Are waterpik's worth it?

Can someone tell me are waterpik's good? I suffer with gum disease, but just can't seem to get on with either floss or interdental sticks, so wondering if I would get on better with a waterpik!

Yes! It’s the best thing in our bathroom and makes a huge difference.

MichelleofzeResistance · 31/01/2021 12:45

Absolutely love mine. I have chronic gum issues to do with a chronic illness, and the difference it's made is huge. If I miss even a day I notice the increase in flare up.

Takes a bit of practice to use, the first time I sprayed the entire bathroom.

Sorry to hijack but can I ask are they okay with sensitive teeth? Is the water cold?

Good as they are (and I have one) they aren’t as effective as proper flossing. I don’t think they are powerful enough to remove the sticky plaque that forms on teeth. Have you tried Tepe brushes? They are easier to use than floss or toothpicks, and do remove a lot of plaque.

NanTheWiser · 31/01/2021 12:50

@happyhandstands, you use warm water, so should be fine for sensitive teeth.

happyhandstands · 31/01/2021 12:51

@NanTheWiser thank you!

MichelleofzeResistance · 31/01/2021 12:51

happy I can only tolerate mine with warm water (you fill from the tap so run it to the temp that is comfortable) and you can turn the intensity down from very gentle to blasting.

I once accidentally directed mine the wrong way and was shocked at the limescale it instantly blasted off the base of the tap on full power.

MadeForThis · 31/01/2021 12:52

They are brilliant. Definitely use warm water.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 12:52

I love mine. The stuff gets blasted out and you can see what it's getting that your toothbrush isn't.

I use dental tape, water floss, then brush.

@happyhandstands I have sensitive teeth so fill it with lukewarm water, and it's fine.

There's a knack to it, you have to sort of keep your mouth shut with just a bit to let the water out.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 12:54

I have the entry level model

Here

H1978 · 31/01/2021 12:55

They are really good for getting bits of food from between your teeth. You still need the interdental sticks for your back teeth especially if you don’t big gaps between the teeth.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 12:59

The TEPE brushes with little handles are good for back teeth.

YouAintKingDingALing · 31/01/2021 12:59

I love mine. They don't replace flossing completely though.

I have a branded Waterpik and a cheaper non branded one. They are almost identical. I would do some research - you don't have to spend £££.

TOWGA · 31/01/2021 13:01

Thanks all, I'm pregnant and as I say my gums are bad anyway (my parents never taught me how to look after my teeth and gums properly) so I'm very late to floss (I use the tepe interdental sticks) and am just finding i cant get on with it. My gums are bad for my age (29) so happy to do anything that helps.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 13:02

Tape is better than floss for me because I can pull it through rather than down. With floss I find it gets quite stuck in the narrow gaps and I can't pull it down and out IYKWIM.

chipshopElvis · 31/01/2021 13:14

I've got a cheap Argos one, its great and I'm glad I didn't sell out fancy prices. I've had it for about 3 years.

TOWGA · 31/01/2021 13:16

Thanks, I find the that my gums really hurt with tepe sticks for a few hours afterwards (I maybe don't have the right technic for it)

I hate my gums and teeth, I see hygienist every 3 months, so shows how bad my gums are.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 14:06

Do you ok use mouthwash? I just buy whatever’s on offer but no idea if it makes any difference.

TOWGA · 31/01/2021 14:10

I like the listerine advanced gum mouthwash, I do find it helps, I was using cordsoyl but didn't find it helped.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 14:12

There’s so many different ones. And some of them are ££££s.

TOWGA · 31/01/2021 14:14

@Sparklingbrook yeah I agree x

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2021 14:15

I think I might spend as long faffing with my dental routine as putting my make up on. But we only have one set of teeth and once they’re gone...

TOWGA · 31/01/2021 14:16

@Sparklingbrook I want to put more effort/time in as I say I haven't in the past, and my gums especially are awful.

I find it hard on my sensitive teeth even with warm water but I also manage to spray the whole bathroom so maybe I just haven't got the right technique.
