Is it drug money?

Hi all...just wanted your opinions really.
I know of a close relative who is always splashing out on expensive things. He's just brought his mum a house which be paid for by cash, got an extention done.He drives and expensive car. He's forever buying expensive things!
Here's where it gets a bit confusing...he used to be a PT (Personal Trainer) and with lockdown he has not worked for say over a year.So where is this money coming from!It just got me thinking because I'm always hearing how he paid for this and paid for that.He even paid for all our meals (there was 12 of us) when we went out to eat in 2019.Surely PT can not be earning so much...and if they are then looks like I'm in the wrong field.

Lottery win????

SimpleLifeAndLovingIt · 30/01/2021 12:10

@liverpool1981 We would have known about it.

Maybe not

Redglitter · 30/01/2021 18:51

Drugs seems a bit of a leap. Id think a lottery win hes chosen to keep quiet

purplecorkheart · 30/01/2021 18:53

Honestly in my family I would be thinking lottery win or an inheritance. Could be compensation from an accident. Drug dealing is not something that would spring to mind

liverpool1981 · 30/01/2021 18:56

I would just think lottery win and leave it at that

Wallywobbles · 30/01/2021 21:39

I'm pretty sure you cannot but a house in cash due to money laundering regulations. You cannot out more than 5k-10k in the bank in cash without causing enquiries. Somethings off with what you are being told.

MimiSt · 30/01/2021 21:41

My PT is a drug dealer on the side. No one would ever guess.

I once deposited 15k into the bank and no questions were asked, maybe it depends on the bank.

Redglitter · 31/01/2021 11:10

You can, I did.

Cadoo · 31/01/2021 11:26

Can't buy a house for cash!? Course you can! Are you thinking he's done it with literal £10 noteS? I don't think that's what OP meant!

I would also think lottery win.

Fuckinlonely · 31/01/2021 11:29

How many phones does he have? One and its savings/lottery win. 2 plus and its drug dealing. If he is a dealer he sounds like the most responsible and respectful one ever lol

MrsWhistledown · 31/01/2021 11:31

It depends what he's like as a person I guess.

If it was someone in my family I'd be the same as the pp where I'd think they'd won some money on the lottery. If they'd had an inheritance I probably would have heard about it.

However there is a person I went to school with who is often posting suspicious photos on instagram and I 100% leapt the fact they or their partner must be dealing rather than having won the lottery or had an inheritance just from the way they word things when they post.

Lunariagal · 02/02/2021 10:05

Hmmm I'm going to stick my neck out and say it could easily be drugs.

I know of someone who was jailed last year for drugs offences.

Everyone was very shocked / horrified / never suspected a thing. However now, many of them are realising that the signs were there, and the main signs were financial. A lifestyle that significantly outstripped their legitimate job. And they covered this by saying they'd had a big win on the bingo.

pinkyredrose · 02/02/2021 10:08

Why on earth would drugs be the first thing you think of?!

Twistered · 02/02/2021 10:11

"I'm pretty sure you cannot but a house in cash due to money laundering regulations"

You can. You just have to account for where the money came from.

Cheator · 02/02/2021 10:14

If it was drugs they would have to be high up the chain to be earning enough to buy a house cash. More involved with the import and distribution than a petty street dealer.

Very dangerous business to be in so I would be keeping my distance.

tocketytickety · 02/02/2021 10:22

I have 3 phones. I must have lost my tons of drugs somewhere cos I haven't got them.Grin

SmileyClare · 02/02/2021 10:22

Have you watched Breaking Bad? He can't be spending a load of cash and throwing it around without laundering it first. The tax office will catch up with him for starters.

It's possible as a single man (?) he's earned and saved enough as a pt to be well off. He may also be getting the income support grant for self employed so not without "earnings" for a year.

He certainly sounds kind and generous. It's a bit mean to accept his gifts/his payment of restaurant bills and then whisper about him behind his back.

Maybe subtly ask him for a gram of coke and see what he says.

Sarahandduck18 · 02/02/2021 10:24

If he has low/no housing costs/no dependents it’s easy to build up a lot in savings.

(Especially if his pt work was paid in cash and he didn’t declare it to hmrc)

user1493413286 · 02/02/2021 10:26

Funny that people assume lottery win; I’d think it was drugs too.

GeidiPrimes · 02/02/2021 10:38

Could he be involved in the sex trade/pornography? Unlikely to make any money from being a prostitute himself, but pimping pays well.

You can't just buy houses for cash with no questions though, you have to be able to show you acquired your wealth legally.

Maybe he's a secret agent? How did you find this out?

You can, i did. Had no enquiries about money in my bank account either.
