Films / TV shows that scared you as a child

Is it me or are things aimed at 'kids' actually quite disturbing... I mean seriously, there were some things that kept me up at night or made me feel physically sick.

I was a 90s kid and a few things stick in my mind...

The oriental night fish. If you know, you know. Who on Earth thought it was a good idea to put this on a children's video after Rupert bear and the frogs???

The Prince of Egypt. The scene where the babies are thrown to the crocodiles. I saw this when I was about 8 and it made me feel nauseous. To this day, I would never watch it again.

Courage the Cowardly Dog. 'Return the slab'...

So any stick in your mind? I'm sure more will come to me...

Worzel Gummidge gave me nightmares - so creepy.
The Daleks in Dr Who
And anyone remember the “Singing, Ringing Tree”? That was totally frightening, especially the bear.

CourageCamille · 07/02/2021 19:37

Chorlton and the Wheelies- shudder!

There was a Beetlejuice cartoon when I was a kid. Who thought that was appropriate?!

IAmJackieWeaver · 07/02/2021 19:41

Armchair Thriller, around 1978?

Terrifying

HeartShapedBox · 07/02/2021 19:41

I opened a xmas present when I was 4 to find a video of the great mouse detective and I was terrified. I kicked off and my mum told me off and put it on. I screamed and cried and hid throughout and didn't dare to watch it again until I was about 9 😂

HermitsLife · 07/02/2021 19:44

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
I had nightmares for years after that

doadeer · 07/02/2021 19:44

Witches - still does and I'm 31. Cannot watch it.

My mum took me to see The Mummy and I was so terrified at the person being buried alive I burst into tears and we had to leave the cinema. Must have been 10/11 ish.

Peasbewithyou · 07/02/2021 19:46

I saw ET when I was about 6. Had nightmares for years.

sonys · 07/02/2021 19:48

Ooh I’ve got one from the 80’s. Does anyone remember a scandi mini series called Maelstrom? It involved an island in a lake, a creaky rocking chair and dolls with melting faces!! My husband is about the only other person I know that remembers it.

Bellevu · 07/02/2021 19:49

The Demon Headmaster

DinosaurDiana · 07/02/2021 19:50

I've not seen that @sonys but you've reminded me of the first time I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Nazis faces melted off!

I was not ready for that

TimeIhadaNameChange · 07/02/2021 19:56

Moondial used to freak me out with the spinning sundial.

timtam23 · 07/02/2021 20:01

The Daleks in Dr Who. I remember hiding behind the soda and crying. There was also a Dr Who episode which had a kind of invading slime, and another one with huge maggots or grubs, all of these scared me terribly.
My youngest child was scared of Spooky Spoon and the Number Taker from Numberjacks

timtam23 · 07/02/2021 20:01

*sofa

Ginblooded · 07/02/2021 20:02

The riddlers used to scare the shit out of me when I was little!

LibertyLue · 07/02/2021 20:04

Agree with Tales of the Unexpected. The theme tune and the dancing woman would see me leave the room.

KeeOe · 07/02/2021 20:08

@sonys Maelstrom, oh, my word yes! I think it was on after 'Howard's Way' on a Sunday evening. I'd love to watch it again as an adult and see if its as terrifying as I remember.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/02/2021 20:09

And anyone remember the “Singing, Ringing Tree”? That was totally frightening, especially the bear.

God yes, Das Singende Klingende Baumchen (extra scarey because we could only watch it in German, so extra layers of confusion). And yes, the bear was terrifying even though (I think) he was really the handsome prince, and the dwarf was the bad one.

HarrietSchulenberg · 07/02/2021 20:11

Worzel Gummidge - hated him but my parents thought he was hilarious so we had to watch it.

The Cybermen in Dr Who, and the 70s episode where there were robot copies of humans. Can't remember what they were called but they gave me nightmares.

Jim'll Fix It. I loved the "dreams coming true" bit but was terrified of Jimmy Saville - all that rattly jewellery and his horrible, ugly face.

My dad once phoned SwapShop for me as we had the answer to a competition to win something related to Abba and I screamed the house down because I thought he was going to make me speak with Noel Edmunds on live TV. Mind you, he had the same effect when he told me the Bay City Rollers were coming for tea, and rang the doorbell at 4pm. I was quite a gullible child.

AgentCooper · 07/02/2021 20:14

I’m a 90s kid too and there was a particular episode of Round the Twist where a guy was becoming a merman and growing scales all over his body that terrified me 😱 also some crappy Baywatch spin-off called Baywatch Nights.

But The Witches, my God. The Grand High Witch with her mask off and the wee girl trapped in the painting.

Bloodhoundgang · 07/02/2021 20:18

Secretly watched Hitchcock'sThe Birds with my not much older brother when we were very young primary school kids. Petrified of birds to this day. Couldn't even tell my parents where that fear stemmed from until about 30 years later🤣
