If you have a kitchen like this

This isn't my house, but I'm looking to get a kitchen similar to this one in design.

If you have a kitchen like this, what are the practical day to day things I need to consider? For example, with the sink in the island I won't want soap for hand washing sitting out, or hand creme like I have currently. Where would they go?
Also do you have recycling bins in a cupboard in the island?
Thanks!

Ours is a similar style. We have 2 big sinks and under one we keep the soap etc and under the other we have bins. We also have a pull out corner cupboard to hide the kettle (or you could have a boiling water tap) and a cupboard with a counter, drawers and shelves for the toaster and coffee machine. We built a small pantry to house most of the japs/tins. The island has the hob and lots of drawers for plates, saucepans etc.

Thank you! Anything you @soundofsilence1 would do differently?

No we are pleased with how it turned out. Floor to ceiling cupboards are good too. Although I need a chair to access the top ones they are great for bits you dont use often. We have a small shadow gap above with an led light strip. I also recommend a bora hob with integrated extractor as it is a lot neater than a seperate extractor.

NoImagination90210 · 02/02/2021 15:36

460k? I’m moving!

FinallyHere · 02/02/2021 15:44

My mother was born and grew up in Bangor.

We loved to look onlibe and pick out our dream house.

The prices. And the views.

JimmyTheBrave · 02/02/2021 15:53

Much of N Wales is pretty cheap for property I think? I'd imagine there are many reasons why that house doesn't command a huge figure.

I have family who grew up relatively close to Bangor and couldn't wait to move away to Uni. Not sure there's much employment prospects but could be wrong?

Anyway, that's a fab kitchen!

JetBlackSteed · 02/02/2021 15:55

It's Bangor, Northern Ireland.

We have a large island 3m x 1.5m in our new kitchen with sink and hob - no other workspace in the kitchen area.

I didnt want the popup power socket thing and with nowhere else to put a kettle we have a 3in1 boiling tap from Abode (much cheaper than the Quooker ones) they also do similar normal taps so i was able to choose a matching tap for the utility sink.

I have lots of drawers on one side of the island and bar stools on the opposite - not much space under the sink as the boiling tap bits and bobs are there as well as an insinktorator waste disposal.

I keep handwash and dishwashing liquid in nice glass dispensers that can go under the sink but picked nice ones i dont mind leaving out.

Our bin cupboard isn't on the island but behind in our big cupboards and that is my only regret as it would have been closer on the island i guess - but i do have a full size wine fridge and dishwasher instead....

We have all other small appliances in our big cupboards - toaster rarely used and microwave sits on a shelf, we just keep the door open when using for 2 mins. Cake mixer or smoothie maker i bring over to the island and use a socket hidden under the bench.

My main advice would be boiling tap and waste disposal - relatively cheap and has been brilliant. We have Silstone worktop with integrated seamless sink, so easy to keep clean!

I’m distracted by the fact they appear to have papered the hallway with the stair carpet!

JimmyTheBrave · 02/02/2021 16:10

Oh, I saw Bangor and assumed Wales

JetBlackSteed · 02/02/2021 16:13

I'd decided not to put the hob on the island as I thought it might splatter people sitting opposite on bar stools? There was only 360 mm between the edge of the hob and the other side where people would sit. Also, is it not more work to keep it sparkly clean all the time?
I currently have a stainless steel gas hob and it's a pita to keep clean as it goes streaky if cleaned while still warm.

Yes, the hallway is a bit distracting 😂

"For example, with the sink in the island I won't want soap for hand washing sitting out, or hand creme like I have currently. Where would they go?"
We have an island with a sink in similar to the house you posted I leave one bottle of hand wash out by the taps because I don't want to be opening a cupboard with food e.g. raw chicken on my hands to get to the soap. Everything else washing up liquid etc is kept under the sink.
Our council doesn't offer any recycling everything goes in the same wheelie bin so thats not an issue and my kitchen bin is big free standing Wesco peddle bin again I don't want to be opening cupboards etc. to get to a bin with food on my hands.
Ive never had an island before ours came with our house I really like it. But if I was putting it in Id would have make sure its big enough for two people to be able to sit comfortably side by side and eat say breakfast, (we have a very large dinning room but sometimes I just want to. eat in the kitchen), the side that overhangs the cupboards enough to enable stools to fit underneath is the short side of the island and just slightly too small to allow two adults to sit comfortably without feeling your sitting on top of each other.
My cooker/oven is parallel to the island and I love the fact that you can take something out of the oven and effortlessly turn around and put it on the island e.g to baste something especially as I have a halogen cooker and apparently your not meant to slide things around on them.
The previous owner also put a pop up plug socket into the island and thats really useful.

wimbler · 02/02/2021 16:19

no sink on the island! Look at your sink now and what is next to it? most people have a draining board full of stuff or bits waiting to be washed up (at least I do....) would you want that on the focal point in the middle of your kitchen? Much better for a hob or nothing on the island in my opinion.

Abracadabra12345 · 02/02/2021 16:22

I hate that garden and the whole house is overlooked from every angle. I love the big windows but half the neighbourhood can look in. I agree about the hallway! There’s been a lot of money spent on it, that’s for sure and it’s very well presented.

Sorry, no help whatsoever with regards to the kitchen!

Borogroves · 02/02/2021 16:29

I'd have a washing up liquid and hand soap dispenser built into the worktop.

Iliftmyeyestothehills · 02/02/2021 16:30

I have a boiling tap I absolutely loath it and never use it we tried it for 3 weeks and then turned to off. I use a kettle on the cooker seems pretty quick, our cooker is one of those big range cookers, don't waste your money on one on one of those, (again it came with the house and is virtually brand new so I cant really justify replacing it at the moment). My dishwasher is a built in and in the island near the sink and thats vey useful as you can prepare food on the island and just bend over chuck the dishes etc straight into it. The rest of the island is cupboards/shelves.
The top is is quartz it does mark quite easily but I bought some stone worktop cleaner and the marks seem to come out very easily.

Again like the house you posted my sink is a double stainless one and set under the worktop and you do get a lot of water splashed on to the top when people wash their hands etc.I seem to be the only person who ever sees it and wipes it up!

My mother-in-law has built-in dish soap--there's a hole next to the tap with a pump that matches the kitchen; don't remember the set up underneath but there must be a reservoir or refillable bottle of some sort...

Iliftmyeyestothehills · 02/02/2021 16:35

Christ I've just looked up how much our 3 in 1 boiling cost nearly a £1000 what a total waste of money!!

Kendodd · 02/02/2021 16:37

£460,000!!! ShockShockShock

SleeplessWB · 02/02/2021 18:56

I love my boiling water tap! We have sink on island though I do agree with what a pp said about having the dishes out... I just wanted the hob tucked away so less dangerous for little ones. We have a pull out drawer with soap etc next to sink, then a pull out bin next to that. Dishwasher on other side of sink. Love my kitchen.

JetBlackSteed · 02/02/2021 19:12

Thanks everyone. I have a boiling water tap already and love it too so will be keeping that. The built in soap dispenser is a great idea @Borogroves I think I'll include that.
Still prefer the sink on the island and hob off to the side, I think!
