Please can you suggest a book that made you laugh out loud. I need more laughter in my life right now, and I am bored of streaming TV/film Shock

Anything by David Sedaris . Reread Adrian Mole series

Sniv · 06/02/2021 23:01

Following with interest! It's been a while since a book made me laugh out loud.

I almost bought 'The Tent, The Bucket & Me' a while back, but decided not to after hearing it contained a really horrible incident where a young child is sexually assaulted. Surprised to see it recommended on here if that's the case?

Nina Stibbe- Dear Nina.

Based on her time as a nanny in London in the 80s. It's hilarious. Also she has a novel where she gets a job at a dentist, also v funny.

Diplomatic Baggage by Brigid Keenan. I’ve read all the Bill Bryson’s and I think this may be even funnier.
I find that disc world is polarising. If you get it and love it, it’s brilliant. If it doesn’t grab you, it just doesn’t work.

crossstitchingnana · 06/02/2021 23:07

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In fact any Douglas Adams.

BackforGood · 06/02/2021 23:07

Another vote for The Tent, The Bucket and Me
Hilarious.
I've had to replace it twice as I've lent it out and not got it back.
My (young adult) dc found it funny too and they are obviously from another era.

Clawdy · 06/02/2021 23:08

Diary of a Nobody by George Grossmith. Can't believe something written all those years ago is so hilarious. Charles Pooter is a Victorian David Brent!

Puffinhead · 06/02/2021 23:19

@ChrissyPlummer

Most of P G Wodehouse, particularly the ‘Blandings’ and ‘Jeeves’ books.
Definitely Jeeves and Wooster.

Huckleberry Finn.

Tom Sharpe books - Wilt etc.

@IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere

Mapp and Lucia is hilarious. Brilliantly funny.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/02/2021 23:24

The first book I thought of was Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson I made a complete dick of myself on a plane with a colleague reading that, I laughed hysterically and even putting it down didn't help 😁

Krazynights34 · 06/02/2021 23:31

My favourite laugh out loud book probably isn’t one that many would find as funny as it is:
The First Bad Man by Miranda July.
I cried with laughter on the train at so much of it.
It’s fantastic

friendlyflicka · 06/02/2021 23:31

All of Rupert Everett

UserEleventyNine · 06/02/2021 23:39

I second the chronicles of St Mary by jodi Taylor

And I third it. I've read them all many times now and still laugh out loud. The short story 'Roman Holiday' especially.

There are some sad bits too, though.

MonkeyGoneToHeaven · 06/02/2021 23:43

Another vote for Are You Experienced by William Sutcliffe. I thought of it straight away when I read the thread title and the first post recommended it - in fact I’m going to go and find it on the bookshelf and read it again, I could do with cheering up.

KeflavikAirport · 07/02/2021 07:30

Three men in a boat, Diary of a nobody, and 1066 and all that.

stilllovingmysleep · 07/02/2021 07:32

@YouAintKingDingALing

Many of Bill Brysons earlier books. I had to stop reading them on the Tube as I laughed so much. I must've looked a little crazy!
@YouAintKingDingALing yes!!! Eg Notes from a small island. Hilarious
Magicbabywaves · 07/02/2021 07:32

I’m reading a Bill Bryson at the moment and I can confirm I have been laughing.

Also Three Men in a Boat and Diary of a Nobody.

stilllovingmysleep · 07/02/2021 07:33

@Otterseatpuffinsdontthey

Adam Kay " This is going to hurt".
@Otterseatpuffinsdontthey and his second small book on the NHS at Christmas is laugh out loud funny
stilllovingmysleep · 07/02/2021 07:34

I love any David Sedaris. People probably think I'm crazy when I do my walks with headphones on and listen to him on audio. He just cracks me up.

Dowser · 07/02/2021 07:40

@IamEarthymama

Terry Pratchett, my wife always knows when I am reading Discworld as I keep giggling

Three Men in a Boat, Jerome K Jerome

Wodehouse Blandings Castle etc

Lilian Beckwith's books set on a Scottish island. I remember reading them in my teens and being vastly amused

I was just about to mention Lilian beckwith so am amazed someone got there before me The hills is lonely Was the first one I read I want to read it again There were about four or five of them I must’ve read them about 4 decades ago

I loved the vet books , james Herriot it shouldn’t happen to a vet. All creatures great and small etc

Dowser · 07/02/2021 07:41

Paul o gradys biographies are very good

Dowser · 07/02/2021 07:46

@dementedma

Yes to Bill Bryson and Janet Evanovich ( Stephanie Plum series) Also Gerald Durrell "My family and other animals" and the sequel "Birds,Beasts and Relatives"

FourDaysOfChicken · 07/02/2021 07:49

Another vote for early Bill Bryson

EmmanuelleMakro · 07/02/2021 07:50

Be careful where you read Bill Bryson. I fell in the gap between train snd platform at Clapham Junction as was reading it as I got on the train and laughing out loud...
