What could this vibrating sensation when I’m in bed be?

Soubriquet · 02/02/2021 08:08

And no its not that you dirty vipers Wink

Sometimes when I’m in bed half asleep, a vibrating sensation happens that jolts me awake.

It happened most of last night so I’m quite cheesed off that I didn’t get w good sleep.

No the tumble dryer wasn’t on
No the heating wasn’t on

Any ideas?

We have something like this, not all the time but every so often. When I've enquired before with a local know-it-all they said it's the dockyards about 2 miles from us as the crow flies. They run engines (or something boaty) for hours overnight to test them or clean them or something. Not sure. But it's the dockyards.

Drives me utterly crazy. DH claims not to hear it which makes me even madder! Shock

EffYouSeeKaye · 02/02/2021 10:22

Do you have a metal bed frame on a wooden / laminate floor by any chance? I used to get this and it went away when I got a new bed & carpet.

Although there was one time when it was an actual earthquake 🤔😂

Tartanbedspread · 02/02/2021 10:26

I eat this, in my case it’s neurological weirdness related to migraines, it could be similar to hypnopompic hallucinations which happen as you fall asleep which I also get or perhaps a hypnic jerk? Failing that probably a poltergeist rattling your bed just as you drift off!

Ridingthegravytrain · 02/02/2021 10:29

I booted dh out of the bed because I thought it was him fidgeting. But it still happens. Really annoying and keeps me awake and makes my heart race each time it happens. It startles me. So I guess it’s something my body is doing even though I’m not asleep at the time

Poppins2016 · 02/02/2021 10:33

Next door - maybe a tumble dryer or dehumidifier? Your fridge/freezer?

Barbadossunset · 02/02/2021 10:37

I used to experience that in our last house. It was near Salisbury Plain and I used to wonder if the army was doing something in a secret location many miles underground.

Soubriquet · 02/02/2021 10:43

I have a divan bed on a carpet so that that one ruled out

There’s a garage between me and the neighbour so I doubt it’s their electric.

I’m deaf, so I don’t really hear anything with my hearing aid out

I think it could be sleep paralysis (even though I can move my to check my phone as I panic that my alarm has gone off) or vivid dreaming.

I've also had this. It's very weird!

StepOutOfLine · 02/02/2021 10:51

If it's inside you it could be a vitamin deficiency.

NomadNoMore · 02/02/2021 10:55

My double glazing used to have m!

NomadNoMore · 02/02/2021 10:55

Whoops, hum....

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/02/2021 11:01

I think I know the answer, during lockdown I have watched a number of old black and white Ealing Comedy films and my guess the vibration is being caused by a group of old lags digging a tunnel to a bank.

If there is no bank near you it will just mean that they have gone off course and will at some point the tunnel will break out in a Ladies Underwear Factory, Police Station or below a Swimming Pool.

I used to suffer with sleep paralysis really bad. It sounded like an electrical current in my ears which went through my body. It felt like I was being dragged around the room and ceiling by a force. Absolutely terrifying.

justanotherneighinparadise · 02/02/2021 11:11

Have you got wheels on your bed? I was getting vibrated out of my sleep because my bed was on casters and the nearby lorries were vibrating the ground causing my bed to hum like a tuning fork.

Soubriquet · 02/02/2021 11:17

I do have wheels but the carpet is very thick and it’s hard to push the bed.

I’m gonna go with masturbating ghost

If it happens again tonight, I’ll tell it to fuck off and see it that helps Grin

We sometimes have this due to goods trains waiting up and keeping engines on and the way the local geography is the vibrations transfer

cosmopolitanplease · 02/02/2021 11:20

I have experienced this twice but in my case it was dh vibrating. I was lying there awake and suddenly he would start vibrating, like a phone on silent. It was definitely coming from him and there was nothing else to explain it. It stopped after a few seconds. I did Google it at the time but didn't find out anything definitive.

This was nearly ten years ago and he's still fit and well so must not be anything to worry about. I don't know if he still vibrates in his sleep as we have separate bedrooms now because of his snoring (bliss Smile)

It’ll be the wheels. Can you take them off?

Everyone on here was convinced it was a ghost when I posted about it over a year ago. It was the wheels 🙄🥴

Dionysus78 · 02/02/2021 11:26

I had something similar last year. Turned out my next door neighbours was a cannabis farm, and they had a massive extractor running at night.

flobberdobberr · 02/02/2021 11:26

Quite obviously aliens Grin

Soubriquet · 02/02/2021 11:28

I’ll try taking the wheels off and see if that helps.

What’s weird is that it isn’t every night or even all night when it does happen.

It so random I can’t pin point it

I get this too! I've ruled out pretty much everything and have also gone with ghost Grin

dizzycatdance2 · 02/02/2021 11:39

Hearing aid recharging?

Couchbettato · 02/02/2021 11:46

Could it be neurological? I have exploding head syndrome and I get a bang and a flash sometimes when I'm trying to go to sleep. Perhaps this humming is something similar.

Soubriquet · 02/02/2021 11:48

Hearing aid is a battery one
