Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Yeah I'm a bit annoyed. He's fine with me going weekday mornings but that means I have to get up at 5:20 and it's taking it's toll a bit.

BorderlineHappy · 24/05/2021 19:17

Back from the Dr,she's delighted with my progress.
Booked my vaccine for Thursday so I'm feeling really happy with the way things are going.

Hello everyone. I went to yoga today. When I first got there I just wanted to run home. But I stayed and managed to ride it out. I made a right spectacle of myself though. Grin We were in a big hall, all spaced out, instructor at the front. About two thirds in I went to have a sneaky drink from my bottle. Bottle didn't co-operate. I opened the lid and it made this huge POP noise! Blush Everyone turned but luckily they laughed. Then on the way out the hand sanitizer splatted all up my top. Blush lol Apart from that, there was no drama! lol I did enjoy it a lot and am looking forward to going back. Smile
Does anybody else find their diabetes affects their balance? I have shocking balance and have heard it could be connected to the diabetes?

At least you didn't end up farting. Apparently that's really common in yoga. I have poor balance but it's from my other issue so can't help there but really well done for going and staying, I can imagine how difficult it was and how much you would have wanted to just turn around and go back to your safe place

PaperMonster · 24/05/2021 20:49

Haha @WreckTangled, I immediately thought we were going to get a fart story! I’ve been advised against yoga because of my hyper mobility. Not sure why really! Although it’d be miles to a class from here. Also, yes 5.20am - just couldn’t face that. 6.30 is the absolute earliest I can manage! I am a very tired person though, always have been.

Good to hear you’re in the doctor’s good books @BorderlineHappy! Sounds like you’re doing well!

73kittycat73 · 24/05/2021 22:30

Thank you WreckTangled . Smile I was a bit worried about bottom situations but luckily nothing escaped. Grin ( I was worried because I read this thread. Warning, very funny thread. Smile )

I don't mind getting up early too much, I go to bed early though. I've always been a very tired person too chronic illnesses do that to you I suppose. Dh is used to me going to bed at 8:30 some nights! I'm better in the mornings than evenings though, easier in the summer too. The cuckoo would out this morning.

travailtotravel · 25/05/2021 12:40

I fart in yoga and pilates. I just try and style it out and own it if I have to. Sooo embarrassing though.

Nurse today for an annual check even though I only had bloods a couple of months ago as part of my change regime. Nurse wants to make me into a poster girl for taking it seriously. My BP is completely normal for the first time ever. I lost 16% of my body weight (I am pissed off its not more as this low carbing is boring as all hell) and my numbers are so good from last time.

On the plus side, if the blood is still low I can have a chat about reducing medication. And because my BP has gone right down, the GP will take my request for HRT seriously. That's especially good news for DH, who may live through this period of my life as a result (the patio is being relain this summer, don't think it hasn't crossed my mind to use the opportunity strategically lol).

@wrecktangled - is this about the fact your DH doesn't think "looking after" his children is his job and it's his "day off". If so, when is yours? Also, is he a bit jealous you are sorting yourself out? My DH is being v encouraging but I see him bristle a bit when people tell me I look great. They can be complete tits about that kind of thing with their fragile male egos.

Well done travail excellent work!

No, it's because Sunday is the only day of the week we get together as a family. He gets the dc up, breakfast and makes their lunches whilst I'm at the gym in the mornings during the week so he's not all bad Grin

BorderlineHappy · 25/05/2021 13:13

@travailtotravel brilliant news

Got my eye results back and they are great.
Also had the mashed frozen cauliflower and I have to say I'm impressed.
It's not lumpy and it makes a lovely change from salad.
Needed a lot of pepper and some butter but I'd buy it again.

PaperMonster · 25/05/2021 13:40

@travailtotravel well done! @BorderlineHappy where do you get the frozen mashed cauli from?

Having a F2F meeting with my Rainbows tonight! Not done that for over a year!

BorderlineHappy · 25/05/2021 13:41

I got the frozen cauliflower from Tesco.@PaperMonster

PaperMonster · 25/05/2021 13:50

Thank you. Not somewhere I often shop, but will take a look after the hols! I always manage to make a mushy mess of mashed cauli!!

WreckTangled · 25/05/2021 14:37

I love cauliflower mash. The secret is to dry fry it once you've drained it to get rid of any moisture. I add cheese and mustard. Or garlic granules and cheese. Will definitely look for the frozen one though as I often can't be bothered to make it!

BorderlineHappy · 25/05/2021 14:43

@WreckTangled love the idea of garlic and cheese.
Going to try that next.
And add some shallots.

PaperMonster · 25/05/2021 15:08

Making me feel hungry here!!

WreckTangled · 25/05/2021 18:39

Dh just apologised for the gym thing. He said he was having a moment and didn't want to fall out over me going to the gym (not that we had fallen out). So all is fine. Except I ate too much dinner (turkey chilli) and am now really full.

PaperMonster · 25/05/2021 19:23

Glad the air has been cleared @WreckTangled. To be fair, turkey chilli sounds like a meal you could easily eat too much of!

73kittycat73 · 26/05/2021 11:45

Hi all, sorry I haven't been on, have had a gippy tummy. :( Hope you are all well and doing good. :)
