I'm so hot in bed

Under the duvet... too hot
On the top ... too cold
Just a throw... ok to start but wake up cold
Thinner duvet... as above.
Window shut.. too hot
Window open... too cold

A couple of times I've woken without the duvet on and the window open so cold I think
I'm about to freeze.

Along with being unable to nod off, stay asleep, and restless legs I have come to dread nighttime.

Words of wisdom or consolation please

I couldn’t wait around to grow out of this phase, a wool duvet and HRT and I’m as cool as a cucumber.

ThePricklySheep · 30/01/2021 19:48

Maybe the problem is that your house is one temperature when you go to bed and a toner in the night. So either have your heating going off earlier (or turn it down in your bedroom so your bedroom is always cooler, and be under the duvet or have your heating on a bit more through the night and go for the lighter options.

ThePricklySheep · 30/01/2021 19:49

*another temperature not a ‘toner’.

No words of wisdom. But some sympathy!!

I have been like this for months. Tried new linen, different linen, usually perfect linen...

It's driving me NUTS.

I don't think it's down to being peri menopausal.

Nothing has changed At All since before it became an issue.

sadpapercourtesan · 30/01/2021 19:52

I'm in the same boat OP

I have terrible night sweats and wake up drenched if I sleep under the duvet. Wake up freezing if I sleep on top. Current compromise is a bedspread on top of the duvet, DH sleeps under both and I sleep under just the bedspread - but I still wake up freezing, get under the duvet and then, hey presto, drenched in sweat again. Doesn't help that I seem to need to wee every fucking half hour since I turned 43 as well Sad

So no useful advice, but I'll be watching for ideas!

Sakesman · 30/01/2021 20:11

A single duvet has helped me

Benjispruce2 · 31/01/2021 09:13

Last night I wore a shirt, cotton, strappy, nightie that I normally only wear in summer or on holiday. I woke up in the night sweaty so opened the big window. I sleep next to the window too. DH was happy as he likes a cold room. This is so unlike me!

Benjispruce2 · 31/01/2021 09:13

Short not shirt.

Hazelmazel · 31/01/2021 09:19

Another wool duvet vote here, absolute game changer for night sweats. We have a thin wool duvet and I don't wear anything at night and that's enough for me. DH gets fully dressed and piles blankets on his side 😆

Throughhistory · 31/01/2021 09:22

Wool duvets made a real difference for me. Hope you find something that helps.

Frownette · 31/01/2021 09:24

Interesting title. I was expecting a Donna Summers accompaniment.

Yes I get that as well, stick a leg out, then get cold again then put it back in ad finitum.

Have temp on at nights very low so you don't have such huge variation? Weather (in England will get better within a few weeks.

Applehill · 31/01/2021 11:47

I have recently started using a wool duvet, but despite great hope, I am still waking up several times a night drenched 😩.
Also, like @sadpapercourtesan, I am also needing to wee far too frequently. Having the window open isn’t helping either.
Following this with interest - sage leaf sounds interesting. Does anyone recommend a particular brand?

Chewbecca · 31/01/2021 11:49

Going on HRT totally cured this for me.

Babymamaroon · 31/01/2021 11:50

I'd second bed socks. You can stick your leg out which will cool you down but you'll stay warm enough to sleep.

NaughtipussMaximus · 31/01/2021 12:01

@QuiltingFlower

The answer is......wear socks! Wear nice fluffy ones to bed. Slip them off when you get too warm- pop them back on when you cool off.

Simples.

Honestly I really can’t think of anything less conducive to sleep than pulling socks on and off all night.

OP, I’d try a thin duvet with a wool blanket on top.

NaughtipussMaximus · 31/01/2021 12:09

Also, yes, if you’re ‘of a certain age’, HRT might make all the difference. I’m on it and honestly feel like a superwoman now it’s started working.

What kind of mattress do you have? Some make hormone related hot flushes even worse. We've got a wool topper and duvet on a traditional mattress. That really helps.
QueenOfLabradors · 31/01/2021 12:15

It was the complete failure of my body's temperature control system at night that finally broke me and got me to ask for HRT. It is absolutely wonderful!

Applehill · 31/01/2021 12:16

@Chewbecca yes, I keep wondering about hrt and reading up on it, including the menopause boards on here. I’m early 40s though, with regular cycles, which I know doesn’t preclude using hrt, but I just feel still quite confused about it all, in that my hormone levels must be fine. Yes, I may be deluded, too
If you don’t mind me asking, are you happy to say how long it took for hrt to work for you? I imagine it being a lot of trial and error, and then side effects similar to hormonal contraception, which I’m keen to avoid. Thank you.
Op I hope you don’t mind me asking this on your thread.

Applehill · 31/01/2021 12:18

@Throughhistory. I do have a traditional mattress (though often sleep on a cotton towel), but I can definitely try the wool topper. Thank you.

Chewbecca · 31/01/2021 12:22

I already have a mirena coil which provide progesterone so I only needed the oestrogen part of HRT which I started last autumn at 47. My sleep was better in a matter of days, no dosage adjustment or side effects at all. It's felt like a bit of a miracle cure tbh.

MrTrellis · 31/01/2021 12:28

It seems I need a wool duvet. Where do you buy them from?
We need to get a new bed this year too so I must make sure we get a traditional mattress. What is a traditional mattress?

Cherrypies · 31/01/2021 12:30

I'm 56, and earlish menopause at 45, so I'm out the other side, I dont get any other symptoms other than the too hot/too cold in bed. Occasionally go very hot all of a sudden when up and about.
It's very annoying and interrupted sleep every night.

SlopesOff · 31/01/2021 12:38

Layers.
I have a 4.5 tog duvet at the moment, with a bedspread on top.
On top of that is a 1 tog duvet and a fleece throw.
I push some of them off if I get hot.

I have found this year for the first time that if I sleep in a cotton top of some kind with a dressing gown on top I can throw some of the covers off without getting cold shoulders and arms. Remove the belt from the dressing gown and there are no lumpy bits to sleep on.

Bought this at xmas and it's lovely. Seems a bit stiff to start with but it's great now.

I was having similar problems but this has definitely helped.
