If you had to make a pack lunch right now, could you?

As in at 8pm on Sunday night, for a 5yo for school tomorrow? What would be in it?

Because that's what I'm having to do!

We got a text at 6pm saying the kitchen staff are isolating so all kids need a pack lunch this week. Typically the online delivery is coming tomorrow and all the shops are now shut.

So I've russled up a home made pizza (flour and greek yogurt base) with a defrosted portion of hidden veg sauce and the last dregs of the block of cheese, a slightly bruised apple and a couple of Jaffa cakes from a pack I forgot i bought at Christmas!

Thankfully school are the pack lunch police even in normal times but I think given the extremely short notice they'll say nothing at all!

The alternatives were a batch cooked portion of beef stew, frozen sausages or fish fingers.

So what would be in your pack lunch?

DC1 has a slightly brown banana in place of the apple as DC2 won't eat bananas...

Yes, but nothing with bread.

I could do a salad with roast chicken leftovers, plus fruit, a yogurt, bit of cheese, a biscuit.

ShirleyPhallus · 31/01/2021 20:48

We could do it here but that’s only cos the food shop arrived today

Slight aside but I’ve always called it a “packed lunch” rather than “pack lunch”. Is this a regional thing? I’ve never heard it called a pack lunch before!

The day before food shop day would be a tall order

It would be some carrot sticks, and a tin of baked beans and a spoon to eat them with

Shieldingending · 31/01/2021 20:50

It would be spaghetti hoops in a food flask here !!

Sexnotgender · 31/01/2021 20:50

Yes. Could make a sandwich, apple, crackers, grapes, squares of cheese, cucumber.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 31/01/2021 20:51

Ham & cucumber wrap
A few mini sausage rolls and cocktail sausages
An apple
A packet of Mini Cheddars

I dread to think what Lunchbox Police would make of that 😕

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 31/01/2021 20:51

Spanish omelette.

Imissmoominmama · 31/01/2021 20:52

I’d give a cold omelette with onions, peppers and cheese; some carrot sticks; a satsuma, and I could make some flapjacks.

We have no bread in.

bumpdownthestairs · 31/01/2021 20:52

It's deffo a packed lunch 😆 ooop north anyway! I could make one up and even offer the choice between a sandwich or a wrap, the ham is a bit questionable but sure they would survive eating it 😂

Bunnybigears · 31/01/2021 20:52

Yes because I went food shopping yesterday so it would be a fairly normal packed lunch or ham sandwich, crisps, cucumber, little tomatoes, carrot sticks and a yogurt.

Day before food shop we would be able to do some sort of tuna and sweetcorn pasta and maybe a chocolate biscuit.

Justgivemewine · 31/01/2021 20:52

Ham sandwiches, a packet or crisps and some grapes.

Only because we are super organised with food because we are only doing online shopping. In normal times it would be a case of dashing to the shop first thing Monday morning in a panic!

Ellieboolou33 · 31/01/2021 20:53

Yes, Would not be an issue here, always have bread, fruit and yogurts in.

BeeFarseer · 31/01/2021 20:53

I could do a decent one, but that's because my DC always want that sort of food at lunchtime, and they'll ask for a 'packed lunch' even though it all gets put on a plate.

I could do:

  • ham and/or cheese sandwiches
  • bit of salad
  • yogurt
  • Apple/mandarin/pear
  • pack of crisps/rice cakes/popcorn

If I had to do it at short notice though, I'd make a flatbread or a pizza as I nearly always have flour.

It's a packed lunch. A lunch that is packed. Regional variations include snap and piece
QueenofLouisiana · 31/01/2021 20:54

Roast chicken and cucumber or cheese and pickle rolls. Carrot sticks, crisps and fruit.

My first buy when I was in self isolation was a small chest freezer, it’s been very useful.

It's not regional, it's just people calling it the wrong thing. It is a packed lunch. Some people call it a pack lunch because they type as they speak. Same as people writing seen as instead of seeing as.
Greenandcabbagelooking · 31/01/2021 20:58

I could, in that I could make cold things to take for lunch, but it's wouldn't be a sandwich/crisps/veg sticks type lunch.

Mini pork pies pita bread, a apple and some caterpillar cake. Or cold pasta and sauce.

mindutopia · 31/01/2021 20:58

Yes, always have something randomly suitable in the house. At the moment, it would be:

tuna mayo sandwich
carrot sticks
hula hoops or mini cheddars
a cheese string
some sort of pudding - yogurt or fruit

In normal times, my go to packed school lunch is that or a mini frozen cheese pizza cut into slices with veg, fruit, some yogurt, etc. But I was an idiot and thought I ordered a weeks worth of Tesco on Friday night, but I walked away from the computer to get a glass of wine and didn't come back, so assumed our Tesco order for the week went through (it didn't, internet timed out). So we currently have no mini pizzas and everything else is a bit slim. Mine haven't had school lunches since the start of the year though due to social distancing (it's only for R-Y2).

Ah i see, really wasn’t being a prick about that, legit thought it was something I hadn’t heard of before Flowers

cerealgamechanger · 31/01/2021 21:00

Yep. We're always stocked up. Wouldn't be a problem.

mindutopia · 31/01/2021 21:01

Though if I couldn't, I'd just go to the local spar on the way to school and find some things and shove them in. If they'll eat it, for a day or two, it's absolutely fine.

Tianatiers · 31/01/2021 21:01

Yes it would be fine here, we always have bread in the freezer and things like eggs, tuna or cheese to go in a sandwich. Then veg sticks (carrot, peppers, cucumber, tomatoes) and fruit to go with and a yoghurt.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 31/01/2021 21:02

Yes.
Sandwich - ham, cheese, egg or tuna.
I think there's some salad leaves that could go in it too.
Cucumber and/or carrot sticks.
Cheese cubes.
Crisps.
Iced gems.
Apple and/or banana
Raisins.
Mini soreen bar.

Obviously I wouldn't pack all of that for a 5 year old but they could pick a selection.

Updatemate · 31/01/2021 21:03

ShirleyPhallus

I've always called it a packed lunch but round here it's known as a pack up- both north. I think I just mixed the two!

On any other day of the week I'd have peppers, carrots and cucumber in the fridge and probably bread (we don't eat much bread) but I'd used the last of the carrots in our Sunday roast and cucumber was more liquid than solid when I located it in the bottom of the fridge.
