How do you dispose of oil from tinned fish?

My friend pours his straight in the bin (!?), but I've always poured mine in a bowl mixed with fairy liquid to break it up and then pour it down the sink. Is there a proper way?!

Dumb question I know, but it's a slow night.. Wine

I wash them out with fairy liquid otherwise I just get worried about fishy oil going everywhere.

My husband's preferred method is the 'leave it in the sink and wait for someone else to deal with it' method. I got so sick of it that I once hid the all the tuna so that he couldn't find it and told him I wasn't liberating those tins until he fucking started disposing of them properly!

I can't believe so many people think it's acceptable to pour it down the sink.

I either store it in a jar to re-use it or pour it in the bin.

FamilyOfAliens · 29/01/2021 16:43

@TheSandman

I said that because I put all excess oil from cooking and preparing food into one the one jar, including oil from frying eggs, I would have to keep any oil I wanted to add to my food in separate jars.

How much stuff in oil do you eat? Any oil from jars of antipasto or whatever get used within a couple of days. I don't store it. Just use it.

And 'oil from frying eggs'? When I do a fry up for the family (there are 5 of us) I'll get five eggs done in one pan with about a tablespoon full of oil. There is no waste. Are you deep frying them?

Not looking for a fight; just curious.

Yes, it seems we buy different food and cook things differently.

I think I may have to sit down to recover from the shock of discovering not everyone in the world is the same.

Twinkie01 · 29/01/2021 16:45

The oil in the tins is liquid, it doesn't solidify at any temperature so how does it add to the fatbergs?

mootymoo · 29/01/2021 16:47

The only fish that I buy in oil is anchovies and I put it in whatever I'm cooking

Smallgoon · 29/01/2021 16:47

I too am curious as to how there would be oil remaining after you've fried eggs... Unless you drown your eggs in oil when frying?

hahaha!

Watch the BBC link I posted upthread- it explains how.

I always buy tuna in spring water, but if I do have any oil to dispose of, it goes into a plastic bottle and then taken to the local oil recycling point. The country I live in has these oil recycling points (a bit like bottle banks) where you drop it off and it gets recycled into base oil for production or fuel I think.

Smaller amounts of oil I mop up with kitchen roll, put in a paper bag (I save up bread bags and the ones you get for veg in the supermarket to put messy stuff in) then in the bin.

AdaFuckingShelby · 29/01/2021 17:17

I buy mackerel in olive oil and just put it all on my salad, it makes a nice dressing. The cats lick out the tin .

Oldraver · 29/01/2021 17:20

In the frozen food waste tub

HappyFlamingo · 29/01/2021 17:21

Don't pour it down the sink!!

AmyFl · 29/01/2021 17:24

I pour it on the garden.

IliveonCoffee · 29/01/2021 17:31

I've been pouring it down the sink BlushBlushBlush

I don't generally pour oil down the sink, or drain off anything else in oil, like sun-dried tomatoes...
I think draining off the water ones in the sink means I've just been doing it on auto-pilot....I'll have to be more conscious!

I don't have much tuna though and if that's an excuse

My main worry is how much coffee grounds are acceptable after emptying the cafeteria...

ginghamstarfish · 29/01/2021 17:31

We have a septic tank so have to be careful, but even so I'd never pour oil down the sink. I used to put it in a jar, but much easier to buy fish in water or brine.

murbblurb · 29/01/2021 17:32

you fry with it, obviously.

but as we have people on here who don't know that you don't put oil down drains, there's little hope.

dementedma · 29/01/2021 17:33

Give it to the cat

hedgehogger1 · 29/01/2021 17:37

I get it in spring water instead of oil

AbsentmindedWoman · 29/01/2021 18:05

I preferred tuna in brine when I used to buy it, so not adding to the fatbergs but I can't understand keeping the oil!

Really surprised people keep the oil from fish for frying, is that only to fry other types of fish, or possibly meat? Would you fry eggs or veg in that oil? Does it not smell fishy?

I mean I really don't mind the smell of tinned fish or fried fish, but it strikes me as unappetising to recycle oil that's been hanging around from an open tin.

LawnFever · 29/01/2021 18:06

@Beamur

I put it on my dogs biscuits for a yummy treat. Otherwise I would do the same as you.
Same, my dogs nose perks up the second I open a can of tuna!
TierFourTears · 29/01/2021 18:16

We reuse some oils, but anything that wont get eaten gets poured or scraped into and old jam jar, and binned once full. Means I'm not recycling that glass, but also not putting fats down the sink.

speakout · 29/01/2021 18:21

Jesus, don't pour it down the sink.
Fatbergs!!

lomojojo · 29/01/2021 18:22

I put it in the food recycling.

Yes, but a few people, myself included, now know better! I think it was just an old habit that I hadn't really thought about. I don't put cooking oil down the sink, or flush wipes. So am generally fairly careful. Luckily I haven't actually been dumping it down the sink as I've been feeding it to my dog!
VettiyaIruken · 29/01/2021 18:24

I buy the tuna in spring water, sardines in ketchup etc instead.

Newt432 · 29/01/2021 18:27

Use it on cooking........
