Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Do they have much fruit in? I'm not so keen on 'bits.' Grin I liked the suggestion of naming them 'Blasphemous Buns.'
Hope you feel better now? 7600 steps is still really awesome! Star

Yes I do, it was my own fault as I put blueberries in my yoghurt and for some reason fruit really makes me feel unwell (high fibre?).

They have a small amount of sultanas in, not as many as normal hot cross buns.

73kittycat73 · 13/05/2021 11:00

Thanks for not bun info. Smile Sorry to hear the effect fruit has on you! Is it all fruit or just berries? That's such a shame.
Glad you felt better in the end. Smile I've got to go up the shop again today and it's cold and horrible out there. Sad I think this year I might need a coat! (I haven't had one for years due to being housebound.)

Dunno I only eat berries so only really know about those.

Ooo yes treat yourself to a lovely coat! I have about five coats BlushGrin

BorderlineHappy · 14/05/2021 06:11

What time does everyone eat
I'm going to trial having a bigger breakfast, small lunch and a decent dinner.
Sometimes I find it hard to eat all my calories.

And hopefully the bigger breakfast keeps me going longer.

WreckTangled · 14/05/2021 07:30

I never used to eat breakfast but recently I have been. So 7am, 12-1(depending on work) and then 5:30/6. I don't eat after evening meal.

BorderlineHappy · 14/05/2021 07:56

Ye I was the same, never ate breakfast.
I find once I eat breakfast I'm starving for the day.

travailtotravel · 14/05/2021 09:21

Breakfast 08.30, Lunch between 12-1.30, dinner about 7.00 - 7.30. Don't eat between dinner and breakfast so there's usually at least a 12 hour "fast" period. I am back to snacking between meals and finding it hard to break the habit back again.

I found a recipe for keto (low carb) cheesecake. Its chocolate and hazelnut, which is basically nutella, right? So I'll give that a go and report in. MIL is coming for garden dinner on Saturday so I thought I'd try a treat. I mean, it'll hardly be calorie free but .... uses cocoa with no added sugar as the chocolate so keen to see how that works in place of melted lovelieness.

73kittycat73 · 14/05/2021 12:35

Did someone say low carb cheesecake?!!! Shock Grin Yes, do please report back!
I have just started trying 16:8 so I have my breakfast between 11am-12pm. I have dinner around 2-3 pm and my evening meal 6-7 pm.
My mum never eats breakfast but I have always eaten it. Can't do without it!

You need to post the link for that cheesecake @travailtotravel.Thems the rules.

I made broccoli, courgette and onion cheese bake.
Turned out gorgeous.
I would use a stronger cheese and maybe some mustard the next time.

travailtotravel · 14/05/2021 13:11

When I 16:8 at the weekend @73kittycat73 I have bacon and eggs at about 12 and then a small snack and then my dinner. Its a vital day to get my overall calories down! But I can't function without having had breakfast on a working day (when I have my oatbran, yum) so can't do it really except at weekends. Its also helpful to avoid the evening snack moster as otherwise if I have something at say 10 when watching telly, it will be 2pm before I can eat which is waaaay too late!

Hello all, the Not Cross Buns are delicious! Very few sultanas in them. They go mouldy quickly so beware! I had a pack of four- one for each lunch this week and Thursday’s had a bit of mould on (which was scraped off and the bun toasted!!) Bit concerned about taking them on holiday now!

That cheesecake sounds delicious! Please report back!

I had another good walk yesterday- about 7 miles. But I wrenched my arm and it was ridiculously painful and I ended up cancelling my Rainbows session last night, taking painkillers and going to sleep!!

Been to see about my dodgy shoulder/arm this morning and have some exercises to do, then back in a fortnight. Am still off work, so am good at doing my physio exercises!

Been doing more painting - it’s not very smooth and I’m getting very fed up with it now!!

PaperMonster · 14/05/2021 13:59

Actually that courgette, broccoli, onion cheese bake sounds delicious too!!

BorderlineHappy · 14/05/2021 15:00

Yes i have decided i need more filling food, since i cant have bread. And cheese seems to fill the gap.

I just chopped everything, glug of ovlive oil. Some garlic and herbs and topped with mozzarella.

Its needs a stronger cheese though and some mustard just to give it a bit of oomp. But it was nice enough and i have enough left for tomorrow.

PaperMonster · 14/05/2021 16:02

@BorderlineHappy you know, I might have a go at that!

BorderlineHappy · 15/05/2021 12:32

Weighed myself and I've lost 1 stone and 2 lb.

BorderlineHappy · 15/05/2021 12:32

Pressed too soon.
Delighted with that, getting there slowly but surely.

73kittycat73 · 15/05/2021 18:18

Huge congrats BorderlineHappy, that's really good! Well done, I bet you feel great?! Star Star Star

PaperMonster · 15/05/2021 19:00

Wow, @BorderlineHappy well done!

BorderlineHappy · 15/05/2021 20:24

Thanks everyone,it's given me a spring to keep going.

PaperMonster · 16/05/2021 18:22

@BorderlineHappy I made my own version of the veggie bake - I used mushrooms, courgette, asparagus, broccoli and cauli in Boursin with Lo-Dough southern fried coating sprinkled on the top. Looked bloody awful - tasted divine!!

WreckTangled · 16/05/2021 18:38

I can't stop eating, I don't know what's wrong with me I just haven't felt full all weekend! Kind of looking forward to going to work tomorrow just to stop me from eating so much.

73kittycat73 · 16/05/2021 19:48

Hi WreckTangled, I would ty not to worry too much, you are usually so good at exercise and weight watching that I don't think one weekend will do too much damage, at all. Is it near the time of the month? Sometimes that used to make me hungry (For LOTS AND LOTS OF CHOCOLATE.).

Typing this with one and a half hands. Grin I sliced my middle finger of my left hand on a tin lid earlier. I didn't think it would stop bleeding but thankfully it now has. Smile
Does anybody else have Amazon Prime? I've found a new show to binge on. I watched the whole first season of Australia's Biggest Loser. I am Googling them in a mo to see how they all got on. It apparently was filmed in 2006!
Keep going WreckTangled, you can do it. Smile
Have you seen anybody about your arm yet PaperMonster?

PaperMonster · 16/05/2021 19:54

Ouchy, that doesn’t sound so good @73kittycat73. Thank you, yes I have seen someone now - rotator cuff injury, which is what I suspected. Been given some very gentle exercises and back to see them in two weeks.

I’ve had chocolate cake this weekend - which can only mean one thing: a birthday!! A tenth one!!
