book/film etc to publicise? If it’s a BBC employee on a BBC show do they get paid extra?

Lockdown really gives too much time to think but I am intrigued if it’s a nice little earner for Tom Cruise to do a stint with Graham!

I presume they go on to plug their latest film/book/ music. So it's publicity mostly.

ArosGartref · 09/02/2021 19:04

I don't think they get paid but it's transactional. Actors usually obligated to do interviews as part of their contacts. Although I'm sure Tom Cruise has more autonomy that most.

It looks like one of the better chat shows to be on, I think.

Itstheprinciple · 09/02/2021 19:05

I kind of assumed it was already paid to them as part of the contract they signed for whatever movie/tv/music deal they had signed e.g. you get so much for publicity for this project. No idea why I thought that!

Sort of linked... I know someone who works in radio. When Capital did their tv ads with people like Rihanna on a few years back they didn’t pay the stars. They asked them to appear on the tv ad and said that they wouldn’t play them on the radio if they didn’t appear. Royalties and cash per play meant that every star they asked agreed to do the tv ad for free,

lljkk · 09/02/2021 19:12

Happy to be corrected, but I think this is about right...
Not normally paid. Not for chatting and schmoozing.
Nor are scientists or politicians normally paid to go on radio/TV.

TV Performances: the artists usually are paid, say Jools Holland plays with a band twice for 3 minutes or someone does a dance routine or a comedy sketch - they usually get paid.

Little radio shows (like Loose Ends or Radio 6) the performers might ask for travel costs to be covered but not a performance fee, most typically they want the publicity more than anything. The Presenters are paid, of course.

Not usually. It's promo but prob get a car from hotel to studio and back. Some e.g. a film star will be on a promo tour and maybe part of the contract. So e.g. Jennifer Aniston gets $$$ for a film but maybe has to do x amount of promo work in NY, LA, London, Paris. But 1st class all the way. Like Notting Hill character @The Ritz

LucasLeesEyebrows · 09/02/2021 19:16

I always presumed press junkets and chat shows were part of the actor’s contract with the studio and not paid appearances as such.

SandlakeRd · 09/02/2021 19:25

Does all that apply to the random “celebs” that appear on stuff like Saturday kitchen and programmes like that? I guess even if they don’t get an overall publicity budget the extra sales of whatever would make up for it.

Interesting about Capital and Rihanna - it’s a cut throat world isn’t it!

Also as a PP said if I was a celeb I would enjoy Graham Norton. I always said I would want to go on Richard and Judy back in the daySmile
I assume stars may make requests if they like the show!

I always wonder how much comedians are paid to appear on say 8 out of 10 cats etc. Even more curious how much the Escape to the Chateau couple are paid. Just nosey, I'm sure A listers are on chat shows to promote.

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:33

No one gets paid for being interviewed on a chat show or on Saturday kitchen -they do them when they have something to promote. It's usually written into their contract if they're in a film or TV show (ie you will appear on x shows). It's also quite political - you can't do certain shows if you're on certain others, you have to negotiate to get the best air dates for whatever you're promoting (eg you want a December air if you're promoting a Christmas show/DVD for sales etc). Obviously the bigger the celeb, the greater priority they are given.

They do get paid to appear on panel shows such as 8 out of 10 cats. How much depends on the profile of the comedian/celeb...

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:36

They may not get a huge amount for these shows, though. Again a lot of it is about profile building.

SandlakeRd · 09/02/2021 19:37

Oh sleepthief - your husband could do a AMA!

OP posts:
Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:38

@SandlakeRd yes, which shows they appear on is negotiable and some shows have a better rep/profile than others

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:38

@SandlakeRd if he wasn't such a technological klutz who's terrified of social media 🤣

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:39

He does tell me A LOT about his work though 🤪

SandlakeRd · 09/02/2021 19:39

I am intrigued by it all the background stuff for TV programmes. Ok home make over shows like Phil and Kirsty do they contribute to the work? Does being on Grand Designs pay for the bespoke German stair case? So many questions!

OP posts:
SandlakeRd · 09/02/2021 19:41

@Sleepthief - he could spill the beans as to which shows no one wants to go on! Or which stars no one wants back on their show!

OP posts:
Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:43

He certainly could 😳

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 19:45

I don't think people do get paid to be on hone makeover shows or suchlike - beyond expenses for the escape to the country types. Oh, and good old changing rooms when the production company had to pay to put the room back the way it was or compensate contestants for a broken lifetime's collection of teapots!

I suppose they would need back ups wouldn’t they. Wonder who is on call this weekend ha ha

I think they would get a appearance fee. I was once an “expert guest” on Woman’s Hour and was paid.

Gingersnaphappy · 09/02/2021 20:02

I know they get a goody bag because there's a You Tube video somewhere of Bill Bailey joking with Stephen Fry about them.
