How do you dispose of oil from tinned fish?

My friend pours his straight in the bin (!?), but I've always poured mine in a bowl mixed with fairy liquid to break it up and then pour it down the sink. Is there a proper way?!

Dumb question I know, but it's a slow night.. Wine

I put it on my dogs biscuits for a yummy treat.
Otherwise I would do the same as you.

Zimbomama · 28/01/2021 23:06

Straight into a jar or container that can be sealed and disposed of. Can't imagine the smell in my bin pouring it in and not great for the environment to go down the sink!

Mosaic123 · 28/01/2021 23:06

I just pour it down the sink. Then I flush it down with water.

MotherWol · 28/01/2021 23:06

I put it in the food waste bin, but if I didn’t have one I’d drain it into an old can and put it in the bin rather than pour it down the sink as oil causes fatbergs in the drains.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 23:07

Don’t pour it down the sink, with or without detergent. That’s how fatbergs are formed that mess up the drains in this country.

Pour the oil into a jar with a screw top lid and when it’s full, screw the lid on tight and throw the whole thing out with the general rubbish.

Lastfreakinglegs · 28/01/2021 23:08

I feed it to the dog! Or I buy no drain versions

DinnaeFashSassenach · 28/01/2021 23:08

I keep my jars for oils and fats. They should never go down the drains.

grassisjeweled · 28/01/2021 23:08

Sink

Smallgoon · 28/01/2021 23:09

Good advice. I've often wondered this myself. I tend to not purchase fish in oil in any case.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 23:10

You can’t flush oil down with water. The two are immiscible.

LittleTiger007 · 28/01/2021 23:10

Fat-burgs are a serious problem. Buy it in spring water.

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/01/2021 23:11

I buy tuna in spring water but oil from tinned anchovies goes in a little jar in the fridge as a tiny big stirred into mayonnaise is amazing. Oil frim sardines or mackerel goes on the dog's dinner for a little treat. If I didn't have a dog I'd probably put it down thd sink and follow with hot, soapy water from the washing up.

3JsMa · 28/01/2021 23:11

I add it to the dog/cat food.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/01/2021 23:12

You're not supposed to pour oil or fat down the sink!

I don't buy oily fish in tins, but if I did I'd drain it into the bin. I'd offer it to my cats but they'd turn up their noses. Brats.

SingingSands · 28/01/2021 23:12

I don't buy fish in oil, but sometimes DH does and I pour it on the cat food Grin

nimbuscloud · 28/01/2021 23:12

Dog’s bowl

breatheslowandtrust · 28/01/2021 23:12

I put it in a jar and use it for tuna and pasta for frying the onions. It's also really nice for scrambled eggs and omelettes.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/01/2021 23:13

Yeah, fatbergs!

Overseasmom100 · 28/01/2021 23:13

I buy springwater tuna and give the cat the water...he loves it

dementedpixie · 28/01/2021 23:13

Should never put fats or oils down the sink. Bin it instead

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/01/2021 23:14

Reading this, it's a good job the dog likes fishy oil buf if ever changes his mind I'll find a way to wrap it and bin it. Wonder if it would compost OK? I don't have this dilemma regularly so I wouldn't have an overly fishy compost heap.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 23:14

The hot soapy water will make no difference. Oil and fats should never be poured down the sink.

PickAChew · 28/01/2021 23:16

The oil is probably more likely to soften the fatberg, being liquid at room temperature.

I buy fish in water, anyhow, but generally wrap oil or fat in old packaging or pour it onto absorbent waste eg stale bread, in the bin.

Beamur · 28/01/2021 23:17

I'll pour it into the food waste if the dog leaves home...

Onlymeandthedognow · 28/01/2021 23:19

My German Shepherd dog has either sardines, mackerel or tuna in sunflower or olive oil several times a week (good for skin and joints)
I’m very squeamish about fish so I run the kitchen hot tap, undo the cans drain them down the plug hole and mix the fish with Ddogs biscuit mixer... eyes closed🤮 Put the kettle on...
Then while she’s eating her food, the plug hole gets bleach and boiling water down it and the cans are tied up in a food bag (no smell)
Hands washed, job done... just avoid the fishy dog-breath for a good while.
Have fed all my GSDs tinned fish over the years, no drainage issues ever!
