Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Blimey BorderlineHappy, there's no stopping you today! Smile How do feel after it? Energized or knackered?! Grin
Happy Birthday MsAwesomeDragon! Your plan sounds good. :) One step at a time.
Wow, well done on the six miles PaperMonster! You all put me to shame, I've done bugger all this week. Blush Glad you felt do energized after.
I find I get thrush when I'm doing badly with my diet. Oral and otherwise. Since I started this thread though and have (Mostly) changed my eating habits, I haven't had either.

We just got home. I've done another 12000 steps making it 93000 this week! Exhausted now and really craving some buttery toast 🤤 I won't have any though!

BorderlineHappy · 09/05/2021 19:08

@73kittycat73 I really like my morning workout.Hes on youtube and he makes you sweat. But its not knackering and you dont need special equipment and most importantly he doesnt talk all over it and ruin it.

Weigh in day today. In the last 30 days, I've lost 4-5lbs. Couldn't keep still and needle was hovering between the two. So I'll take 4lbs, leaving me with a loss of 4lb. That's a pound a week and I'm happy with that. Really want to lose 8lb next month but don't think I'll do that. Must remember 1lb a week is OK.

@73kittycat73 thats brilliant, slow and steady wins the race.Havent got around to weighing myself.

I will do it tomorrow for definate.

73kittycat73 · 10/05/2021 12:31

Thank you BorderlineHappy. Good luck for your weigh in tomorrow. If I lose a pound a week I'll hit my target my October. Feel a long way off, but like you say, slow and steady wins the race, and it's going to be October anyway so why not lose along the way anyway. Smile (I hope that make sense! Blush I think I'm trying to say time will pass anyway so might as well use it positively. There, why didn't I say that in the first place? Grin )

@73kittycat73 well done you!

Done five miles this morning with a friend! A new walk for me with some steep steps! My friend’s given me some equipment which should help my shoulder! And I came home to some low carb goodies so I’ve had a Not Cross Bun for lunch!

BorderlineHappy · 10/05/2021 14:03

I made chilli stuffed peppers.Ah they where so nice and made a change from salad Grin.

PaperMonster · 10/05/2021 14:29

@BorderlineHappy they sound de-lish! I got a sample of low carb porridge in my delivery today too!

WreckTangled · 10/05/2021 15:29

That's brilliant! And the most sustainable way to do it, you'll definitely keep it off by being so sensible.

73kittycat73 · 10/05/2021 18:52

Thank you PaperMonster and well done on your walk! Star I hope that does help your shoulder. Smile Hope you like the low carb porridge?
Sounds delish BorderlineHappy. Smile I like the taste of hot food but have a really wussy tongue! So I can't eat much of them. I did try chilli chocolate though once. That was really nice.
Thank you WreckTangled. Smile Having thought about it some more I'm very happy with that. 1lb loss a week is fine. :)

Opened a yogurt and it had mould in it.
Big lump of green/blue mould. At least i could see it and didnt eat half of it with🤮out noticing.

PaperMonster · 11/05/2021 14:25

@BorderlineHappy euuuuw! But you have actually reminded me that I could eat yoghurt!! Absolutely starving today for some reason to the extent of having a bit of a shake! Yoghurt and nuts it is!

WreckTangled · 11/05/2021 15:55

Oh yuck! That would put me off for a while I think!

travailtotravel · 11/05/2021 17:45

Ewww. I like those Light and Free Skyr Yogs. They're only about 81 cals and are protein rich - they're a good snack. The blueberry one is my fave.

WreckTangled · 11/05/2021 17:57

I have these

73kittycat73 · 11/05/2021 18:30

They look nice. Smile I have the Alpro soya yogurts, only small but only about 87 cals each. I am vegetarian but not vegan but have never liked milk (Use Alpro Soya.) but do eat yogurts. I must admit, eating the Alpro ones feels guilt free and that tastes better! Grin

Coyo mine was called. They are made with cocunuts and they are really nice. They are quite expensive nearly 3 euro each. But they are so nice and i only buy 2 a week cause they are more like desserts.

I had a lovely dinner, was making a coffee and decided to have my yogurt.
Turned me right off them.

73kittycat73 · 11/05/2021 19:56

Oh, sorry, just seen your bit about a mouldy yogurt *BorderlineHappy8, how awful! At least you didn't eat any, thankfully. I was eating a salad sandwich once and felt something weird in it, looked and there was half a slug!!! Envy

OP posts:
BorderlineHappy · 11/05/2021 20:28

73kittycat73 ugh just look at it as extra protein Grin

73kittycat73 · 12/05/2021 19:45

Eww. lol. Grin
Well, I'm back on it today, diet and exercise wise. Bought Dr Rangan Chattererjee's book, Feel Great Lose Weight. In it he doesn't refer to 'exercise,' as it has negative connotations (Like PE lessons!), but rather 'Movement' instead. He also emphasises little daily habits. So yesterday and today I have done his 4 Movement exercises. I also did a six minute standing abs exercise from Youtube and walked to the shop and back again. I felt quite anxious going to the shop so need to keep it up daily anyway it seems, for the agoraphobia.
Got myself a new better fitness watch too.
Hope everyone else is doing OK? Are those Hot Cross buns people talking about now know as Not Cross Buns? I had an email about them. They looked quite yum. Smile

OP posts:
WreckTangled · 12/05/2021 19:52

Yes I saw that, they've removed the cross and are going to do them all year round Grin

Good idea to go out each day even if it's just a short walk it sounds like it was definitely helping.

I didn't get my steps today, wasn't really in the mood but that's ok, I'm on 7600.
