Neighbour using wheelie bin

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:14

Would you be annoyed if neighbour used your wheelie bin?
Just gone to mine and bag been put in that has meant top
Left up so something has got to bag and scratched it open so can see contents are not ours
Bins due friday and now not room for my own bag
Dh says leave it maybe one off where as I want to say something
Its bad enough they leave there 2 bins full to brim with lid up so cats or whatever get it.
We only have the one bin they have 2 , other neighbour has one but lives on own so its never full plus she keeps in her garden as its bigger than our ones and level , ours has steps so getting bin in is hard which is why we and neighbours leave in a bin area .
I don't think its an error as our bin has number on top and side.
If it was bin day and we had room and they asked I would have no problem.
So do I leave it this time or say something ( maybe just by a lock if such thing exsists)

It’s rude but as a one off you’re overthinking this.

OldEvilOwl · 03/02/2021 11:17

Yes that's really cheeky. Can you move it so that they can't access it? Take the rubbish out and put it next to their bin if you know which neighbour it is

Wankerchief · 03/02/2021 11:19

Take the bag out and put it by their bin?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:22

There bins are full and overflowing and no unfortunately can't get bins up steps in back garden and no room out front .
I know can't get my own bag in although depending what time bin men come , they are quite good so I can probably ask them to take my extra bag and explain
Ndn do not recycle anything hence why bins are full , they might actually have enough room if they bothered .

Do you know definitely which neighbour it is? Surely someone wanting to do this would go further up the street to be less traceable?
You could go to your prime suspect and say you are happy for them to use your bin but only if there is still space in it immediately prior to collection time. Or suggest they approach the other neighbour who is more likely to have space.
In my street we ask first if anyone has space - we wouldn’t dream of just appropriating someone’s bin.
Alternatively if they are serial offenders, remove their bag and leave it on their doorstep!

longtompot · 03/02/2021 11:22

It is rude. They should have asked you, especially as it filled up your bin so you couldn't use it. I would mention it to them, and depending on their answer, I would get a bin lock.

3JsMa · 03/02/2021 11:24

That's cheeky.
Take it out and out in on the top of their bin.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:24

The bag is also ripped to shreds so if I take it out it will end up all over the floor as they left bin lid up as it didn't fit in
I only have a small kitchen bin so i prob have half a bin bag to go in
I want to just knock and say can you please not put bags in bin without checking if we have more to go in, please feel free to ask night before collection and if space your welcome

Yes know which neighbour as only 2 of us need to use this area , only accessible by the 3 properties and one doesn't use it

Lillipops · 03/02/2021 11:28

Would highly recommend a bin lock Wink

PeterPandemic · 03/02/2021 11:30

Squish down everything you can this time and get bins locks for next time.

LastTrainEast · 03/02/2021 11:31

With all the rules now about bins that can lead to problems with collection it is something that should be stamped on firmly. Neighbour must know that but doesn't care. If you are ABSOLUTELY sure then pop it back through his letterbox. (ok maybe just a sodden envelope with his name on it will do to make the point)

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:32

Yes think I will look for a bin lock and maybe this time say nothing , just ask bin men nicely on friday of they will take my extra and explain.
Although come the summer its horrible as there are always loads of flies as they fill there bins so that they are overflowing and we end up with a houseful of flys, if they just recycled they would have space .
I don't get it , its not hard to throw recycling in boxes , fair enough I know some don't like food waste , but they have maggots crawling over there bins normally in summer anyway

Take their bag out and put it in another bag if it is ripped, then leave it next to their bins with a note..please dont use my bin.... You should nip this in the bud or you will set yourself up for more problems in the future. If it happens again, return their bag again and get a bin lock.

BriocheForBreakfast · 03/02/2021 11:33

Sounds like it needs nipping in the bud. They might start using your bin regularly if you don't say something.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:41

Yes this is why I think I should politely say something as if they get away with it once it could happen again.
Technically the council can refuse to take if there is something in the bin that shouldn't be so if there is it means I could be stuck with the bin and they do chuck everything in bin , electrical items the lot .
They have once before put spare bin bags on top of our bin , when put out for collection but i just moved them back on top of theirs as again council can refuse to take them

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 03/02/2021 11:44

Of course you should have a polite word. I don't know why anyone wouldn't.

Just speak to them whether your husband wants you to or not.

Keratinsmooth · 03/02/2021 11:47

Are they perhaps moving and therefore don’t give a shite?

Cattitudes · 03/02/2021 11:47

Just get a bin lock, you can get some which will automatically unlock when they are tipped up by the bin lorry.

ItsALovelyDayToday · 03/02/2021 11:51

We had this situation with neighbours putting beer cans etc in our recycling so the lid wouldn’t close. I got so enraged about it (happened several times) that I went round, knocked on the door with cans in hand. When he answers the door I said I think these are yours and gave them to him, scampered off before he had time to retort. Never had a problem again.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/02/2021 11:53

No not moving , I am not that lucky

OP posts:
GlittercheeksOakleaf · 03/02/2021 12:02

When my neighbour tried this, I took the bag out and put it back in his garden and when I saw him told him why.

You need to nip it in the bud before it ends up happening regularly.

Onlymeandthedognow · 03/02/2021 12:03

Some horrid family tried leaving dirty nappies (not bagged) on the lids of everyone’s bins...🤮
One day I had enough, got on my rubber gloves, collected them all up... bagged them and tied them to his front door handle.
Never happened again.
Filthy pigs.

H1978 · 03/02/2021 12:04

We had someone put something non recyclable in our recycle bin and the council took it away from us for a whole year. We normally have ours in our backyard and there’s no access but we had put it out the night before as the collection was the next day.

It’s definitely not okay for them to use it without asking.

Derbee · 03/02/2021 12:11

Buy a wheelie bin gravity lock
