Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

@BorderlineHappy are you able to embrace it and have a nap? Or do you need to keep going?

73kittycat73 · 30/05/2021 20:04

I spoke to soon...been to the loo a lot. Sorry way TMI!!! Blush
I'm sorry to hear you got burnt. Ouch. Do you have anything in for it? I got away with it today as only went in the garden for a while. The sun kept going in and it was a bit breezy so we came in.

I've put some body butter on it. It's not sore just hot and very red oh it was boiling here. We're going to the beach tomorrow but will go really early and be home for lunch before it gets too hot.

Sorry you're feeling unwell again.

73kittycat73 · 31/05/2021 10:53

Thanks. Ok so far today...I really hope you had a lovely time at the beach. :) It is quite sunny and warm so far here today. I haven't been outside yet though. It's really nice to see some sun for a change! Grin

Went in the garden all day. Had an ice cream from the van. Grin First one I've had in over a year though. Got quite a 'tanned' arm. Grin It's a little red but not too bad really. Must buy some more sun block.
Hope you all enjoyed the sun?

Wow, doesn't the sun make a difference. DH and I went to Devon to visit a friend who has been quite poorly for a couple of years. We had a lovely time - took him out and knackered him in the sun, poor chap. Anyway, got back yesterday and was totally zonked. So went to bed at like 8.30 and slept though. OMG I feel amazing this morning! What a gift sleep is!

BorderlineHappy · 01/06/2021 10:29

We had a gorgeous weekend as well.
Went for a lovely walk this morning up by the canal.
Beautiful weather, hope we get a few more days at least.

73kittycat73 · 01/06/2021 10:50

Wow, that beach looks beautiful. I'm glad you all had a lovely day. Smile
What did you watch at the cinema?
Hope your friend feels better soon, and yes, a good nights sleep makes the world of difference!
Canal walk sounds nice. We're supposed to get up to 27 today! Still, as long as it's sunny. I used to be a real winter lover (Still do love it really.) but have been craving the sunshine this year. Glad to get some at last! Grin

Anyone any nice drinks for the summer that's not coke.
I want to get a few drinks in that's a bit different.

73kittycat73 · 01/06/2021 12:34

I drink Sainsburys' flavoured fizzy water. The Blackcurrent and cherry. They also do lemon and lime, Strawberry and kiwi. For sepcial occasions, as I don't drink alcohol, I drink Schlor (Spl?)
