Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

@PleaseStopExplaining I’ll have a look at what mine is and come back to you.

OH has made his whole meal bread this morning. The house smells de-lish. So tempted!!

73kittycat73 · 18/04/2021 19:04

Hi, to the PP looking for a meter, I was given one by my practice and it's called Accu-Chek mobile.
Hi all, have been out painting in the garden today. Just a few more jobs to do, then it will be done. :) Had a busy day yesterday, didn't do my walk (Weekends off.) but ended up doing almost 5k anyway!
It was sunny for a while here today but the wind was cold again. Not all day though, enjoyed it while I was out there.

Mine’s an SD Codefree. I think I had the Accu Chek when I had GD when pregnant, the name rings a bell. I had it for ages afterwards - cos they wouldn’t take it back and I didn’t know what to do with it!!

I’ve done bugger all today! Mostly I’ve read! Had a nap! Painted a stone for one of the children I see when I help out at school. I had thought about sewing again, but couldn’t muster up the enthusiasm for that!!

Had the thinnest slice of OH’s bread though - it was more butter than bread!!

Mmmm bread and butter.

It's been real log warm here. I've been on two walks and did a short abs workout. Felt really ill after lunch, I have mild diabetic gastroparesis and I think the raspberries with lunch did me in. Bleurgh. Had roast for dinner and treated myself to some stuffing balls. So tasty.

13000 steps today. Back to work tomorrow after two weeks off, it's going to be tough!

PaperMonster · 19/04/2021 12:40

Well done on the steps @WreckTangled. Sorry to hear about the gastroparesis though.

I’ve been to see a physio today for my arm. I’d like to say it feels better, but I think it’s going to take a while. But he totally gets it and I am hopeful for good results! He’s told me not to walk today. So I’m sitting in the sunshine!!

BorderlineHappy · 19/04/2021 16:08

Well i had a blow out of epic proportions over the weekend.
Had indian takeaway on Saturday, had Lamb dinner yesterday and i have a fair few glasses of wine.

Im knackered today though. But i still managed my 1/2 hour workout this morning.Havent done any walking really yet.

WreckTangled · 19/04/2021 18:58

Mmmm Indian!

Hope the physio works paper

I got up at 5:45 and did an upper body dumbbell work out. Once the dc were at school I went for a quick walk then took ds to the park after schools so have done 12500 steps. Feeling pretty good. I've got an interview tomorrow, not looking forward to it. It's an internal one to move up a step in my role.

73kittycat73 · 19/04/2021 19:55

Oh WreckTangled just had to google diabetic gastroparesis, poor you! Sad I hope it didn't last long? Or did you need medical attention?
Glad you're seeing someone about your arm PaperMonster. Lets hope some good come from it, though sounds like you are on the right track.
Hi BorderlineHappy, well done on the walk! Star I did mine today after the weekend off. I can honestly say my legs seemed to forget what walking was and didn't want to co-operate. Grin Never mind about the weekend blowout, it's gone now, onwards and upwards! Smile

Oh, just saw your update WreckTangled. Well done on all that exercise! Star Specially getting up so early to do it!
Do you want to move up a step? Very good luck to you for tomorrow, sending you lots of positive vibes!

It's ok I only have it mildly so I just feel unwell rather than being sick or anything. Yes I do but there's two different options and I don't know which one to go for 🤔

Also I really want chocolate. I could eat loads right now Grin

73kittycat73 · 19/04/2021 20:16

Glad it's not too bad then. Smile Oh, tricky with the two options. Maybe do a Pros and Cons list? I hear ya with the chocolate! I had to give in and have a bite of my left over Easter egg earlier. I was watching Andi Peters' food fest on QVC. God they had some delicious treats on there!

Hey all. Gorgeous in my part of the world today so I finished work on time and went out up onto the Downs for my walk. Proper fresh air and big wide views. Made a huge difference to my sense of peace and wellbeing to see a full 360 horizon. Not having lost any weight for the past 3 weeks ( poor choices) I've just nudged down to 200lb. It's still a lot but its 35lb down on when I started. I am literally half way then!

WreckTangled · 19/04/2021 21:29

Well done travail! You must be in a similar area to me.

Easter egg is the best, I'm impressed you have any left tbh I'd have eaten it ages ago!

BorderlineHappy · 19/04/2021 21:47

I have found a bakery not to far from me that does low carb food.I can order and go and collect it.Im delighted.
Be ordering on Wednesday some nice treats.

travailtotravel · 19/04/2021 22:11

@WreckTangled South Downs here ...

WrapUpWarm2021 · 19/04/2021 23:04

.

WreckTangled · 20/04/2021 06:18

Wow borderline! There's a cafe in one of the big towns here that does some keto bits but I haven't tried them.

Yes travaial I'm a fair drive from walking them but can see them whenever I drive south. I live in part of the South Downs national park.

BorderlineHappy · 20/04/2021 09:48

@WreckTangled it means i can order a certain amount.Enough for me and order it more often.

Its expensive though 18 euro for a parmesan loaf. Its huge though,so i have asked can it be frozen.Still waiting to hear back.

73kittycat73 · 20/04/2021 11:00

Sound like a gorgeous walk travailtotravel and well done on that weightloss! Star I know it's frustrating not losing for three weeks but it'll come off, I'm sure. Smile You've done so well so far!
WreckTangled normally the eggs would have been eaten on the day. Grin I'm trying to be very good though and not eat too much chocolate. Good luck today, I hope it goes really well for you. Star
BorderlineHappy that bakery sounds ace! Star Wish I had one near. Apart from the bread, you'll have to let us know what gorgeous treats they have in. Smile

FrankieDoyle · 20/04/2021 16:26

Sorry haven't posted much...work's been hectic!

Does starting Metformin make you feel total shit at first?

On my 3rd week on it...bit of an upset tummy, headaches, a bit tearful. Fatigue...

I've recently stopped the pill though so most likely that?

PleaseStopExplaining · 20/04/2021 17:43

Not been on Metformin @FrankieDoyle but what I hear from friends is it can do a number on your tummy.

73kittycat73 · 20/04/2021 18:19

Those pancakes sound delish. :)
All I remember from starting taking Metformin was the farts! I couldn't stop, thought I was going to deflate. Grin Seriously though, it's only recently I discovered (From our lovely *WreckTangled. Smile) that you should take them with/after a meal to help with tummy troubles.

OP posts:
WreckTangled · 20/04/2021 18:38

Is it the slow release metformin? If not this can be easier on your tummy but isn't usually prescribed in the first instance (maybe a cost thing?).

I haven't eaten well today. Two protein bars, some chicken, a small beetroot and feta salad and a small bar of dairy milk Blush feel like I might as well have a protein bar for dinner too Grin
