What exercise do you do, and how do you fit it into your day?

Just curious about the range of activities people enjoy, and how they fit around their typical schedule. I'm really missing my yoga studio at the moment - can't wait to get back there at first available opportunity! I'd also really like to run a 10k this year, but am pretty shit at running so don't know if that is too ambitious.

I'm job hunting right now and wondering if I'll have the energy to exercise once I'm working. Especially early on when it's new and exhausting, plus I am chronically ill.

How does being active fit into your lifestyle?

I run every morning after I drop DS in nursery. In the evening I do 30 mins of yoga/barre while watching tv

Can anybody recommend a 30-40 min HIiT workout online?

Reading this and realising why I'm overweight.

I always walk to my local job and at the moment I'm walking back the long way (about 30 mins). Doing a couple of online exercise class a week. Normally I'd be doing exercise classes at the local hall and when spring is here we'll take up local bike rides again and hill walking nearby (too muddy at the moment). My job has changed due to lockdown, but I'd normally be doing lots of lifting, so that's good exercise and I get paid for itGrin.

daisypond · 30/01/2021 08:40

I don’t do any at the moment. I work full time and can’t seem to fit it in at all. I’m actually bordering underweight, though.

PolarnOPirate · 30/01/2021 08:41

For example, yesterday I did a half hour YouTube workout while the kids were on screen time, and 40 mins on the exercise bike while DH was doing bedtime. Kids are 3 and 5, much harder when they’re younger.

With lockdown and DH being around more, we each have more flexibility to pop out for exercise.

Bluesheep8 · 30/01/2021 08:42

I walk for an hour before work. I am WFH and think of it as using what would have been my commute time (driving) to work. I then do longer walks both Saturday and Sunday. So just walking Blush

DebbieFiderer · 30/01/2021 08:48

I'm generally very unfit (and fat) but I'm working on it. I started couch to 5k on 1st Jan and am doing that 3 times a week, either before or after work depending on my shifts. This week I've been off so have added in some yoga, a 15 min you tube video which I've enjoyed so will keep doing on the days I don't run. I'm still not fit, but as I get fitter will try to keep adding more exercise, but it is tricky with my shifts.

GVmama · 30/01/2021 08:52

I’m home schooling children at the moment, so I schedule a short run (3k) on their lunch break or a longer one (5k) around 3pm when they’ve finished school. Sometimes I’ll meet a friend for a run at the weekend, or a long walk.
We have three dogs so I walk a lot with them too.
It’s easy for me to fit it it at the moment in lockdown but know I’ll find it harder afterwards.
I think the key is to schedule it in like any other committment.
Hats off to everyone getting up early to exercise though, I have never found that level of dedication to exercise!

notdaddycool · 30/01/2021 08:54

I used to cycle to work. Then when schools were open I’d run to school with kids cycling then run home. Now I seem to be running at 9pm.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 30/01/2021 08:54

I am a swimmer and I am missing it so much! I jumped on the cycling bandwagon last year. I’d love to do a triathlon so it seemed a good excuse!

Weather permitting I try to commute on my 3 days at work which is about a 30 mile round trip. I’m currently shielding/working from home so I try and get out for between 15 and 20miles 3 times a week.

I walk about 3 miles with my toddler most days too.

I’ve put on a lot of weight over lockdown so need to start shifting it now

EnjoyingTheSilence · 30/01/2021 08:56

I’ve not exercised for years but got a peloton at Christmas and have used the bike or online classes every day since. The hope is I get into the habit so it becomes part of my routine. So far it’s going well

firstimemamma · 30/01/2021 08:57

I walk everywhere.

Twice a week I run, half an hour each time.

HappyFlamingo · 30/01/2021 08:57

I'm a runner. It's actually easier to fit in at the moment because I'm wfh, so I can go at 8 and still be at my desk soon after 9 (after a quick shower). So at the moment I'm running three or four times a week whereas usually it would be once or twice.

MoiraNotRuby · 30/01/2021 08:59

I have made a massive effort in January, getting outside to run a few times a week, walking the dog each day and doing yoga with adriene most days. I fit it around mealtimes as I like to exercise on an empty stomach.

What makes it possible is that at the moment I work part time, my children aren't young and I don't have any illnesses.

ducktape · 30/01/2021 08:59

Used to cycle twice a week til first lockdown. Up to Christmas, no exercise. Set up bike on a turbo trainer and have been doing an hour cycling on zwift 6 days a week 630-730 before the kids get up. Then Joe Wicks 3 times a week with the kids during homeschool hours. Have been amazed at how much better I feel and how quickly my fitness is improving. When the kids go back to school and I am back working normal hours I will try and fit in some strength training (and maybe yoga too) instead of Joe, as I am getting to an age where I need to keep an eye on maintaining bone density.

LizziesTwin · 30/01/2021 09:01

I used to go to the gym 5-6 times a week & do yoga/barre and spinning or run.

Since last March I’ve moved away from yoga and into challenges and programmes led by Dame Kelly Holmes. I started her sessions in April/May. Her programmes are really varied, in all the weeks no session has ever been repeated, so each day you just go with the flow & do as you’re told. Her new programme, 28 Days to Killer Abs starts on Monday, www.militaryinmotion.com £65 for the month - live workouts, recipes, affirmations, closed groups for support. It’s been wonderful & I really recommend it. Some people have lost weight since starting with her (5kg for me) others have started looking after themselves better, making sure they eat well. There’s no emphasis on weight loss, just on being the fittest healthiest strongest you. There’s a running/walking challenge starting on Monday too, £25 and a whopping great medal. Free classes - shown below is last week’s timetable, I think next week is the same.

What exercise do you do, and how do you fit it into your day?

@Whoateallthechocolate

Reading this and realising why I'm overweight.
Me too!! I'm think I'm doing well if I go out first a walk a couple of times a week.
tocketytickety · 30/01/2021 09:08

Everyday mainly. Once I'm up, depending on when I wake up, I either go straight to exercise or make breakfast before I exercise.

Yoga/stretching/dance, Treadmill or Elliptical. Then shower and start the day. I expect it of myself everyday so a day I can't do it for one reason or the other, it's no big deal. I feel energised everyday for it.

hopewardrobe · 30/01/2021 09:10

I work full time, mostly out of the house (nhs therapist). I used to be super fit and toned but last 5 years following a tough time, I stopped exercising. I've now started again so I set alarm for 6 am and either run or a Les Mills 30 minute class first thing 4 times a week. Yoga before bed (10 mins) and a long walk/run and long yoga session the weekend.

It's easier for me as kids are teenagers.

Peanutbutterkitkats · 30/01/2021 09:11

I do a 30-40 min Hiit 5 mornings a week as soon as I get up, then every day do a yoga with Adrienne, following her monthly calendar. Im wfh so pretty sedentary most of the day so I try to get a lunchtime walk in to get my 10000 steps

hopewardrobe · 30/01/2021 09:11

The positive impact on my mental health, skin and physical benefits are really noticeable too. I also drink at least 3 litres of water a day. I have a tick box list in my diary so I drink a glass and tick it off

InTheseUncertainTimes · 30/01/2021 09:15

Disclaimer that I have lots of time, so never struggle to find the time for exercise! I used to hate exercise when I was younger, and only really started in my 30s, and very gradually at first. In my 40s now.

Usually I'd go to the gym three times a week, and on the other days of the week do a mix of walking, weights or yoga at home, and/or go on the cross trainer we have at home.

With this lockdown, I've settled into a kind of three day cycle of home exercise:

  1. c. 45 mins of weights + walking
  2. c. 60 mins yoga/pilates + walking
  3. 60 mins on a (shitty low resistance) cross trainer + walking

The lengths of the walks vary a lot depending on the weather and how I feel. I get the minimum of 10K steps a day, but usually a bit more.

doctorhamster · 30/01/2021 09:16

Watching with interest because I really want to start building some regular exercise into my routine. At the moment I walk to work and back (only about half a mile each way!) and go for a longer 5 mile walk at the weekend.

I work full time and have to leave the house at 7.30 every morning. Then when I get home at 4.30ish it's straight in to helping the dc with their school work, taking them to their various activities (in non COVID times) and cooking dinner etc.

I'm going to have to motivate myself to do it at 5.30am aren't I? Sad
