If you had to make a pack lunch right now, could you?

As in at 8pm on Sunday night, for a 5yo for school tomorrow? What would be in it?

Because that's what I'm having to do!

We got a text at 6pm saying the kitchen staff are isolating so all kids need a pack lunch this week. Typically the online delivery is coming tomorrow and all the shops are now shut.

So I've russled up a home made pizza (flour and greek yogurt base) with a defrosted portion of hidden veg sauce and the last dregs of the block of cheese, a slightly bruised apple and a couple of Jaffa cakes from a pack I forgot i bought at Christmas!

Thankfully school are the pack lunch police even in normal times but I think given the extremely short notice they'll say nothing at all!

The alternatives were a batch cooked portion of beef stew, frozen sausages or fish fingers.

So what would be in your pack lunch?

Yes:
Egg/tuna mayo sandwich
Tuna + veg cous cous
Tuna mayonnaise
Bean chilli from the freezer
Sausage sandwiches
Crisps
Chocolate bar

A school lunch in this house consists of sandwiches, fruit, maybe a yogurt, cucumber or carrot sticks and I could make one tonight.

I certainly wouldn't be cooking anything and yes, it called a packed lunch.

BejeweledCrocs · 31/01/2021 21:04

Yes cos even our home lunches have a packed lunch vibe. If I didn't have bread I would do a pasta salad.

Bet there'll be some interesting meals in school tomorrow though.

I could offer a selection of sandwich fillings, and even options on the bread. Lots of fruit, crisps, Club biscuits (standard), crackers, cheese, cocktail sausages etc etc This isn't standard for us, I got a huge delivery a couple of days ago.

GreenSlide · 31/01/2021 21:05

I could do a cheese sandwich, with raspberries and a peppa pig yoghurt. Not too bad!

Samanabanana · 31/01/2021 21:05

Yes, could do cheese or ham sandwhich, cucumber sticks, fruit, yoghurt, raisins etc. But food delivery comes on Fridays so we are fully stocked!

pourmeanotherglass · 31/01/2021 21:07

We normally shop at the weekend so the fridge is full. Ive just made myself a packed lunch with leftover roast chicken.
We nearly always have the ingredients for some sort of pasta salad at the end of the week when the bread runs out.

Love51 · 31/01/2021 21:07

If I didn't have bread it would be cheese and crackers for one and cous cous for the other. Plus fruit, veg and biscuit/crisps/yoghurt.
Top tip in a pinch, from my DH, get them each a scotch egg. No hassle! (There are 2 mini supermarkets between our house and the school...)

Quit4me · 31/01/2021 21:08

Yes- just make a sandwich, fruit, crackers or crisps, biscuit or cake bar of some kind?
Don’t most people have at least something to make a sandwich or similar at all times? I would massively panic if my fridge was totally bare!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/01/2021 21:09

Yes, because we can only go shopping at weekends, and late evenings. DH is a Keyworker, I'm at home with children. Only problem is that I'm buying big packets, rather than individual portions of things currently.

hiredandsqueak · 31/01/2021 21:10

I would struggle as it's the day before a shopping delivery. I have tuna, some bread rolls, an end of its life banana, some cherry tomatoes and I could rustle up a flapjack as I have baking ingredients and dried fruit.

Tianatiers · 31/01/2021 21:11

If you keep your bread in the freezer you never run out and it never goes stale. I order two loaves a week, (three if we're running low) and they go straight in the freezer. I make toast with bread straight from the freezer and if I'm making sandwiches I make then with frozen bread which is fully defrosted in about 10 mins.

LetItGoGo · 31/01/2021 21:11

Crackers and cheese.
We always have cheese at least!

Jellycatspyjamas · 31/01/2021 21:11

Yep, we could have a sandwich, wrap or bagel with ham, cheese or cream cheese and cucumber. A yoghurt, pepper or cucumber sticks with humus dip, some grapes or an apple and a biscuit or some crisps. The makings of a packed lunch are staple foods in our house, I can always rustle something up if need be.

TokyoSashimi · 31/01/2021 21:13

Lordy.

Right. Based on what we have I could do a tuna sweetcorn mayo white bread sandwich, cucumber sticks, a cold pain au raison and some gingernuts. Possibly even sliced apples (would need to check).

Pity DS1 would not eat any of that though.

Oh and some deluxe champagne truffle chocs we bought as a gift for a sick relative who sadly died before we could send them to her.

SquigglePigs · 31/01/2021 21:13

Yes but it would be cold pasta or rice based rather than bread, with a yogurt and a tangerine or some grapes.

NerrSnerr · 31/01/2021 21:13

I could do my 6 year old's packed lunch of choice. I can do a ham sandwich, carrot and cucumber sticks and a little bag of Maryland cookies. Our school are not strict with packed lunches- I think they're just happy everyone has food.

I'm from up north and where I'm from it was sometimes called a 'pack up'.

Changemaname1 · 31/01/2021 21:14

Been shopping today so would be fine so thinking from what was available yesterday

Ummm - crisps , yoghurt , apple , no bread umm yeh we’d Have to be at the Shop en route I think

Ihatesandwiches · 31/01/2021 21:14

I'm the worst school lunch maker ever. I
keep frozen mini scotch eggs, mini sausage rolls and cooked chicken nuggets in my freezer. If I add a tomato ketchup dip in a little dish, I get bonus points :-) DC think they have the best lunch ever and if I run out of bread I always have a plan B.

Updatemate · 31/01/2021 21:15

We are fairly well stocked, but mainly hot dinner type foods- chickpeas, tinned tomatoes, frozen peas. That sort of thing. And a fair amount of batch cooking. I'm NHS and our trust provides a hot meal per shift so I don't need to sort mine and DH tends to have soup.

I've added packed lunch style foods to the shop for the rest of the week.

Changemaname1 · 31/01/2021 21:15

Oh and to annoy people further it’s simply “pack lunch “ here due to accent

PhantomErik · 31/01/2021 21:16

Yes I've always got cream crackers in case I run out of bread. Fillings could be cheese or marmite.

Apples, bananas & satsumas in the fruit bowl but raisins in the cupboard.

Cucumber, carrots & tomatoes in the fridge. Could have a hard boiled egg.

Crisps or biscuits could be added.

LApprentiSorcier · 31/01/2021 21:16

Yes - I have chicken leftovers in the fridge. I could do a chicken sandwich, raspberry yoghurt and an apple. For a drink we've got tropical fruit juice or tomato juice but I'd have to decant it into something.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 31/01/2021 21:16
