Anyone familiar with Quinton and Halesowen?

Possible job move to Birmingham and we're looking at these areas. Schools not a factor any more. Would like to live in Harborne but too expensive. Proximity to motorway is attractive as lots of travelling to Manchester.

Any views on Quinton and Halesowen or anywhere else nearby?

Both have very nice parts and some not so nice parts so you get a range of house prices.

I don't like Halesowen town centre, it seems quite rough but I only use it for the Argos.

Quinton on the edge of Harborne could be nice. Harborne high street has some fairly nice restaurants and bars.

CornedBeef451 · 08/02/2021 22:53

Stourbridge is good for the train to Birmingham and a nicer area but further to the motorway.

bonfireheart · 08/02/2021 22:55

Where are the jobs in Birmingham? I would if possible right now drive around the areas and see where the houses you like are. I find Quinton a bit 'soulless', I don't know how else to describe it!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 08/02/2021 22:58

Have a look around Bourneville. I lived there for a bit when I was doing my training. Some gorgeous properties, transport links are good and Cadbury World. Grin

bonfireheart · 08/02/2021 23:00

Bournville is lovely, and smells like chocolate:)

campion · 08/02/2021 23:08

If Harborne's too pricey then Bournville will be too. Nice though. Depends what you want really as there are some less pricey properties in Harborne.
I second the idea of a drive around and, yes, Quinton wouldn't grab me.

SteveHarringtonsHair · 08/02/2021 23:17

Halesowen has got some lovely housing areas and is close to the beautiful Clent hills, Lickey Hills and Waseley hills so plenty of nice places to walk.
J3 for the M5 is easily accessible from most of Halesowen.
The town centre isn’t as nice as it used to be but it hasn’t had an Argos for about two years so I’d probably discount the previous posters views on the town.
There is a leisure centre which is due for a refurb soon and the town itself is going through a process of regeneration by way of the Halesowen bids involvement.

BackforGood · 08/02/2021 23:19

I don't know Halesowen so well. Though there are some parts that are rather nice, overlooking the Clent Hills.

I'm inclined to agree with other posters about Quinton. It's not a bad area, but it is a bit meh. It doesn't have a town centre / High Street, its just an area next to Harborne, on the way out to the motorway really.

If you want to share what sort of budget you would have and how big a property you might be looking for, we can suggest areas ?

Is the job in the City Centre ?

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 08/02/2021 23:20

Harborne isn't as nice as it should be for the money they ask for round there.

Apart from convenient for the motorway, what are you looking for? Somewhere pretty, or with good shops/eating?

CornedBeef451 · 08/02/2021 23:20

I found a nearer Argos in Amblecote Sainsbury's so it has been a while. Does Halesowen still have the two story Asda? For some reason I found that oddly exciting.

CornedBeef451 · 08/02/2021 23:22

I'm always amazed at house prices in Harborne. Mid terrace, no parking, extortionate!

muffinheaven · 08/02/2021 23:22

I know both areas well and have lived in Halesowen all my life and bought up my family here. I would pick Halesowen over Quinton personally but there are good and bad areas in both. Whereabouts in Birmingham would you be working and would you be using public transport ?

Shelfdust · 08/02/2021 23:50

Job is near the city centre but won't need to go in every day.

Using public transport is a possibility.

Budget about 400k and ideally would like 4 bedrooms.

I would like a community feel.... from what I know about Halesowen, families have been there for generations. Just an impression.

That's a decent budget for Birmingham. Add others have suggested, Bourneville is nice with good transport links and there's definitely a community feel to it. There are also other small towns surrounding Birmingham; Redditch, Solihull, Bromsgrove, etc.

KingsHeathen · 09/02/2021 01:23

Bournville has very few four beds, and they are rather north of 400k usually.

I would choose Halesowen over Quinton if I could only choose between those two.

BluePeterVag · 09/02/2021 03:38

Try Hagley. Very sought after schools, community feel, nice shops. Train station and good transport links. It is further out but you won’t go wrong choosing this location.

muffinheaven · 09/02/2021 17:54

Hagley is nice but I think you'd struggle to get 4 bedrooms for your budget. I would look at the Lapal side of Halesowen which is close to Quinton or the Lutley side which is closer to Clent and Hagley. I agree about families staying for a long time in Halesowen, when my children started school about a third of the parents were people I'd been to school with ! I would say Lapal side has better access to buses, you're on the main route into Birmingham and the bus comes about every 10 mins at peak times.

doctorhamster · 09/02/2021 17:58

You won't get a 4 bed in Bournville for 400k, not unless you can find one that needs work.

I don't know Quinton or Halesowen but have a look at Kings Norton or Kings Heath.

Shelfdust · 09/02/2021 18:33

I love the look of the Lapal area and I've been hearing today about the glorious number 9 bus!

I think Hagley is out for the same reason as Harborne.

I'm reluctant to go further into the city (Bourneville, Kings Norton) because it's further to get to the M5.

CuddlyDudley71 · 09/02/2021 20:07

Bearwood could be a good shout.
Quinton has no centre and Halesowen is souless and creepy.
Mosely has good shops and pubs.

OliverBabish · 09/02/2021 20:12

Bromsgrove?

BackforGood · 09/02/2021 20:28

I was going to suggest Bromsgrove or somewhere like Catshill (in between M5 Jnctn4, and Brosmgrove)

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/02/2021 20:28

Wouldn't you be best to consider the north side of Birmingham if you're travelling to Manchester a lot? Boldmere in Sutton Coldfield definitely has a village feel and you could just about get 4 bedrooms for £400k. Sutton Park is on the doorstep as well as Sutton Coldfield itself. It has brilliant public transport links too.

Ditto this, Im in Streetly which has a lovely community feel, not too far out of the city yet is close to parks and farmland plus buses into Brum, pretty sure 400 would get you 4 beds at the moment
