Is it drug money?

Hi all...just wanted your opinions really.
I know of a close relative who is always splashing out on expensive things. He's just brought his mum a house which be paid for by cash, got an extention done.He drives and expensive car. He's forever buying expensive things!
Here's where it gets a bit confusing...he used to be a PT (Personal Trainer) and with lockdown he has not worked for say over a year.So where is this money coming from!It just got me thinking because I'm always hearing how he paid for this and paid for that.He even paid for all our meals (there was 12 of us) when we went out to eat in 2019.Surely PT can not be earning so much...and if they are then looks like I'm in the wrong field.

I'd guess he's massively in debt.

To get to the sort of money you're talking about takes time..

And if he was at the medium to top end of the pile (15k cash) he wouldn't have a taser. He'd be hands clean. And for protection at that stage if he felt he needed it he'd have some big fellas not a taser.

Other option as a personal trainer is that he's doing personal services for wealthy women. I don't know how common that is in real life but they seem to show it on the telly!

Only if he told you.

dillusional · 03/02/2021 00:25

Drug dealer comes into my mind. He may not be the one that waits around street corners but he can be involved in the logistical side of transporting the drugs higher up in the chain?

bombaychef · 03/02/2021 00:25

He could well be a male prostitution or drug dealer. Could be body building / performance drugs etc Or just some kind of fraud

TBHF19 · 28/02/2021 14:53

If he's dealing with serious amounts of money; enough to buy a house and extensions. He would carry more than a taser Grin.

I don't even understand why you care. Get your money up not your funny up Smile

Crinkle77 · 28/02/2021 16:06

@Lunariagal

Hmmm I'm going to stick my neck out and say it could easily be drugs.

I know of someone who was jailed last year for drugs offences.

Everyone was very shocked / horrified / never suspected a thing. However now, many of them are realising that the signs were there, and the main signs were financial. A lifestyle that significantly outstripped their legitimate job. And they covered this by saying they'd had a big win on the bingo.

Yep this. There's plenty of drug dealers around who are just like regular people with jobs/legitimate businesses as cover. They're not all these shady, dodgy, scruffy characters lurking in the shadows.
Gingernaut · 28/02/2021 16:20

Personal trainers work amongst body builders who often abuse performance enhancing steroids/hormones and painkillers.

He may be dealing those.

If he's routinely carrying offensive weapons, I'd stay clear and only keep on polite nodding terms.....

im5050 · 28/02/2021 16:26

2 PTs that I know were both definitely dealing drugs it started of as steroids for those that are more into bodybuilding and then harder drugs as a more profitable sideline

The PT stuff is a nice cover for them and they pretty much have a endless supply of clients who all recommend each other so he knows he’s not being set up

He had better hope he doesn’t get caught with a taser as it’s pretty much the same as carrying a gun sentencing wise

im5050 · 28/02/2021 16:31

If he has a legitimate income from PT work then he could easily buy a house cash

I wouldn’t think he is that high up in dealing because any dealer with a bit of sense who gets that far up the chain wouldn’t carry a taser or a gun with them as both will get you prison time .

Easy access to guns and tasers yes but carrying them and keeping them in your car a definite no . Unless they were going to use them within a few hours and then get rid of them

MagdasMadHouse · 28/02/2021 16:33

Do we have bounty hunters? If so my bet is on that.

SallyAnn32 · 28/02/2021 16:35

My friend was like this. Part time administrator with a Range Rover, Botox, fillers, 6+ holidays a year. Turns out she was making an absolute mint on webcams!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 28/02/2021 16:42

@Fuckinlonely

How many phones does he have? One and its savings/lottery win. 2 plus and its drug dealing. If he is a dealer he sounds like the most responsible and respectful one ever lol
Lots of people have two phones: a personal one and a work one provided by their employer. Nothing to do with drug dealing!
Aloethere · 28/02/2021 16:43

Maybe it is OnlyFans? If he was a PT he might have the bod for it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/02/2021 16:54

Drug dealer, sounds like he is in the right circles to do so.

17CherryTreeLane · 28/02/2021 17:57

I know someone like this, in his case I highly suspect he's money laundering.

aweegc · 28/02/2021 18:10

I'd think drugs too.

And no effing way would I try to find out! 🤣

minchinfin · 28/02/2021 18:20

The only person I know who bought a house for cash recently is part of a well-known drug family that bring it in from elsewhere to where we live and he apparently works as a bookkeeper for his grandfather, who is the main guy.

I know quite a lot of PTs who charge £100+ per hour. If he's in that category he might well have a side business doing diet training plans and selling them online - basically money for nothing if you have a following of clients willing to refer you to all their equally wealthy mates. Having said that dealing would fit well into that profile too. And if he is dodgy with his bookkeeping he could earn a fair amount of his "legitimate" income without paying tax on it.

partyatthepalace · 28/02/2021 19:02

Could well be.

Are you worried about it for some reason or just curious?!

Kazzyhoward · 28/02/2021 19:11

@Redglitter

I'm pretty sure you cannot but a house in cash due to money laundering regulations

You can, I did.

Indeed you can, but the solicitor should be doing "due diligence" to prove it's a legitimate source.
Kazzyhoward · 28/02/2021 19:19

If something looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

Near where I used to live, there was a sandwich/pie shop. The owner had a brand new porsche (or similar) every year. He lived in a very expensive house. He sponsored the local football club. Trouble is, it was a crappy little back street shop that was usually quiet yet always had 2 or 3 staff behind the counter. It wasn't particularly good - bog standard sandwiches, nothing special at all. It just didn't stack up. Then one day it was closed. In the local paper, there was a report that it had been raided by police. A year or so later, the guy appeared in court and was convicted of drug dealing and money laundering offences. He'd been using it as a front. Drug users were going in to buy a "sandwich" but coming out £50 lighter with more than a sandwich in the wrapper. Apparently, the till showed thousands of pounds a day in sales - even franchises like Subway would struggle to show that level of sales! By putting drugs money through the till, he "laundered" it and made it legitimate. He was happy to pay the VAT and income tax on it as that was a price worth paying to legitimise it so he could spend it.

Emma2021 · 28/02/2021 19:32

Unless the house is work no more than 20k, you can't buy a house for cash without explaining where the cash came from, ie electronic trail.

Idiots at work though we'd win the lotto when we bought a brand new car worth over 50k. Yes, one person asked outright how much is the lease per month and when my husband told him we'd boguht it for cash he said you won the lotto.

We sold a car a few years ago and the bloke insisted paying us cash. We were dubious and thought even used notes notes to make them looked used could be fakes so we went to the bank together to deposit. The next day we got a call from the bank as we'd been with them for a few years asked us about the cash we told them we sold our car, they asked no further questions.

I recall mum and dad being paid in cash at work years ago as it was the orm and dad always had to have about 2k waiting arounf the house and when he went to see family more than a 100 miles he's take at least 1k with him in case the car broke down as my dad did not trust credit or bank cards.

If the person is splashing as put here, trust me it's only a matter of weeks before he is taken in as the police will get reports, they will do some background checks and any lotto or any other wink or money paid into his/their bank accounts will have a trail so they police will then decide if the money is legit or not.

You must trust me as if it's drugs money, soon everything will go quicker than it came.

Blyatiful · 28/02/2021 19:38

My cousin is a professional gambler. He’s bought two houses for cash, his main home in London and a holiday home in Cornwall, plus he has helped his kids out with deposits for their homes. Could it be that?

True but the tax man is like a silent assassin, once they are after you, you will regret the day you was born. Even the DWP will get in on the act and ensure any benefits paid are recovered and fines/prison etc as computers make it easy to trace history etc.

DWP are working in collaboration with the banks/etc, police and the DVLA and a beta sytem that flags upsituations especially those on benefits and I don't mean just hose that don't work but those that work on the PAYE, self employed, family credits, housing benefits etc.
