Do stars get paid for going in chat shows like Graham Norton

Just been wondering how much stars would get paid for chat shows and if there is a sliding scale related to the shows popularity?

Do they get paid less for a zoom interview or if it is on the radio. Then I wondered if they went on for free if they had a book/film etc to publicise? If it’s a BBC employee on a BBC show do they get paid extra?

Lockdown really gives too much time to think but I am intrigued if it’s a nice little earner for Tom Cruise to do a stint with Graham!

Thank you Sleepthief, the gossip you must hear (green with envy) Grin.

islockdownoveryet · 09/02/2021 20:58

I think it’d be a appearance fee with expenses although it’s mostly on zoom now .
I assumed most are contractually obliged to promote the latest film/ tv show book etc .

What about shows where some are talking guests and then there is the one who talks AND performs their latest song at the end? I would think their agent would want them to be paid for performing? Yay or nay.

I would think nay, that's still them promoting their own content at the end of the day.

What interests me is I once read that Graham Norton will bring on comedians if a celeb has a reputation for being difficult - just to lighten the atmosphere a bit and make everything more watchable.

I want to know if:
A) that's true
B) are they paid?

DaisyDreaming · 09/02/2021 21:10

I remember watching something like I’m a celeb and one celeb saying that things like this morning don’t pay and the other saying they do if your agent does their job!

RedWhineandgo · 09/02/2021 21:19

Oh please can your husband do an AMA @Sleepthief

We could ask questions and then you type his answers?

That would take care of my lockdown blues nicely.

BlindTipsy · 09/02/2021 21:20

Completely off topic but I always thought as a child that celebs on game shows only got paid (or got paid more) if they won. Used to feel so sorry for the losers and wondered how they took it so well

TheMoth · 09/02/2021 21:25

You can tell the ones with the good agents too- they're EVERYWHERE.

And yes, if they're plugging. Foo Fighters have music out at the minute, so Grohl is doing the rounds. But he's very sweet, so that's OK. I have to remind myself that no, he's not one of blokes I hung out with jn my rock club youth.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 09/02/2021 21:29

@LouLou789

I think they would get a appearance fee. I was once an “expert guest” on Woman’s Hour and was paid.
How much did you get paid out of interest? I’ve done a lot of ‘expert guest’ stuff and never been any money changing hands, but I’m a spokesperson for an organisation rather than independent, and it’s in our interests to have the publicity.
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/02/2021 21:34

We always talk about this subject and The Chase. Do the chasers get more money if they beat the team/less if they don’t?

Pedallleur · 09/02/2021 21:34

Certain guests prob a nightmare, remember Meg Ryan whereas others like e.g. Kate Price would prob go to the opening of an envelope. An actor like Tom Cruise who may have a stake in a film will be able to carry a lot of clout and is a star guest anyway.

boredwiththeoldname · 09/02/2021 21:44

I used to work for an accountancy firm that had a lot of celeb customers.

It was quite an eye-opener, that job.

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 21:51

@SionnachRua I think that is true. There is an order of where they sit on the sofa (from the Hollywood A-listers to the comedian on the end) and the comedians are there to lighten the conversation. You do get some funny/unexpected rapports between guests too, on the flipside.

Mr Sleepthief is not particularly involved in the music side of things, so I don't know if the performers get a fee, but in principle it is probably part of the PR side of their deals with the record companies, just like the actors/tv perosonalities/writers etc.

@RedWhineandgo I'd love to chase away someone's lockdown blues - I'll try to soften DH up and hopefully a Saturday night glass of wine will work its magic.

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 21:52

What I can tell you is that according to everyone Graham Norton is absolutely lovely, in whatever he does! And not just to the celebs. One of life's good guys.

The Chasers get a set fee per episode. I only know that because there was an interview when there was a new chaser and they discussed the other chasers being annoyed as an extra Chaser effectively cuts their salary as less episodes means less pay.

On this point, I concur with my limited experience.

I was at a garden fete in West Cork (close to where Graham Norton is originally from) a few years ago. He was there with some elderly female relatives, at least one was an aunt as I heard him say it.

He was sitting with them at a table on the lawn, and just really nice & relaxed with them, very 'normal' I guess. People were coming up to him, but not excessively, some clearly knew him / his family. He was v pleasant, in a low-key way.

There was quite a bit of 'ooh look it's Graham Norton' & whispering going on, which I imagine must be a tad irritating but he paid no attention, and yes, just seemed normal, fetching the aunties cups of tea & cake etc.

Sleepthief · 09/02/2021 22:06

@EarringsandLipstick DH has met him on numerous occasions over the years in various different capacities and says he is never anything other than lovely.

jambeforeclottedcream · 09/02/2021 22:40

@LucasLeesEyebrows

I always presumed press junkets and chat shows were part of the actor’s contract with the studio and not paid appearances as such.
This is exactly what I thought too SmileSmile
Thedogisdrivingmemad · 09/02/2021 23:47

Met Graham Norton in a personal capacity a couple of times at parties - he radiates warmth and seemed lovely.

user1464279374 · 10/02/2021 00:01

I don't know about Graham Norton specifically but normally if it's publicity it's not paid. I've had actors from films I've made go on things like The One Show or be interviewed in newspapers/podcasts etc and that's not paid. If someone is giving expertise on a panel for instance, that is normally paid,

SleepingStandingUp · 10/02/2021 00:18

It's clear from the quality of guests that Norton is better rated than Ross. We watch both but prefer Norton.

Whenever I film the kids singing it dancing I'm like "I'm keeping it for when you're on GN" but he'll be ancient by the time they're Rick and famous!

I like to hear this. He seems so nice on the show and seems to really create a rapport with the guests.

SandlakeRd · 10/02/2021 07:49

I’m glad GN is lovely. That would really have shattered my illusions if he was nasty when the cameras turned off.

I’m surprised you don’t get anything for going on home improvement shows (tea pots aside!). So on love it or list it the people will pay for all the works etc and then still have to pay moving costs if they decide to list it? Do they do it just for their 5 mins of fame and Kirsty and Phil’s “expertise”?

I can’t watch American Chat Shows. All that forced bon ami makes me cringe I read an article by Bear Gryls and he said it was the most dissagreeable things he ever had to endure.

AlwaysLatte · 10/02/2021 08:26

The stars always have a big film/book/event to plug on the Graham Norton show. And I expect they get paid well, too.
