Mine was Claire's Accessories lucky bags, used to feel through them all to find the best ones! £2 pound but with tenners worth of stuff in. Bargain! Bought one every Saturday, then went to Asda to buy top of the pops magazine and enter all the competitions to win CDs. I won loads 🤣 it was brilliant.
Can't imagine my DDs doing the same. They just want bloody screens.

I used to buy Smash Hits magazine and the rest went on sweets (I was keen to tell the guy in the shop EXACTLY which penny sweets I wanted to make up my 50p mixture 🤣 Good times!

marshmallowfluffy · 28/01/2021 14:03

I was telling my teen about buying SH mag for the lyrics and recording the charts onto cassette but she just looked at me like this Hmm
She's bought the Claire's Accessories lucky dip bags when she was younger (about 8 years ago?) They might still do them but not being able to feel the bags takes the excitement away

davidsSchitt · 28/01/2021 14:04

Point horror books!

davidsSchitt · 28/01/2021 14:04

And fimo if I had enough left over

Gobbeldegook · 28/01/2021 14:06

Oh I loved a mixup. Still do. When I was little my corner shop still sold half penny sweets even though we didn't have half pennies anymore. It was brilliant. Id get a 10p mixup and a freddo and some space raiders and a free blue pop for 30p!

Penny sweets Blush That's why I was a chubby child.

Gatekeeper · 28/01/2021 14:07

I used to love buying jokes and tricks from the toyshop....blackface soap, fart powder, pellets that you put in fags to make sparks or a snowstorm. Also liked to collect Wade Whimsies which were glazed pottery miniature animals

Gatekeeper · 28/01/2021 14:08

Bloody loved a mixup though and still do at 57

Gobbeldegook · 28/01/2021 14:09

@marshmallowfluffy it was 1999/2000/2001 I was buying the bags. I also recorded the charts off the radio onto a cassette tape!

Anglo bubbly, liquorice (spanish)bootlaces, spearmint Arrow bars, footballs chews sweet tobacco, white mice, pink prawns, drumstick and swizzell lollies. Yum!

Wendyhause · 28/01/2021 14:13

Pineapple chunks hard boiled sweets. Best value ever as they lasted such a long time. I think they are still available in pre-packed bags but mine were the ones which were weighed out from the big glass jars.

Jackie magazine. No other mags were ever as good.

BerryPieandCustard · 28/01/2021 14:19

Those little balls from body shop with bath oil in
Black Jacks
Smash hits magazine
Panda pops drinks
So... body sprays

My DD just wants Robux Sad

leekandpotsoup · 28/01/2021 14:21

Lucky bags - I'd keep buying them until I got the "surprise" I wanted, so we're expensive really but I'd get money for going to the shop for people. Later on as I got older I'd buy a magazine called look and learn it's started with the As and worked it's way through alphabet - A is for aardvark.

When I was in my teens I used to babysit and I'd buy broken biscuits from Woolworths and sneak them into the bedroom so me and my 2 brothers could have midnight feasts.

kennelmaid · 28/01/2021 14:22

I didn't get pocket money as such but if I ever received a bit of money as a treat I used to go to the book stall on the market near where I lived and buy a book. They were "Tales for Tinies" type of books that I used to read to my sister. Cost 2s/6d, that's about 12p in "new money" ShockGrin

I also used to buy film for my camera from the chemist on the corner (3s/11d for a 12 exposure black and white film), that's about 20p.

I was 8 years old at the time, these were the days when children were allowed to be more independent than today, I used to take myself off to the shops on my own!

davidsSchitt · 28/01/2021 14:23

"My DD just wants Robux"

Do you give her the same freedoms your parents gave you?

I was allowed on the bus, with friends into town to wander round the shops etc. aged 10.

My ds will be 10 this year and I just can't imagine it, so much less freedom. I'd let him if he wanted to but his friends don't either!

marshmallowfluffy · 28/01/2021 15:04

I live near a supermarket and I used to see kids buying energy drinks before the age limit appeared. I live in the suburbs so it's easy to round up some friends and walk to the chip shop for some cheesy chips without complications like adults having to give lifts.

If your DDs like jewellery I'm sure they will spend hours browsing in New Look or equivalent (Claire's is strictly primary school here)

How old are your DD's? I see lots of groups of y6 ish at the shopping centre in normal times but instead of SH Mag it will be Snapchatting their cold drink from Starbucks or Costa.

SconNotScone · 28/01/2021 15:43

I used to get Shout magazine, or sometimes Mizz. I moved on to Just 17 when I was about 13 or 14. I used to like getting either a penny sweet mix, or 20p of sherbet pips. Also loved going to the Body Shop to buy bath oil pearls and mini soaps, my favourite was the orange ones!

EscapeTheCastle · 28/01/2021 16:10

A pal used to pick up bubble gum cards with the A Team on them for me and I would give her the money. Her newsagent had a better selection of things than mine did.
My dad used to buy Smash Hits for me as a treat each fortnight so I didn't need to spend pocket money on that. I did used to spend my money on music though. At one point singles on vinyl cost 99p.

MrsMercedes · 28/01/2021 16:16

I loved buying scented erasers. My local corner shop in the village had loads of different types. It was fab for 8 year old me!

sadpapercourtesan · 29/01/2021 13:49

Garbage Pail kids
10p mix
fun snaps
Twinkle or Bunty

ChessieFL · 29/01/2021 13:49

I was going to say penny sweets. Dd found 5p in the street the other day and we ended up having a conversation that there’s now nothing you can get with 5p on its own (or even 20p) whereas when I was little 5p would have got you 5 sweets or 10 if you went for the two-for-a-penny gummy bears!
