Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

How did it go today WreckTangled? (If you don't want to talk about it that's fine. :) ) Your food sounds nice to me! I have been so craving sweet things lately. Have just reminded myself it's a marathon, not a sprint, and I'm not dieting, I'm trying to eat healthy. Also, it makes me feel like crap!

Oh yes, the Metformin farts. As an IBS sufferer I was delighted with low carbing getting rid of my windy bottom - but the first few weeks of Metformin were horrendous!!

Hope everyone’s ok. Not much to report here!

Envious of low carb bakery!

WreckTangled · 20/04/2021 20:22

I think if the side effects done settle in a week or so I would ask to change it's not fair to have to be uncomfortable every day.

Thanks 73kitty it went ok I suppose. I will find out Monday. I probably could have done better I wasn't as prepared as I could have been.

73kittycat73 · 21/04/2021 06:17

Fingers crossed for Monday then. I'm sure you did fine. Hope the week doesn't drag too much for you!
Woke up at 4am and couldn't sleep. Felt like I ate too much yesterday (Had an extra yogurt and two Soreen bars.) and worried about not losing weight. I would like to weigh myself, even though it's only been just over a week since last time, to see how I'm doing. The scales are in my mums' flat though so have to wait until she gets up. I'm hungry and want to eat! Will wait until I'm weighed though.
Good luck all today with your goals. Smile

Had breakfast. Grin Weighed myself, I've lost 4lbs! I haven't been a 12stone something (12st 12lbs) for a very long time. I'm chuffed! Grin Off to see what my BMI is now, I think I've moved from 'Obese,' to 'Overweight.' Btw, does the BNMI Calculator ever give up telling you to loose 'Just 5% of your weight? lol
Just popped on now, I'm 28.9.

Excellent, well done! I have to admit to being a serial weigher. I weigh every day (first thing in the morning, after a wee, naked) and take the lowest reading of the week. It can be triggering for some but for me it's a useful tool, I don't have an ideal weight I want to be though more how I want to look and feel.

73kittycat73 · 21/04/2021 19:17

Thank you! Smile
I don't think I could do daily weighing, the ups and the downs! It's good you can though and it spurs you on. Smile
How is everyone else doing today?

Just had my second AstraZenica jab. Shock I feel ok so far...

Well done, I felt fine after my second Pfizer one.

PaperMonster · 22/04/2021 13:39

Well done on the weight loss @73kittycat73!!

Had my haircut today, hurrah, think it needs to be shorter though! Spent yesterday being as rough as anything after more physio, but I think it’s helping!

PleaseStopExplaining · 22/04/2021 13:58

Struggling not to the sweet stuff today after someone being annoyed with me about something which was provably their fault.

Trying to drink water rather than eat.

PaperMonster · 22/04/2021 14:31

@PleaseStopExplaining stay strong! Xxx

73kittycat73 · 22/04/2021 19:37

Thank you PaperMonster. Smile
How's it going now PleaseStopExplaining? I hope you managed OK?
Hi WreckTangled. Smile
I'm currently sat here worrying. This morning, I can't remember why, but I was looking at treadmills on Ebay. There was some for £69.99. I debated about it and when I went back to purchase they were all gone. I did however found another seller with them for £71.00 so bought one as they were also going fast. I only realised after that both sellers have 0 feedback. Sad I'm really hoping it wasn't a scam. I payed with Paypal though so should hopefully get it back I think, if it is a scam?

WreckTangled · 22/04/2021 19:55

Hmm could be. Hard to say without knowing what it is. Seems a bit of a coincidence they both had 0 feedback. You can phone PayPal and speak to them apparently they're very helpful.

73kittycat73 · 23/04/2021 11:25

Thanks WreckTangled. They have messaged me today to say it takes 2 days to process, then five days to arrive, but don't worry if it take a little bit longer. Sounds fishy doesn't it?
Hope everyone is doing OK today? Looks like another lovely sunny day, though a tad windy.

I just had a 55 minute facial. It was amazing. Also did my food shopping so am almost on 6000 steps.

I guess you'll have to wait and see fingers crossed it's all ok!

travailtotravel · 23/04/2021 14:44

If it doesn't arrive as planned, @73kittycat73, you can just raise a case with eBay. I really wouldn't worry, they'd totally find in your favour and get you the money back and probably block the seller.

Sunshine really helps with the mood and managing everything, no? Neighbours for a BBQ tomorrow so will have to try and avoid temptation!

A facial, OMG. I think I remember what they are like ... hair next Friday for me - just the week of wildness to deal with.

PaperMonster · 23/04/2021 15:55

Hello all! Envious of a facial! Has my hair done yesterday but I think it needs to be shorter next time!

Had a steroid injection in my hip - so my blood sugars will be all over the place after that, but I’m currently not checking!! I’ve to rest for 48 hours now.

Fingers crossed it does arrive @73kittycat73. Lovely day here too, just a bit breezy.

73kittycat73 · 23/04/2021 19:15

Thank you all. Smile I appreciate your comments. You're right, I do have Ebay, and Paypal behind me. I really hope it does come through though, I quite fancy taking a stroll on it in the evenings. Smile
Nice one with the facial. Star I bet it felt amazing?
Good luck for tomorrow travailtotravel!
I hope you feel better soon PaperMonster. Flowers
I started undercoating the porch today. The pink sparkly paint goes on tomorrow! Grin

The facial was amazing!

Ouch paper! I've chaperoned a steroid injection in the hip before and it looked so painful! Definitely ignore your sugar levels for a bit. Hope it helps.

I got some of those mini vienetta ice creams on a stick from Aldi, so tasty! 8.8g of carbs.

PaperMonster · 23/04/2021 20:54

Oh they look tasty! @WreckTangled! The last time I had a steroid jab it was a guided one under x-ray and it wasn’t as painful as this one. It’s really aching now. Ironically the pain’s been much better over the past few weeks because of the walking I’ve been doing, but my hip is still very weak. Went in clutching my arm because I’d hurt that opening the car door!!! But at least my next appointment is for both my hip and arm!! Saves me the pain of driving there twice!!

@73kittycat73 pink sparkly paint sounds fabulous! I’ve been doing some painting recently, but not made a good job of it! Been trying to use my time off work productively!!

73kittycat73 · 25/04/2021 11:38

Hello everyone. Smile
ooh, that ice cream looks tasty. Grin
Thank you Paper. Smile Got it finished yesterday, well, the painting. Today I have to try and remove all the paint I dripped on the floor! Shock lol
I overate last night. Blush I got Rangan Chatterjees' book 'Fell Great: Lose Weight,' after it was recommended on these boards. I found the first bit very triggering and it was explaining how being overweight wasn't our fault, companies had paid millions to find out how to tempt us to eat their products, and dopamine levels, etc. Then I remember thinking, 'It's not my fault.' and going for it! Doh! Have to read a bit more tonight, hopefully not as triggering! Grin
